I briefly looked through the other threads and didn't see this topic. If I missed it another thread, I apologize.

With the comments Scotty made on WDFN about the Hossa/Babcock exchange (http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2008/07/bowman_on_wdfn.html) after the Finals were over, several posters on letsgopens.com questioned whether or not that's tampering. Some replied that no negotiating was taking place, therefore it wasn't. Plus, with all the comments that Brian Burke has made about the Oilers tampering, I started wondering if anyone has the exact definition of tampering??

Personally, I don't think Lowe or Babcock tampered in any way.

There is no clear definition (apart from what you'll find in a dictionary), but the essence is that you cannot negotiate with a player who is under contract with another team or do anything else that would restrict the other team in potential negotiations they are holding with the player.

The exchange between Babcock and Hossa after the handshakes was nowhere near tampering. Babcock's comments were really just letting Hossa know that he played a good series (i.e. why don't you come to Detroit, we liked what we saw).

Actually I can see how the Pens might complain. There doesn't have to be any actual negotiating for tampering to take place. But there does have to be some element of going out of your way to talk to someone, even if it's just a phone call. If Babcock had said that in the hallways after the game, then it'd be a stronger case, but the post-game handshake is practically forced interaction, so it's not going to matter.

1. It's still summer. Nothing better for Pens fans to do than continue moaning about Hossa.

2. It's.. still.. summer. Nothing better to do than investigate Bowman's words, which were not tampering, in hopes of getting Hossa back.

I haven't heard about any Pens fans complaining about tampering with respect to Hossa, I think someone here just brought up a simple question about where that line is drawn.

Give it time. Burke will complain about it, despite the fact that it has nothing to do with him. I haven't seen his face on TSN in about a week, so he's overdue.
