Rangers fire Renney

This makes all 4 teams who have opened the season in Europe have fired their coaches this season. I'm a little uncomfortable now with the fact that we're opening in Europe next season.

NHL Live announces Renney firing!

Filed in: NHL Teams, New York Rangers | KK Hockey

It's about time he was lousy coach and the Rangers are in a destitute state. Lundqvist 40 shot nights turns out on the losing side more often than not says it all. House cleaning coming, I want Colton Orr in a Wings Uniform.

When was the last time we saw this many coaches being fired in a season?

Maybe it's been happening a lot more as of lately and I haven't been paying attention... Does anyone have an idea?

The coach is always the fall guy. What the owners should be doing is firing all of these worthless gm's. Example: NYR, Minnesota, Vancouver, TB, ATL, and Stl.

Firing a coach is also the easiest way to quickly change something big involving the team. It's like pulling your goalie in a game and replacing him with a back-up. The new coach won't necessarily be better than the one who was fired, but the change should wake players up.

You could always fire the team captain, or the goalie, but changing a coach is easier.

I agree that it seems that team owners are more impatient now. A playoff team fires their coach...

The Rangers have to be one of the poorest run organizations since the Lockout. It seems like every single off season they are one of the teams making a "big" splash, signing "big" name free agents to lucrative contracts, and it seems like every year they underachieve. I realize that they tend to be perennial playoff contenders, but they are never really considered legitimate Cup contenders (save for a few panel "experts" on TSN who almost unanimously picked them as their pre-season favourites for last season I believe).

I feel like their lack of success has to do with the absence of any real system. Successful teams like the Wings and Devils tend to be more choosy when acquiring players, only taking those who they feel would fit into the Red Wing style of play. s*** teams like the Rangers have a tendency of just looking at names, "Oh! Drury/Gomez/Naslund/Redden! Those guys are pretty good! Here, take more money then you deserve."

Yep, the rags sure love the sloppy seconds. From Gretzky to Jagr to Shanny to Messier. Just ask Avery about it, he knows all about 'em!

That's very true. All those players were much better in their former teams too.

Before the lockout Rangers gave players like Bure, Jagr, Lindros and Holik huge contracts. Not much ever came out of it. Toronto did that too with same results.

Red Wings got Hasek, Hull and Robitaille with big money and they won the cup. Something was different there.

After the lockout there still are many teams that just can't seem to adjust to being more careful with the contracts and putting their money to something like player development.

At least the Leafs got to the final four a couple times and always got through a round or two in the playoffs. And I'll disagree with saying that they handed out huge contracts.

Save for CuJo and Mogilny, what other big name free agent did the Leafs sign during the Pat Quinn era?

2003-2004.

Vinny,St louis, Richards, Prospal, Boyle, Sarich, STillman, Sydor, Khabulin, Modin, Andrychuck, kubina.

John Tortorella.

Now out of that list you're going to tell me Tortorella was the reason they won it all?

i was merely responding to the statement that he was the "worst coach ever". no where did i state that he was the sole reason that they won the cup. he obviously had a hand in that, seeing as he was the head coach.

Renney's out of a job, but Glen Sather's still around.

No justice in NY.

My thoughts exactly when I saw this. How is Sather still an NHL GM? Is there a player on that squad who wasn't overpaid and has since underplayed? Gomez, Drury, Redden, Naslund. Seriously, the guy went on a shopping spree and then got his bill and finds out he has half his salary wrapped up in subpar underachievers with a decent term on each. Look at Gomez and Drury's numbers the last couple seasons since getting to NYR, and they are getting paid $7mil+ each. Can't blame the coach for not having a single 20 goal scorer and few if any plus players.
