dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted March 23, 2009 Let's just assume they will be professional and play their hearts out, no matter what the situation! I wouldn't expect players to stop trying just because they knew they'd be changing clubs next season, obviously they still want to do good and win the SC. However a hockey players mental state is a fragile thing, and most players do better on the ice if they are happy off the ice. To rebut on this, Hudler should want to play even harder to prove himself. Obviously, the better he plays, the better it will help his next (soon to be) contract. I'm sure there are plenty of great teams out there that would love Hudler as their top 6. And actually, Hudler deserves it. We just have too much talent for Hudler to get his rightful chance here... Personally, I think he should be happy that will be going to team that will utilize his talent to its full potential. But different players might respond differently under those kinds of circumstances. We've seen Hank struggle a bit this season before signing his contract, and he talked about how the contract talks had been on his mind constantly and how glad he was to get it over with. One player might be at his best in the situation Hudler is in, others might lose their focus because they're worrying about what's going to happen and where they will play next season. I do agree that Hudler deserves a real shot, he could become a star-player on many other teams. Despite having had a good season and putting up points on the 3rd line, I can't help but feel like his talent is mostly wasted on this team.
LeftWinger 5,153 Report post Posted March 23, 2009 No real news here. Expect Hudler, Samuelsson, and Filppula to be playing elsewhere next season. Its a shame, but you can't just let talent of Hossa's caliber go. Hopefully our depth in the minors is all its cracked up to be, hard to replace the points lost tho. Tough decisions ahead. we've talked about this before. You are going to get a draft pick or two (or more if we win another Cup) for Filppula. Hopefully Hudler gets a qualifying offer of $2.75M or more (1st and a 3rd compensation, $4M gets a 1st,2nd,3rd) Probably wnt get it, but in a dream he gets $4 to $5M we'll get 2 1st rounders a 2nd and a 3rd. Sammy gets us nothing. That is a lot of draft picks for 2 guys. It is well worth the loss of points to bring up Helm and Abdelkader and Leino. This allows you to have a compertitve team for under the cap for a long time. The players that are drafted with those draft picks wont be NHL ready for a LONG time. That'll give our youngins now a permanent spot on the roster all while making very little. (until they become UFA's) so here's a possible scenario: Hudler (if he gets a $4m to $5M offer) for two 1st rounders, a 2nd and 3rd plus Helm Filpulla for a 2nd and 3rd plus Abdelkader Sammy for Leino Chelios for Ericsson PLUS you get to keep Hossa & Franzen! well worth the loss of Flip and Huds! LeftWinger 5,153 Report post Posted March 23, 2009 To be honest...and don't get me wrong, I LOVE hossa playing here but, Look at what we'd lose to keep him. With just his salary (possible contract) alone we could keep franzen and Hudler, or right about there anyways. We'd be able to resign leino and still keep sammy who, takes a lot of crap from us fans but in his defense he happens to be in the right place at the right time more often than not and I see only him on a consistent basis willing to stick up for ozzy. I for one am sick and tired of having our goalies run at only for our guys to just cut back away from the net and shy away from it. Sammy on the otherhand always skates right into the scrum no matter who is in there and will get his shoves and jabs in. Personally, Franzen/huds/leino/sammy - greater than hossa. Hossa is great, don't get me wrong but I think having depth on a few lines is better than having that star on one line. ALSO if you look at it...I see franzen with 30 goals, huds with 21? , leino with like 5 and i'm not sure about sammy but to me that number outweighs hossa's 36 goals no matter how you look at it. Hossa AND Franzen will be here! Franzen will take a huge discount to stay and that will allow us to resign Leino as well. You are keeping Hossa & Franzen and trading (for all intents and purposes) Flip, Sammy & Huds for MANY draft picks and Helm, Abdelkder & Leino. Franzen will stay, why give up the chance to open the season on Team Sweden (Wings) IN Sweden? Unless he signed with the Blues he could still open the season in Sweden, but why would he want to NOT be part of the Wings for that? Hossa & Franzen stay, bye bye Hudler & Flip and Sammy! Nothing personal, just business!
daniel1 32 Report post Posted March 23, 2009 I'm not so sure about that: Lidstrom - at $7.45 million a year, it's tough to argue that he's below market value when the only dman in the league that makes more is Chara, who makes $7.5 million. It probably is below market, but not much, especially when you are effectively making the most for a defenseman. Rafalski - when they signed him at $6 million, I was thinking that was a lot of money, he's probably worth it, but I'm not sure I'd say it's below market Datsyuk - when he signed his contract, he wasn't worth the money they signed him to. He's showing that he's worth more than his cap hit now, but that wasn't the case at the time he signed Zetterberg - his cap hit for his new contract may look low (maybe not so much when the cap goes down), but this is only due to the structure of the deal, the Wings are certainly taking a bit of a risk on him and I don't think there is really much of a discount, if any here. I think for the PA or league to get concerned, you'd have to see some hefty discounts taken. I'm not sure you'll see Hossa take a discount to the point people will start questionning. Well... Lids won the Norris, then took a pay CUT the following year. Find me another example of that please. Datsyuk at 6.7 is well below what he could get on the open market now. Crybaby, Malkin (next year) and Ovi all make more than he does and none of them play defense nearly half as good as Dats. Raffi - I agree with you on that one, if anything I think he should be a 4-5mi/yr guy, not 6, but whatever. Zetterberg's contract is well below what he would have commanded had he chose free agency. Whether or not he would have been able to get that length of term is debatable, but then that's the trade-off isn't it? If Z had been open to a bidding war I'm sure Edmonton or someone would have ponied up at least 8mil, but for how long I really don't know. My guess would have been around 5 to 6 years max. The Wings get at least a 2-3mil/yr cut on the salary cap but they also give him the "lifetime" contract. We'll see in about 10 years whether or not it was the right thing to do. You could add a few more to the list of players who have taken less recently to remain with the team. I'm sure that Sammy, Lilja and Stuart could have received more on the open market than what they signed for. Sammy, for all that we rag on him, puts up very good numbers for his meager salary by NHL standards.
Lidstromrules16 7 Report post Posted March 23, 2009 (edited) How Holland should do it: Sign Hossa, Huds, and keep Filp Let Franzen, Sammy, and Cheli go. I love Franzen and all, but IMO he is not worth losing Huds and Flip. Plus, it would give Detroit a little more wiggle room, depending on the salary Huds would command. Nothing personal, just business! You have some good points dude (or lady, not sure sorry) , I completely forgot about the picks we'd get for hudler being a RFA and Helm (a cousin through marriage) , abdelkader (played a few games with AND against the guy and let me tell you, Jabby is a beast. I'm 6'4 225 and he just manhandled me all over the ice) and leino are very capable replacements especially given that they all have VERY minimal experience. What happens when they get the games under their belts? Their play can only go upward right? So looking at it with your logic, it really doesn't sound as bad as I thought in the first place. Thanks for the positive insight...it made my day : ) and no thats not sarcasm lol
#18 the _Hoss_ 2 Report post Posted March 24, 2009 (edited) http://sports.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/...ortsHockey/home New article ! ....The Red Wings are in Edmonton tonight after playing in Calgary last night. Hossa's agent, Ritch Winter, is based in Edmonton, so presumably the two sides will communicate at some point during the visit. Even if nothing is resolved before the end of the season, the door will remain open, for the simple reason that the fit between Hossa and the Red Wings has been so seamless..... ....McCrimmon described Hossa as "an every-dayer. He comes to play every day — practice, game day, summertime he trains, so he comes to training camp prepared. He's a great teammate. From goal line to goal line, I'd have a hard time naming you five better players. He plays both sides of the puck..... ..."It's been a blast for me to play here. I know I get to play with great players. They give you the puck and it's a big difference when you've got the puck on your stick [as opposed to] playing without it."....
