hoogs 8 Report post Posted May 4, 2009 I was surprised that he sat in the OTs, I mean our other Dmen must have been GASSED. Cmon Babcock you gotta have a little faith in Cheli, give our other boys a rest!
Wombat 26 Report post Posted May 4, 2009 For most of the season, to me Chelios has not looked like a legit NHL player anymore. He had a short stretch of playing pretty well, but he has not been good the past few times he's played. Maybe it's because he doesn't play enough, but he's slow, weak with the puck, and takes bad penalties. I have no problem with Babcock benching him, especially since Stuart and Lidstrom were playing really well.
CrossCheck24 2 Report post Posted May 4, 2009 Last year in the playoffs before he got benched, Cheli had two bad changes in the second period against Nashville which led to 2 break away goals for the preds. Yesterday miller's(?) first break away was because of yet another bad change by cheli. That is downright inexcusable from a 20+ year vet. It was just a matter of waiting another few seconds to make sure the puck gets dumped before skating to the bench. Fundamentals. The penalty he took was a bad luck penalty. I don't think babs benched him for the penalty. Plus every time lebda and cheli are on the ice in the defensive end, I get scared. I can't imagine what Babs and co. are feeling at that point. Great point about the bad change... things like that can easily determine who wins and loses playoff games.
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted May 4, 2009 It confuses me a bit as to dressing somebody in this situation but only playing them maybe 6-7 minutes a game. If that's the case, why not go with the younger legs in Derek Meech as the 6th d-man. I'm never going to be the coach though and Babcock has his reasons for doing things, so I dunno. Did you watch Meech play this season? Chelios on the bench is more useful than Meech is on the ice.
