wingfan1991 221 Report post Posted June 9, 2009 http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2009/06/ke...s_upon_the.html June 7, USA Today: This isn't new. The Red Wings have been playing the beginning of the song for a while because it contains the lyrics "born and raised in South Detroit," which fans enjoy singing. But I sense this season, that song has more meaning than just faith in a great hockey team. Life in Michigan these days is a morass of economic hardship. The score that matters is that umemployment in the state is 12.7% and I believe the rate is much higher in the city of Detroit. The auto industry is on life support, and everyone knows someone who has lost his or her job or house or both. Detroit coach Mike Babcock even addressed it in a news conference during the series, saying he knew people in his circle of friends who were experiencing hard times. That's why I think the singing of Don't Stop Believin' seems louder and more passionate this season. The Red Wings turn off the music after several bars and the fans sing acapella "born and raised in south Detroit" and it keeps going on and on and on. Perhaps to some, this is merely about having a good time at a hockey game. But I think to many, this song has become the symbol of pride and unity, sticking together during an economic downturn that seems like a depression to many in Michigan. Don't stop believing is both the title and the message. The symbolism in this song just happened, born out of the distress of economic hardship, and I think it's going to become one of Detroit's most beloved traditions. Maybe I'm reading too much into a song, but when I watch the passion fans have when they sing that song, it doesn't feel like I am.

softshoes 83 Report post Posted June 9, 2009 The best part is there are thousands of people in Pitt now who can't even bear to listen to Journey anymore. It is awesome to be there when the crowd gets going on it.
