Way to manipulate the cap

Hey all, so i can't sleep at all right now so I was just doing some thinking about our cap situation next year. We all know we have Hudler, Hossa, Z, and Franzen to potetoally resign and in all likilihood were not gonna be able to keep em all. Well what if they all signed leauge min. contracts, and than also got hired on as Mike Illitch's gardner or some stupid meangingless job like that and got paid over 7 million a cut? I know it'd be hard to explain to the IRS, but if there is nothing in the Cba, why wouldnt we do it? The moneys gettting paid the same, just our cap situation would be peachy.

TAKE THAT BRIAN BURKE WERE MORE CREATIVE IN THINKING UP WAYS TO MANIPULATE THE CAP!!!!

I know there is most probably some rule in place that dosent allow Hudler to sign with the team and than as Kenny's personal driver for 3.5 million a year, but could someone please outline it for me, cause as long as i dont have difinitive proof that this can't happen ima keep praying that Illitch and Holland will follow my advice and annoy the hell outta other teams.

This my friend is called "collusion" and no you cannot do this!

Collusion is the owners getting together and making secret agreements like saying "none of us will ever offer a contract higher than $5 million a year" or "nobody will hire Ted Nolan." What the OP asked about is illegal, but it's not collusion.

So Zetterberg can sign for $4mil to play hockey, and $3mil to go on TV wearing a toga and saying "Pizza, Pizza"?

(Yes, I'm kidding.)

although it would be worth three million dollars to see zetterberg in a toga saying "pizza, pizza," with his swedish accent.

I know of a loop hole, but I dare not mention it.

And I really do know of a loop hole.

I would mention it to the wings organization 1 on 1 , but I wouldn't post it for the simple fact that it could get out to other managers ala Burke.

That's a pretty loaded statement. TBH, if you know of a loophole I would think the many people Burke has working for him would as well. Team management know and understand the CBA word for word.....they have to in order take every advantage they can of it.

I guess what I'm saying is that if you actually have a loophole, I wouldn't be too worried about posting it here and sharing with us because I guarantee if you know it, every other GM in the NHL does as well.

every team would know of any loophole bc they have lawyers working for them and any loophole would be put to rest by the bettman nhl and its lawyers bc hockey can not afford added negative PR then it already has.

EDIT: So its etablished that there is in fact rules to prevent this. How about paying Hudlers dad like somebody mentioned and getting the money Via Proxy?

Lol i feel like SirDrake

The cap this year is about $57 mil. Let's assume that it goes up 6-7mil next year like it did this year. That means it will be around $63 mil next year.

Currently we have $38.2 mil on the books for next year. Add 2.5 for Flip and assume that Mac and Downey sign two way deals that won't count. That makes $63 - 38.2 - 2.5 = 22.3 left.

We have to sign Z, Hossa, Mule, Kopecky, Conklin, Sammy, and Rex (Rex is a RFA).

Let's say that we give Z and Hossa, $8 mil each and Mule $3.5 mil. That leave $2.8 for 4 guys all of which are expendable - Kopecky, Conklin, Sammy and Rex. It really comes down to who of these guys we want to keep. Sammy would get about 1.5, Rex about 1.3, Conklin about 1.0, and Kopecky about 0.75. Total 4.55.

I think that if Hossa is a good fit, he is going to be a Wing for a long time.....

TBH, I'm not so sure Z or Hossa will land $8 million a piece from Detroit. Z has been around long enough to understand Detroit's philosophy and Hossa has already taken on to the Red Wing mindset of Cups require sacrifice. Couple that with Lids still having another year left on his $7.45 million contract for the 09/10 season and I see Z and Hossa signing for similar long-term $7.25 million contracts. If Lids had just this year remaining on his contract and his status for the following year was up the air, who knows what Z or Hossa would sign for, but as long as Lids is on the team I believe the single player salary maximum will go as he goes. Since he's locked in for the next two years at $7.45 million I don't see anyone eclipsing him simply due to the fact that *he* takes paycuts to keep the Red Wings where they are.

collusion - A secret agreement between two or more parties for a fraudulent, illegal, or deceitful purpose.
