Update from Tuesday's practice

The Red Wings are on the ice for the first time since Sunday's Game 6 in Nashville. The only two regulars not on the ice are Pavel Datsyuk and Brad Stuart. I'll ask after practice what the reason was for their absences. Stuart has been playing with a broken finger. Datsyuk has been banged up, but nothing that should keep him out of Game 1 of the second round.

On the ice is Kirk Maltby, who missed the first round with a strained hamstring. Last week he thought that he might be ready for the second round.

Also on the ice is Jonathan Ericsson. Since calling up seven players from Grand Rapids once the Griffins' season ended, the youngsters have been practicing on their own. So Ericsson is practicing with the varsity does mean something even if it's just to keep him ready just in case. Ericsson's presence gives the Red Wings eight defensemen at this practice.

The Wings are practicing in the same lines that they used in Game 6. Aaron Downey is working in on the fourth line of Helm-Drake-McCarty. With Datsyuk missing, Mark Hartigan and Kirk Maltby are working in with the top line of Zetterberg-Holmstrom.

That's good, because people often compare the shiftiness of Maltby to that of Datsyuk.

I wonder if they are keeping a Zeta injury out of the knowledge of the general population

Where did you come up with that based on the OP's comments, or are you just speculating?

As far as we know, nothing at all has been hampering Z this postseason.

lots of people on here seem to think that as soon as a player is playing a little different, that they must be injured. give it a rest already! there has been nothing to indicate that there is anything remotely wrong with z!

Yeah I noticed that right after he blasted that one timer past Ellis!!!!

Sometimes one guy shines a little brighter than another. The problem with Z and D is that if one is firing on all cylinders or scoring a ton and the other isn't, people on here think that the one is great and the other is injured or in a slump.

If Dats keeps tearing it up, they will focus on him and he will start giving the puck to Z who will dominate.

I noticed Nashville spent a lot of time and energy d-ing up Z (at least that is how it looked to me) and let Dats have a little more space. There were a couple of times he had the puck going to the zone during a line change and there were 4 preds closing in on him (Z) then a couple of shifts later, it would be Dats with the puck and 2 defenders would keep an eye on them, he would then usually dump the puck and go get it himself.

And if you look at the season stats, you would think, well we will see what dats can do, but we know Z can score. Stop one and hope the other can't pick it up!

Too bad it back fired!!

Speculating... ergo the wondering part...

And yes when one of our top scorers just decides to get easily pushed off the puck and becomes really a non-threat out there for the final games... one has to wonder what is up. He is playing very similar to how he did last post season with an injured back. he came into the playoffs on a rather nice point streak... which has fallen by the wayside.

I am not the only one noticing that he isn't himself right now, albeit i might be the only one vocal about it on a wings board.

Yeah... and prior to his point streak he was "off" and it was "obvious" that he was injured then and he went on to have a nice point streak to end the season.

Just curious, every time Zetterberg isn't on a point streak is he going to be injured? I just need to make sure. Lidstrom only had 3 points and was only a +2 in the Nashville series, are those post-concussion symptoms creeping back?

He's fine, he's as close to 100% as any other player on the team, everyone is playing injured in some respect, Zetterberg led the team in shots in the first round but he hadn't scored since game 1 so he was obviously trying to do something different and it still wasn't working.

Thats his problem... Sammy got into his head and he is now baseing his play off of he who breaks their chests.

nope just because his point streak was missing is not the only thing i noticed. He has been weak out there with and without the puck (on and off the TV camera) on several instances...

When? He was finishing checks and hanging onto the puck behind the net, he never shied away contact and was still playing his usual minutes. Besides not putting up points Zetterberg was doing everything we should expect and without actual instances I'll just chalk it up to selective memory.

Pavel Datsyuk missed practice Tuesday because of the flu, but he'll be on the ice today, coach Mike Babcock said. Brad Stuart returned home to San Jose to be with his wife, who was due to deliver today. Kirk Maltby (pulled hamstring) practiced, but said he's not sure if he'll be ready for the opener. Babcock, however, indicated that even if Maltby is ready he might not be inserted into the lineup. So rookie Darren Helm, who's played well the last two games, might remain in the lineup.

"I like our lineup, I'm not a big change guy,'' Babcock said

ha, funny how this turns into Z injury spec. More like some people are bashing him. He has been backchecking like usual, controlling the puck, shooting A LOT , Ellis was better, thats all.

Take it easy Os, no one was attacking you.

I'm not going to say Z has had a stellar 1st round because he certainly hasn't, but he hasn't been a non-threat either. To me, it seems like he's having some trouble finishing right now. I don't think he's necessarily getting knocked off the puck to easily, I just think he's trying too hard with it. What I mean by that is he's holding on to the puck probably longer than he should rather than looking for the open man. I'm not really sure why he's doing that since in the past he usually always has an eye out for the open man, but that's something that we'll never know.

BTW, last year Z had 6 goals and 8 assists in the playoffs and finished third in scoring only behind Lids and Dats. How is that "playing similar to last season" when you use it in a negative context?

Don't insinuate that I don't notice that Z isn't playing like himself, becuase I certainly have. Whether you like to think so or not, there are fans on this board that have an objective view of all the Red Wings, including their own personal favorites. I like to think I'm one of them.

Who is bashing him? sorry that i say something negative that has been brought up by many people in the stands watching the game as well as others watching on TV...

Did somebody else come out and say "GOD THAT ZETTERBERG SUCKS ASS he should just be traded!!!" .... not me! I am just airing some concerns i have had over the last 6 games.

Me saying sammy is worthless and needs to find his way off the point on the PP... now that is bashing Sammy... not Z!

Maybe it is all just in my head and Z has been fantastic in the last 6 games... Anywho i am excited enough that Oz and Drake played like madmen in the first round

Hank doesnt look injured to me at all. But he hasnt been playing his best hockey either. To me, it looked like he was pressing a bit, trying to be the hero. Alot of one man rushes. The 2 on 1 with umm I think Sammy illustrates the point. Instead of getting rid of the puck early like we are taught in peewee he took on the defense solo by cutting back into the middle making it an easy play for the bad guys to stop.
