sureWhyNot 19 Report post Posted March 16, 2009 I don't know if this was already discussed on the boards, but I hadn't seen it so I figured I would toss it up and if it was old news people would just ignore it. Anyways, here is an excerpt from Mike Babcock's interview with FAN590's Nick Kypreos and Darren Millard. It's some of that old school Babcock everyone loves -- definitely an interesting read. Again, I am sure a lot of you have already seen it via George Malik's "Snapshots", so if that's the case -- my bad. FAN590 & George Malik Mike Babcock: I'm with you guys, let's not overreact, let's just wait and see what comes of all this, but my concern about the instigator is, what's an instigator? If you run Nick Lidstrom, in my opinion, you instigate. And you guys think, sometimes I hear you say, "It's just a good hit, so what?" Darren Millard: That was me, by the way. Babcock: I don't buy any of that crap. You know what? In the old days, if someone ran the wrong player, it didn't matter if it was a good hit or not, you fought anyway. Nick Kypreos: And, in all honesty, let's be honest. They're trying to get Nick out of the game, they're just not trying to hit them, trying to hit the better players, they're trying to knock them out of the game. Babcock: Well, that's their job, that's what their paid to do, but...In our situation in Detroit, we're just not built that way. When the general manager hires you, what he does is, he gives you a group of players, and you coach them. Now, we could blow up our group in Detroit, like everybody wanted us to do when we lost to Edmonton in the first round, but we wouldn't have gone to the final four, we wouldn't have won the Stanley Cup, and we wouldn't be on our way to maybe, getting 50 wins four years in a row. So the bottom line is, when you've got a group of players, you coach them to win in whichever way you can. Now, did I enjoy the scraps? Yes. Did I grow up playing in the Western Hockey League and have to survive? Absolutely. Did I like it? 100%. In saying all that, my job is to coach the team I have. Do I think that you should look after one another? 100%. Do I think you should command your share of the ice? 100%. sureWhyNot 19 Report post Posted March 16, 2009 These umpteen Downey threads are making Mr. Bigglesworth angry. Not really a Downey thread at all. The interview was pretty much dealing with the GM meetings and the possile rule changes/implmentations next year. More or less, the interview dealt with the topic pretty much consuming every major hockey outlet right now.

Esquire 324 Report post Posted March 16, 2009 The Fan 590 is pretty much what keeps me sane when I'm stuck in traffic on the 401. I thought his interview was great and it's always a treat hearing about the Wings on a Toronto radio station. That was a good day on the show too because after Babcock was done they interviewed Dan Bylsma which was an interesting interview also. Oh, and that "girlfriend" line that Babcock dropped nearly ran me off the road in a fit of laughter. God bless that man.

They do pretty good interviews. They have Babs on usually once every two weeks or so. I've heard Draper on there quite a bit too. I do miss Chuck Swirsky though! Wombat 26 Report post Posted March 16, 2009 I really like Babcock and I think a lot of Detroit fans would love him to coach the team "his way" ie: more physical and aggressive. It made me a bit nervous though that his tone on the last answer was sort of, "They give me players that make me coach in a way I don't want to" or otherwise implying that he's not happy with the team/style. I do hope they bring in more muckers next year and keep Babcock as long as possible.
