Holland: "I don't expect to hear from McCarty until Sept&quot

hi I'm darren mccarty why yes my career was saved by the red wings generosity and ive never had any success anywhere else but im still gonna see if I can play for another team

Well, he's essentially broke or has very little in his account due to the bankruptcy, but sure....go ahead and judge him for wanting to make a little money before he has to retire and then probably scrape by in some minor hockey role.

Was his career saved by the Red Wings generosity: Absolutely. Is he a terrible person for wanting to put a $575,000 in his bank account this year rather than $100,000: I don't think so, and I'm sure he'd like to have some money available for his family.

As for not having success anywhere....give me a break. It's not as if Mac was a journeyman and then all of a sudden flourished in the Winged Wheel. Over the course of his 14 year pro career, he's played only 99 games for another team. To top it off, Mac was in the worst shape mentally and emotionally when he signed with Calgary, which I would venture to guess played a sizable role in his play.

um right my argument is that he can get more here

If that was true, why wouldn't he just sign immediately? As Holland told him, he's checking out his options which at his age (and his current situation) I can't blame him for.

If I was Mac I would go to training camp on a tryout for the Wings and if I was cut I'd get on the next plane to Mother Russia and play in the KHL. Make a little less than a mill cuz im a english speakin canuck and drink some vodka. Or just go to the Netherlands and play in some s***hole and get stoned to the bejesus all day. No love lost ..

Drinking and Drugs are the last thing Mac is going to be doing regardless of where he goes.

I'd be surprised as hell if Mac went to play in Russia. He is currently working on getting back into his children's lives after his issues. I think that he will play in the NHL. I am with NFM that I don't blame him for wanting a little more than 100,000. He has maybe 1 or 2 years left in him, and he is essentially broke right now. He will play one or two more years in the NHL/AHL then he will probably retire and get a job as a coach on some minor level or a scout or something of that sort to keep some income and stay involved with hockey is my guess. Right now he is winding down what was a very respectable career, and trying to do what is best for himself and his family, and that includes making the most money that he can right now. Who can blame him. Hockey players are people too.

I agree that he has the best long term opportunities staying in the Redwings organization, they reward loyalty and despite him not getting endosment deals with Nike or RBK, he is a fan fav' here. enough so to provide some smaller local company good spokeman value of some kind......

It's tough because this guy was a true sports hero in this town on a few occasions. Turtle of course, Stanley Cup winning goal against Philly on a break away with moves nobody thought he had, and how about his hatrick on the Avs in game 1 of the WCF in 2002! Yzerman was so shocked he jokingly told the press that Mac getting a hatrick was surely one of the four signs of the apocalypse.

Okay, time to put on the reality glasses for hear and now. Sure he had a SCF goal this time, but he was a liability out there. If you can't see that, then I question your knowledge of hockey. He was way too slow and on this team that just doesn't fit. We do not need him. If he can really pull it off and get in shape, great for him, but I don't see it happening. Holland made the right offer. It's fair and puts the burden on him to make things work.

I honestly don't get the pity around here. How about some pity for people who really have no luck? This guy had more money than most people in the entire world will ever see. He was set for life if he was smart, but he blew it in a pathetic stream of stupidity and selfishness. Nobody owes him anything. He, obviously owes a lot of people. Hell, the Wings gave him yet another ring for almost nothing. Look for it on ebay.

Money aside (of course making more is nice), I can totally understand him wanting to find a permanent spot on an NHL roster, instead of being sent down to the AHL. Not just for pride, but just the grind of going back and forth and not knowing if you'll be playing with the big club. It makes total sense to look for a job in the NHL before settling for a two-way deal, even if is the Wings.

And for those who would rather have all spots filled with skill guys, that's a great quote from Holland that illuminates the point I and few others were trying to make in the ongoing enforcer debate.

"We won the Stanley Cup and I like our team," Holland said. "With Downey and McCarty, you have options if another team tries to play a certain style."

That ability to have options when a team "tries to play a certain style" justifies carrying guys like them in the lineup even if they play limited games, limited minutes, in an extremely limited role.

QFT....and its huge the Kenny not only recognizes it, but how to approach the situation with those types of players. You don't need them night-in and night-out, but you *do need them* on an as-needed basis. Being able to call them up whenever you please is beyond huge.

This kind of pisses me off.

Michigan welcomed him back with open arms, Given him every opportunity. Showing him the love that he deserved for all the blood sweat and tears he's poured into the Wings system. Now he's punking out trying to find a better offer?

I'm almost to the point where i dont want you back/

He is looking for a full time gig, if the job you worked at was like thanks for the help last quarter it was a great quarter for us wasn't it.

We are willing to keep you on at a part time level, some of it will be here in accounting while some of it will be working for as a receptionist (No offense to receptionist but if you are an accountant that would be a step down, just saying) and at less than half the amount you were already making.

You have three months to make up your mind, you mean to tell me you are not going to go job hunting?

Which surprises me that he would even consider playing elsewhere. If family is more important than Hockey, he should be signing that contract quicker than you can say "thankyouKenHolland"

My agitating skills are that pro, where i dont even have to say anything remotely bad and it gets under peoples skin.

Must be an aussie thing that i dont understand.

I dont know why people are mad at McCarty, the guys life was ruined and he was given a chance last year, and won the cup. He's coming back obviously, he's just looking at all the options. He'll get the same deal as Downey in September, no need to get mad at the guy.

Nope it's a Michigan thing too.... ;)

Seriously though, Would you go to work tomorrow if they cut your pay by about 80%???? Kenny and D-Mac have an understanding. Why would you judge the guy for trying to better his life. He's not turing up his nose at the city or the Red Wings. (If Kenny felt that way he wouldn't have an offer on the table for him.) He is just trying to secure his future. He made a lot of mistakes and now he is trying to fix them. He owes a few million dollars. This is a guy who sold his 97 and 98 championship rings. It's easy for people to judge someone they don't know.

It's because some people think player should fall down at the feet of Holland, take massive paycuts and remain forever beholden to the Wings organization because they are so classy.

It's a job. These guys are pro athletes. As I said before, money aside, I totally understand McCarty exploring the possibility of a full time spot on an NHL team instead of bouncing back and forth between that and the AHL.

Like, I understand that he has every right to explore the market, and all that good stuff, But honestly i think he owes detroit something. Detroit brought him back from nothing. I cant name many people that go from a nobody in January, To NHL in Febuary, To winning the stanley cup. Only reason he was blessed to be apart of any of that is because of Detroit..

If Detroit offers him a 1 year contract, Man up, take it. Do whatever is asked of you for at least the 1 year. Whether it's being a role model for the kids in GR or chilling in the Press Box in Detroit, Or dropping the mitts on the ice..

That would be all well and good if he had 10 years left to play. He needs to make money now. And what about what Detroit owes him? Not this year but what about the 10 good years he played here and all he gave us in enjoyment. By your admission you watch hockey partly because of D-mac.

I can understand that but I guess I am trying to think of what's good for D-mac. For what it's worth I think he'll end up here when it's all said and done.
