Jocu 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2008 Note how deep Esposito is in the crease. And if you're going to photo compare, atleast use a photo from the same angle. Note how far out of the crease Giggy is.
digitaljohn88 4 Report post Posted November 27, 2008 Also, most people tend to compare the goalies of old (5'9" - 5'11") to modern goalies (6'0 - 6-2") without noting that key piece of information...
Jocu 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2008 (edited) Not to mention goalies camps and goalie coaches teach the art of butterflies and a blocking system, which was non-existent back in the day. (Speaking of non-existent back in the day, training camps dedicated to goaltending.) With that technique, a beefer chest protector is needed since a majority of the shots are now being stopped via torso/shoulders/stomach. digitaljohn88 4 Report post Posted November 27, 2008 (edited) Witchcraft! An unbiased pictorial comparison! ....Could it be that games are low scoring because EVERY player on the ice is 20%+ bigger, with less room to work with? Could it be the remnants of the trap still played by half the teams in the league? Or maybe it's the shot-blocking epidemic, which sometimes creates more blocked shots than shots on goal in a game? Nah, has to be the goalies. BURN THEM AT THE STAKE! Modern goalies will continue to play the exact same way regardless of what happens to gear. They are faster, stronger, and much, MUCH better trained than the goalies of the past. I still think the chest protector, pants, and thigh rise should be reduced, but it's not going to be the end-all solution that some make it out to be. Lazerbeam 13 Report post Posted November 27, 2008 Just for the record, Goalie Leg pads were no more than 10 inches wide back in the Good ole days! then they ballooned to 12+ inches wide in the 90's, after the lock-out they were reduced to 11 inches wide--thats where we are at now. While I cannot accurately comment 100% on the first blurb since I didn't watch hockey back in the old days in-depth and wasn't old enough to, how many butterfly style goalies did you see back then, even in just watching highlights or whatever? I can't think of any. Goaltending now is a little different, not as much stand-up, etc. etc. I'm all for pad reduction as well, but that isn't the sole reason to possibly improve scoring. It's not all because of pad size alone.

Actually, plenty of goalies wore 12" or bigger before the 90s. Not to mention many goalies like the switch to 11" pads, since it makes you more mobile and faster. That sure bit Bettman in the ass.
