South Dakota wings fan 7 Report post Posted September 23, 2008 I heard over the weekend that Shanny might be coming back to the wings? Anyone else hear that one. I have Zero details so it may just be a nasty Rumor but...... Whose place on this roster could he possibly fill?! In a sick way, Shanny helped the team to win the cup last year by leaving when he did.
jujudrum2 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2008 I heard about this as well, though i don't believe that there is anything to it. Shanny is still a decent player, but not exactly the best fit for the Red Wings, even if there were cap space available to sign him. If the Red Wings are looking to add anything (which isn't necessarily a given), it would be a player to replace Drake's role, in the mold of a grizzled vet who is at the end of the line, and yet to win the Stanley Cup. However, any such acquisition would likely be tabled until after the existing payroll is reduced via either trade or waivers. Granted, Hossa & Conklin haven't won the Cup, but i don't see them as creating the same degree of motivation that Drake did, as neither player is seen as being at the end of their respective careers. edicius 3,269 Report post Posted September 23, 2008 Shanny was right to leave Detroit when he did. As he said, he's a part of Detroit's past, not its future. I was really hoping he'd sign for one more year with the Rangers, would give me a chance to see him a few more times at MSG.
ilmickeyli 40 Report post Posted September 23, 2008 Even if there was a spot for him, we do not have the cap space for him. Not a chance in hell.

The guy I heard this from is well connected person. Not that that means a whole lot but I just thought it was interesting. I knew that cap was pretty much maxed out already and so there would be no Dollars for Shanny. The up side is Shanny can fight and would give the Wings a "Drake" type presence that they needed last year. I also thought I could break out my 14 jersey for old times sake
donfishmaster 62 Report post Posted September 24, 2008 No $$$ available, no spot available, he doesn't fit in any more, we don't need him. So, NO! I loved him while he was here, but that's gone...

jujudrum2 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2008 (edited) Red Wave, i don't doubt the fact that this info came from a well connected source, but my better judgement tells me that a Shanahan signing would not be Holland's top priority (though he may inquire out of respect for Brendan), with regard to an late FA aquisition, after cap space has been cleared. Further, the fact of the matter is that any additional FA signing for the parent club, should be considered as being unlikely. With regard to a Drake-like role, you failed to boldface the key portion of my point, in that the criteria for this type of signing, would be a end of the line veteran "who has yet to win the Stanley Cup". I offered this suggestion due to this type of player being signed in previous cup winning seasons, to motivate the rest of team to be at their very best. It gives the team an extra sense of purpose. In any case, though out of respect for Brendan, i will stop short of saying No Chance in Hell, i just think the chance of this happening is exceedingly slim. red_wing 1 Report post Posted September 26, 2008 If the only reason you want Shanny back is for his fighting, what would we do with McCarty?
Rice 42 Report post Posted September 28, 2008 Many here don't want Shanny, but they may not mind having Chelios around? That I do not get. I don't want either here, but the difference is Chelios will likely be the #7 defenseman this season. Shanahan surely wouldn't be the 13th forward if he signed here. babycks0612 0 Report post Posted October 12, 2008 it seems like theirs so hostile people here. Why dont you guys like Chelios or Shannahan I dont get that, I think they are both good hockey players and good people, I always like them
South Dakota wings fan 7 Report post Posted October 13, 2008 it seems like theirs so hostile people here. Why dont you guys like Chelios or Shannahan I dont get that, I think they are both good hockey players and good people, I always like them I think it is just a matter of looking to the future. So in reality, Shanahan WAS a good player. He no has limited skills and would take up valuable ice time from a young player, i.e. Franzen, Hudler, who has potential. Chelios is nothing more than an insurance policy for this season. He is serviceable and they will try to make sure he can be available for the playoffs in case they need him so they don't end up with an unproven rookie (Quincey in '07) playing during the conference finals. I do like hudler a lot but at this point I would take shanahan, and I guess im not the only strange one because during the offseason people wanted hudler to be packaged in a deal.
