Cicada 4 Report post Posted April 25, 2009 the thing with the joe is that it's prime water front property, yet makes no use of it at all
Jwo 7 Report post Posted April 25, 2009 (edited) And with the Joe gone the city could expand Cobo into that area if they wanted too and do something more with the riverfront in that area.... LMAO that idea is beyond outerspace, have you been paying any attention to the news lately? On how the city is not even wanting to fix the Cobo: roof leaks, broken loading zones, crumbing parking structure, doors, AC/heating unit. Cobo is a dump and needs to be torn down. A mini amusement park would better suit the riverfront. Something like Navy Pier, Coney Island or that one out west in Cali. chrisdetroit 189 Report post Posted April 25, 2009 Illitch loves the Wings, he does want a new building to put his crown in, seeing what he has done for this team and for the Tigers I would think everyone would trust he is smart enough and has enough passion about the organization to do it at the "RIGHT" time. It's not really a question of "WILL" it happen it's a question of "WHEN". He's not stupid, I'm sure he is working on something and the timing will be "right" for the situation. I'm also certain we will all be around to see it. What a day that will be because I'm sure it will be first class. The Wings have a sweetheart deal on the Joe for as long as they want. The city of Detroit has to provide all of the security for events. This is unheard of for any sports venue in the U.S. and I read that it is worth big money. Here's the catch though, if the Wings leave for a new arena, they will not get such a deal again. Mike Illitch is a very shrewd business man so I don't see him leaving the Joe. Jwo 7 Report post Posted April 25, 2009 Didn't Illitch purchase land and get a building permit, or am I just making this up? He and his wife have been buying land behind the Fox Theatre. Don't know about building permits. Illitch company "Olympia Development LLC" just tore down Chin Tiki.

Either way, a major city needs a modern convention center and Cobo isn't one... Tearing the thing down leaves Detroit without the NAIAS which is the primary use for Cobo each year so that's not going to happen... And you really can't count what the city officials are saying since the majority of them are a complete joke anyways.... Cobo needs to be modernized and expanded in a smart way so it will remain a viable convention center for years to come..... If the city and suburbs could actually work together for a change a renovation/expansion could happen soon since the region needs the NAIAS.... Mike 0 Report post Posted April 26, 2009 I think they should just not bother with the renovations and renew the lease for only 5 years while everything with the new rink gets finalized. I just hope they dont tear it down it would be a shame. It would be a shame to leave it up. Tiger Stadium sat vacant for years and fell apart. Detroit is the only city that seems to have trouble tearing down old stadiums/arenas. The Joe is full of history, but it is old and time for a new arena. Build a new one and tear down the Joe. wingslionstigers 12 Report post Posted April 26, 2009 I like the Joe i would be happy to settle for a renovation. If they did build a new arena i would hope that they would go with a more classic theme. Them newer arenas just dont have any feel to them. Like someone else mentioned it feels like your in a mall or an airport or something. You cant beat the atmosphere in the Joe!
Z and D for the C 712 Report post Posted April 26, 2009 I would definitely come to tears if they tore down the joe.
