Was roaming around the NHL section of ESPN.com, on the side in Headlines column reads

Rumors: Hossa's future in Hockeytown

http://insider.espn.go.com/nhl/features/ru...atures%2frumors

Link leads to dated entries, with the title "Holland pursues talks with key free agents" on todays date (March 19). Unfortunately, they require ESPN Insider membership to view the article, like the nazis they are.

Can anyone give us an insight?

By next week, general manager Ken Holland should have a clearer picture of what it will take to keep Marian Hossa with the Red Wings.

Holland plans to meet with Hossa's agent, Ritch Winter, during next week's trip to western Canada. Holland is talking to the camps for Hossa and Johan Franzen, the Wings' two biggest free agents headed into summer.

"Given the uncertainty of the economy, I'm moving slow," Holland said Wednesday. "But it's not only the economy. It's about team building, it's about our philosophy. We can keep Franzen and Hossa, but then we'll have to let a whole lot of other players go. I don't know if that's the answer to being competitive. But if I can get a number that I think allows us to have one extra player, you start to think more and more about doing something. Right now, I'm not really close to where I'd like to get to with either side."

The Wings already have about $48 million committed toward next season. The salary cap, $56.7 million this season, is expected to stay in the same ballpark. But that's a gray area because if the Wings operate on the belief it'll rise to $58 million, only to find out the cap will be static, becoming compliant could prove cumbersome.

Holland has been talking to Hossa's camp since January and to Franzen's for a bit longer, but he won't extend negotiations for either past the start of the playoffs.

"I'd like to have one of them signed by mid-April, but I'm not worried if I don't," Holland said. "I'd rather have no deal than a bad deal. It's all about what direction do we want to go. I'd love to keep this team together. I like the mix of veterans and kids, but we're in a cap world, and we've made some decisions that affect future decisions."

Hossa is making $7.4 million this season, and Franzen is just under $1 million. The Wings have around $9 million in current-cap space left, and though they'll likely move players this summer to create a bit more room, they're not looking to trade any core players.

You are correct, sir. I got it free with an ESPN the Magazine subscription. Otherwise, I never would have got it.

Per mlive: Contract talks slow

Holland has met several times lately with the agent for Johan Franzen and plans to meet again next week with Marian Hossa's agent. But he is not close to finalizing deals.

"I'm prepared to move slowly," Holland said. "They're important players, but I'm only prepared to do something if it makes good business sense."

He said if no deal is in place with either player in early April, he will readdress the situation after the playoffs.

"We can keep both, but (if they do), we're going to lose a lot of players," Holland said. "I'm moving slowly because they're big decisions for us and for the players. If there's a fit, beautiful. If not, sometimes you got to head in different directions."

If you look online, you can find ESPN The Magazine Subscriptions for one year for $3.50 or so. I got a 5 year sub for $10 on a deal that I found. That includes your ESPN Insider subscription as well.

No, he's just doing what he normally does, which is no contract discussion in the playoffs.

I think Hossa's signing is in the bag. He was threatening to finish top-three in goalscoring leaguewide... before missing all those games with a "stiff neck". something tells me he (and his agent) aren't terribly worried about his personal stats.

Really?

This part of the new CBA?

Nope. Just what Holland has been quoted as saying since he doesn't know what the cap will be for next year. If it goes down too much, he could be in a world of hurt if he signs both under the assumption that it won't go down too much, which is what they're projecting. Just playing it safe.

no, it's part of the cba i think. I don't know the exact details, but it is called a "Tagging rule", somehting to do with the amount of money tied up for the following season...Holland has talked about it a few times.

I have heard of the tagging rule, but never really understood its applications. Thanks for bringing this up. Anyone out there who would be willing to explain it for me? I learn so much here. I appreciate it a lot.
