GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted February 14, 2008 The bottom line is that we have no legit 2nd line scoring threat. Hudler, Flip, and Franzen aren't 2nd liners, and aren't consistent enough scorers. Hell, Sammy might be the most consistent of them all, just because he shoots a lot. We need to sure up our 2nd line, because the other top teams out there can get scoring from other lines better than the Wings can.

I agree 100% they are not legit 2nd line scorers or threats yet, I know that adds no comfort to a potential SC run. He is young and developing, even Dats was a 3rd liner in his first couple of years. The wings second line is basically a glorified 3rd line. The players on it have 2nd line potential or have attributes that help the 2nd line. To me the biggest worry is Cleary's injury. Because if he was healthy Babs could switch the lines up back to Flip Dats Cleary --> Huds Z Homer get the young guys some confidence again and get them going hopefully. However with Cleary out I think Babs hands are tied.
Marck13 3 Report post Posted February 14, 2008 I generally agree to that "shooting is good"-topic Especially certain players like flip should shoot more, but I'm not worried because I think he knows it aswell but there needs to be a nother guy infront of the net who takes the possible rebound and who is doing that if not Homer.... !? It's not that easy. Simple lame shooting from everywhere leads to many unnecessary puck losses and the chance to the opponent team to do something good with the puck.. ..and don't we outshoot them all at the moment? ..is this our "big" concern? maybe it's more the Calmness to get in the right position to take the hammer..!? Opie 308 Report post Posted February 14, 2008 If the wings had that same approach with Dats he would be long gone by now. Babs was telling him to shoot more last year and the year before. I agree he needs to shoot more, he and Huds have things to work on no doubt, but they are young and need time to develop. I thought it wasn't until Dats second season that he and Z played with Hullie. I thought the year of the cup it was Hullie spent a lot of time with Shanny and Feds, but that is 6 years ago and a lot of bingers later so my memory could be wrong!!! GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted February 14, 2008 Maybe I'm wrong, but wasn't the line of Dats/Hull/Devereaux playing together late in Dats 1st season, & throughout the playoffs?...Then again it could've been his 2nd year too. You're right. That was our 2nd line in the '02 playoffs, so Datsyuk did have a lot of responsibility even from the start.
Heaton 1 Report post Posted February 14, 2008 (edited) You're right. That was our 2nd line in the '02 playoffs, so Datsyuk did have a lot of responsibility even from the start. Datsyuk was on the 4th line with Boyd, Hull filled in there but got his extra minutes on different lines with Larionov. Datsyuk played 10 mins a night, same with Boyd. Hull played close to 18. Turkey 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2008 My memory of Pavel in '02 is being amazed by his periodic flashes of brilliance but horrified by the regularity with which he got smothered by big D-men. Thank goodness that has stopped happening. Sean Hill pasted him so many times during that series.

Technically, I guess we didn't have a 4th line, since everyone played many minutes, but I guess you remember it differently than I do.
