MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted September 12, 2008 (edited) Its too much for being 10 months before his contract expires. I could see 8.25 if this was June 30 and wanted to keep him but giving him what he wanted really shows that management was worried he wanted out. Hope for there sake the cap doesnt drop in the next few years. It's also been two months since a desperate team offered a 37-year old $10 million per season. What would they offer a 25-year old Eric Staal? He'd get a league max offer almost for sure. $8.25 million is an awful lot, but it's probably less than an open market deal, as scary as that is. Too much, too early. You gotta think that this will figure into Hank's negotiations. That might be part of it from the Canes perspective. If they have to pay out the nose to retain a guy, they're going to want to force as many teams as they can in similar situations to do the same by creating this precedent for a 23-year old like Staal. Getting it done early gets those numbers out there and sets another benchmark for all-star players. Edited September 12, 2008 by MacK_Attack
Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted September 14, 2008 Staal definately is going to be worth this money; only problem is that this huge contract might get to his head because it was signed far too early. Who would have thought 20 years ago that teams would be paying 4th year players $8 million per year deals?
Earthhuman 8 Report post Posted September 14, 2008 This is not such a bad deal. I've seen much worse.
