skacore 2 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 Are you delusional? Peters would beat Downey's ass, that is if Downey could stand up on his skates for more than one or two punches (which happened in their one fight that I remember). You don't give why-I-oughtta's and run away unless you are Maltby or Avery (and that's what you are paid to do). All he can do is fight, so he better not back away from that. You see any of Peters' scraps last season? or any of Downey's for that matter?
The Mule 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 (edited) Ville Leino has been too impressive to not get the spot, but I have faith in whatever decision Holland and Babcock choose to make. They've never steered us wrong before, so why should anyone doubt them now? Edited October 7, 2008 by The Mule
Skiing - Puck 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 If you were fine with it last year theres no reason not to be fine with it this year considering the Wings have even more tougher components. Yeah, but those components are going to more that likely be in Grand Rapids, not Detroit.

Peters is a washed up enforcer, while Downey went undefeated last year. You don't know what you're talking about on this topic.
Hank 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 So, after the preseason, who deserves the last spot? In my humble opinion, I just don't see how you can't get Leino and Downey in the lineup. I know Helm has played well too but at age 21, he can gain a heck of a lot playing in GR. I know there is only one spot, but it's a crime not to get both of these guys on the team. Push comes to shove, keep Downey. He adds an edge to the team that no one else does and he is a hell of a team mate who is great for the locker room. What do you think? After watching a lot of preseason games I don't know how Downy or McCarty make this roster. They are the least talented (by a long shot) of the 4. I know we want team toughness and I agree. But McCarty is always banged up and is a middleweight at best. And Downey will never be confused for a top enforcer. This team won a lot of games the last 3 seasons based on a talent set and system that personifies that talent. Judging by what I've seen the last 2 weeks, both Leino and Helm have NHL talent and fit into our system far better than Mac and Downey. As far as toughness, Lilja, Stuart and even Cleary will drop the gloves on occasion. And a lot of our more talented players throw their body around. It's too bad we couldn't have gotten a guy like Laraque. He can actually play the game and would look good on the 4th line. But if we had to carry an enforcer, I would like to see Leino go to the minors where he can be a top 3 forward and have Downey on the Wings. He's much tougher and more durable than Mac and he actually does scare most of the cheapshot artists out there.
Heaton 1 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 Yeah, but those components are going to more that likely be in Grand Rapids, not Detroit. To start the season. We all need to get out of this habit of thinking that who's in on October 9th is going to stay the same all season. While they may not make the team initially, Holland and Babcock didn't bring Downey and especially McCarty back to not get them into games this year. You're fooling yourself if you think they won't get at least half the season (possibly combined) in the lineup or exactly how many games Downey had last year. 96warrior 11 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 http://redwingscorner.blogspot.com/ Tuesday morning practice There's no official roster announcement yet, but here's who's on the ice right now for this morning's practice ... Leino-Datsyuk-Hossa Franzen-Zetterberg-Hudler Cleary-Filppula-Samuelsson Kopecky-Draper-Maltby Lidstrom-Rafalski Kronwall-Stuart Lebda-Lilja Meech-Ericsson Osgood Conklin Obviously that's more dollars on the ice than fits under the cap. But the exclusion of Kyle Quincey, Aaron Downey, Darren McCarty and Darren Helm are of note. Tomas Holmstrom is not on the ice. He missed some action late in the preseason with a banged up knee, but he did play in Sunday's preseason finale. I'll post more when I find out.
