NHL Gamecenter: Good or Bad?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

After a recent move I can't get satellite anymore, so no more Center Ice (Cable here doesnt offer Center Ice either, how lame). I see GameCenter being advertised, and have read that they made it better this year and subscriptions have gone up. Does anyone here have that? Is it good or bad about blackouts? Do VS and NBC games get blacked out cuz I can live with that.

im pretty sure vs and nbc games will be blacked out. i think its the kind of program that will work for 8 out of 10 people, but those 2 people will preach about how much they hate it. whenever the free weekends come up, i check it out. id say about 50% of the time it worked. sometimes i just got a blank screen, sometimes the stat boxes were terribly wrong or off. sometimes it worked perfectly. i bet there is people it never works for, and some that it always does. what you translate to is up to you, but ill this, when it works it works great, and when it doesnt it fails terribly.

I have it and love it...sort of a compromise with the girlfriend, since I'd be using the nice TV all the time if we had Center Ice. So I give up the nice TV, she doesn't give me crap about having my face buried in a laptop all evening watching hockey.

My only complaint is that I can never get the full screen option to work, but that's probably more my connection than anything else. Even if you don't have fullscreen though, it's still cool to have the stats right in front of you while the game's going on.

Blackouts: Anything on Versus or NBC. HNIC is also blacked out since they're available on NHL Network. Not sure about the TSN games they carry on NHL Network Wednesday night, but I have seen TSN games on there other nights. Also, they black out games in your local area. I'm in Cleveland and get Blue Jackets games on FSN (when there's no Cavs game anyway), so the BJs are blacked out for me.

I tried it, but I canceled it.

Firstly, their streams were way too inconsistent and flaky. That wasn't even the largest problem. The largest problem, secondly, was the high amount of blackouts they had meaning a lot of games were missed (some days up to half the games weren't even available!). I only had it for 2 months earlier this season because I bought NHL 2K9 for PS3 and it came with a free trial. Even with the free trial it pissed me off and I just watched live streams for free via atdhe until I bought Center Ice for DTV at $99. They even f***ed up the free trial thing and still tried to charge my credit card $149 until I had them reverse it.

Maybe a few seasons from now they'll do a better job but for now it certainly ain't worth it to me. It's like buying a Windows OS the day it hits retail. Too many flaws.

Edit: I also tried to use full screen high res streams over to my HDTV at 1080p (via VGA port) and their streams are still too inconsistent.

my points exactly, i too think it is too early in development for it to be 100% satisfaction. very unfortunate you cant get center ice.

I have it and have not had much problem with it except for when the VS and NBC telecasts are blacked out, but overall I have had good success with it and add the fact that I can watch it on a huge projection screen here in my extra comp lab that never has anybody in it makes the viewing pleasure even better

I got a free trial from my NHL 2k9 game, and I would give it about 6/10. It was great to have the games available, but alot of the games i wanted to watch ended up being blackouts. The majority of Wings games were still there, but any game that would be on "local" TV was usually blacked out, even if it was on RDS (Habs) or some sportsnet games.

My trial's over now, and I've joined the atdhe.net bandwagon.
