Can someone explain this to me

I read this article and it mentions that Richmond VA and Fort Myers FL.were among the top cities who watched game 6 of the finals. I find it a bit odd considering they don't have a franchise and they beat out New york, Boston, etc.

http://www.dailygazette.com/weblogs/schott...-finals-rating/

excerpt

The game delivered a 37.4/51 in Pittsburgh, and a 30.6/45 in Detroit. The other top markets were Buffalo (10.9/16), Denver (6.6/11), St. Louis (5.7/9), Richmond, Va. (5.6/9), Philadelphia and Columbus, Ohio (5.5/9 each)and Minneapolis and Fort Myers, Fla.(5.1/10 each).

I work in television, so I can shed some light on how the numbers WORK, but I can't tell you why Richmond and Ft. Myers rated so well.

The first number (for example 30.6 in Detroit) is the television rating, the percentage of people in the Nielsen representative sampling who are watching the program. This number does not change if 500,000 people who AREN'T watching turn off their TVs. There are only about 5,000 Nielsen families - but their television viewing habits are supposedly varied enough to ESTIMATE how the 113 MILLION American television viewers will project throughout the country.

The second number (45) is the "share" or percentage of people who are watching the program that are actually watching television at that time. This number obviously fluctuates throughout the night/day.

To throw out some comparisons out there.... last week, Lost was the highest rated show on network television with a 7.3 rating (and a 12 share). Those are national numbers, however.

I can't speak for Richmond, but my Grandparents are currently living very close to Ft. Myers and are originally from Detroit. So there is your answer. A lot of people in Florida are from Michigan and Ohio and are still Wings fans.

Thanks. They should really implement a more accurate system, is it that hard for each station to know how many total number of viewers are watching instead of using such as a small sample?

The obvious conclusion form this is that the NHL needs to expand into Richmond VA and Fort Myers Fl.

But then folks would complain about big brother watching them...

Being from Philly I can shed some info on their numbers as well, although there are numerous Wings fans in the area, many Flyers fans were supporting the Wings and wanted to watch Pittsburgh lose. Many friends of mine stated they would continue to watch the finals to see the Penguins "get their asses handed to them."
