I think we all agree Holland is spending too much on D. Ericcson could easily replace Stuart. Hesitant to move Kronwall since he was in 10 top D scoring. It all depends what Nick wants to do. If he does retire, Rafa becomes 10x more valuable, but if Lidstrom comes back cheap could get rid of Rafalski if he waives his NTC. Getting rid of Stuart only frees up a total of 7 million, so probably no Hossa. Flipulla is too valueble to let go, same with Hudler. Rafalski would free up 6 million right their, yes Hossa, Hudler and Leino. We got the D, and could stand to lose any one. Replacing lilja with Erricson isn't a solution, you need to replace a top 4 guy with Ericcson to gain anything.

I might be mistaken, but I think that even if Lidstrom retired, his cap hit would count against the Wings because he was over 35 when he signed that contract.

That being said, I think people are reading too much into NTCs. They are essentially an enticement-- a clause that says a player can choose where he plays. If the Wings approached Stuart and asked if he'd accept a trade to, oh, LA, who is to say he wouldn't take it? His contract is still guaranteed.
