GSBrooks13 204 Report post Posted November 30, 2008 I dont even inderstand..last season I watched every game and no matter who we were playing I had full confidence that we could beat them.. Now, this season, since we were supposed to be even better.. still the best defence in the league and we added Hossa.. and yet thus far into the season instead of being confident that the wings can find a way to win the game I end up thinking "what are they gonna do to throw this one away?".. I cant even stand it anymore.. watching us out shoot every team and be in control then the other team walks down the ice and scores.. but oh well.. I guess we still have 60 games to figure it out.. wingfan1991 221 Report post Posted November 30, 2008 I'm sorry, but when this season have we been "up 3-0 on the defending Champs." Oh wait, we ARE the defending Champs. Try actually understanding a post before you read it. And that includes all phrases in the post. So to spell it out for the thick-headed readers, if the Wings...we're up 3-0....on the defending Champs...they'd probably trap...because of the pick-me-up....a team gets....from beating....the defending Champs. Understand? Jesus.. my apologies.. misread "as the defending champs instead of on". made it sound like we trap now with lead. why you gotta confuse everyone? lol .. stick to what's happening now, not "what if". YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted November 30, 2008 seriously we need toughness, maybe not a downey toughness; although im not a against it. We need people that are checking that will create havoc. We have NO checking line, we are an unbalanced team. I don't think we were particularly tough last season. We didn't even have Stuart for the majority of the season last year, although we did have Drake. I think what we need is new faces, flat out. And at this rate, they might as well be tough players. I was wary of the Wings re-signing the entire Cup-winning roster in the off-season, because I didn't think we'd be motivated or hungry, and it looks like thats the case. We need new chemistry. b.shanafan14 733 Report post Posted November 30, 2008 Embarrassing defense so far this season, and no apparent reason for it. We returned with everyone from a dominant defense, but they are all playing like they couldn't give a damn. And the goaltending hasn't been there when the Wings need it, I think I've seen more saves from Ozzy/Conks that should have been definite goals, then saves that should be gimmes. The gimmes seem to be going in one way or another and our defense that was once stellar at making the smart play and clearing the puck from danger areas is now giving up terrible turn overs in the most damning parts of the ice. But half of it also if just terrible puck luck, bounces just haven't been going the Wings way this season, that combined with less than inspiring play is getting old at the quarter mark of the season

datsyukismyfriend 4 Report post Posted November 30, 2008 (edited) well, it's looking more and more like mclellan>hossa. man, i miss 2007-2008. the wings sure know how to ruin a saturday night. Edited November 30, 2008 by datsyukismyfriend
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted November 30, 2008 No, he was THE guy. Bring Back Downey! [[sarcasm] Yeah, so at least when we're being beat we get to see a fight![/sarcasm] I like Downey a lot, but let's be honest. He adds nothing except grit. Other than a very slight "energy" bounce once in a while he is a waste of a roster spot.

See I'm thinking as far back as 96- on, but you do remember we had Drake and Downey; who both would make you pay and made our team play more aggressive. It isn't much but it sure is better then DMac. I also agree I didn't just mean fighting, I meant checking and aggressive play. Abby would be fine, Helm does a great job when he's up, I would like to see Leino. We really should try to get rid of some of this dead weight; Lebda, Maltby, Draper, Kopecky. Sorry but none of them bring enough to justify them being up over those 2. edicius 3,269 Report post Posted November 30, 2008 (edited) Wasn't he our powerplay guy? Actually, yeah. I keep thinking he handled the defense too. But MacLean's still around, so there's no change there (and his credentials list him as "a power play specialist")...so it MUST be McCrimmon handling the defense. And therefore, the problem as far as I'm concerned. EDIT: McCrimmon was defensive coach in Atlanta, so it follows that he's coaching our defense...right into the toilet. YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted November 30, 2008 Wasn't he our powerplay guy? He was, which is ironic because its the only thing thats working for us these days. Which is why I think although he was an offensive specialist, he probably contributed a lot more. You don't hire a coach to work on the PP alone. Hes gonna have a huge impact on other parts of the game. Does anyone know where Barry Smith is? Is he coaching over in Europe? He sounds like he'd be a godsend right about now. Or maybe having Bowman back for Babs to talk to would help...
Guest E_S_A_D Report post Posted November 30, 2008 The Wings are being exposed for being an undersized overskilled finesse team. The defense is getting eaten alive by power forwards this season. Datsyuk is getting absolutely burried in large defenses.

He didn't really become valuable until late in the playoffs.

Sgt. Angry 23 Report post Posted November 30, 2008 Don't get your hopes up too much for the next game, as the Wings will be able to drag out that old "first game back after a road trip" excuse. While i can't say that the Wings were dogging it tonight, it was one of those games where the opposition seemed to always have 8 men on the ice - one player doggin each Wing player, plus three more in front of their net. That usually happens when you're getting outworked.

He didn't really become valuable until late in the playoffs. I remember early in the season him fighting a lot, he then had very little points but I do remember him still hitting. Now that I think about it he wasn't as aggressive as we hoped. But we still don't have anything to equal those few.
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted November 30, 2008 DMac/Kopecky add what though? I've been calling Kopecky useless since we got him. DMac provides what Downey does, but can occasionally score (I know Downey scored for GR, but that's a whole different thing) and knows how to play hockey at least. I agree, though, I'd love to see Abdelkader, Leino, or Helm in over any of them. I disagree with Maltby though, he's been doing well for us this season. Draper has been a bit of a disappointment. Slash Kopecky and DMAC, bring up Abdelkader and Leino/Helm. Slash Lebda and bring up Ericcson.
Guest E_S_A_D Report post Posted November 30, 2008 I agree 100% with the person who said Downey and Drake are missed. Drake's enjoying golf around the World and beautiful Traverse City; however, Downey is waiting a call up anyday. HE will absolutely give you 110% percent energy every shift.
