Doggy 130 Report post Posted June 11, 2008 Once again...Based on what?!?! There is absolutely no concrete or numerical reasoning to support this claim. Once again, if people are going to rip Sammy for his defensive ability, I again challenge you to give a reason other than, "I gotta say, the only ones you could argue that are worse than Sammy defensively are Helm and Holmstrom." Watching them play. I don't look at stats too much. It's just my opinion, man. You don't need to get mad about it. I've been thinking about it - I've wached Darren Helm for a few years now and he's always been very defensive minded and I think I'd probably put him ahead of Sammy too. Again Mac, it's based on watching him play okay? I understand if you want stats to prove it or whatever but I'm not much of a stats guy. I just have my opinion and not much more. Now you settle down there boy!

Doggy 130 Report post Posted June 11, 2008 Ahh yes the undeniable I watch him play argument. I love that one!! Well yeah, I've heard so many reasons why I'm wrong. Hard to argue with nothing.
Opie 308 Report post Posted June 11, 2008 Ohh I am sorry the +/- stats was nothing that has been brought up many times, but oh let me guess like Lang last year he either: 1. gets off the ice before the goal is scored on his turnover (that on always got me) 2. gets lucky because he teammates bail him out blah blah If you don't like Sammy just say it, but don't get into discussion about his play or comparing his play to others with nothing more than I don't like him. When you have nothing to back you case up other than you admittedly biased eyes it doesn't help your cause!

Draper was even for the playoffs while Sammy was +8. Does that mean he's better than Kris Draper defensively? Again, I'd love to hear why Sammy is supposed to be such a good defensive forward. Dabura 12,232 Report post Posted June 11, 2008 Sammy is a solid checking line guy with relatively good offensive and defensive upsides. He proved that when he was playing with Draper and Drake. Ideally, management/Babs realizes this, puts him on a shutdown line, and acquires a legitimate goal-scoring threat to take his place on the second line. I'll admit, he did impress me with Dally and Drapes. His mindset was changed with them and he was accountable. It was great but only for a few games. But I just saw him allow his opponents to make quick transitions too many times during the year. Maybe I am harsh on him but he's seriously not close to these guys: Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Drake, Maltby, Draper, Franzen and Cleary. To me, I don't see how someone could argue otherwise. And I think Filppula and Helm also show better natural defensive abilities.
CrossoverThrash 0 Report post Posted June 11, 2008 These guys suck in the draft, they dont have any picks in the first 3 rounds, wow did they screw up since the only guys they can draft are 1st rounders

I'm generally pretty hard on Sammy (and for good reason, imo). However, I've always maintained that a lot of his perceived shortcomings aren't really his fault. He's not a goal-scorer, but he's counted on to put up big numbers. Makes no sense, but is true. He has a lame shot, but he plays the point on the PP. Makes no sense, but is true. He wasn't made to play an especially rough game, but he's become increasingly willing to get in people's faces, both in the corners and after the whistle. Kind of hilarious, but is true. I'd like to see what he could do on a checking line for a full season.
