Just a thought...

First of all, sports are great. I'm a die hard Wings fan and a die hard sports fan in general. I love (and hate) how I can become so emotionally involved with a group of people I've never met and when the times are good, they're awesome. But the flipside is, you live with a team, you die with a team. I've been fortunate enough that in the 15 years I've been a hockey fan I've seen my team in the Stanley Cup finals 6 times, and they've won 2/3 of them. Not too many people can say that. I made it up to Detroit last year for the finals and would've made it this year but I'm in training and the Navy wouldn't let me take leave. This loss SUCKS. There's no way to to sugarcoat it. It hurts to the very depth of my being.

Something happened though to help put things in perspective for me. I've had some other personal issues going on this week, and after the loss last night I found myself reflecting a bit on what I went through the past few days. For some reason I started thinking about the different stages of the grief cycle people go through when bad things happen to them. I couldn't remember all of them in order so I googled them. Without paying much attention I clicked on the first result and sure enough, I could trace my thoughts over the past week through every one of them. Then I noticed the webpage I had actually gone to. It was for Cancer patients and survivors. It hit me right then that as bad as I thought I had it, I'm still extremely fortunate to be happy and healthy and there are people out there facing real problems that make mine look so trivial.

Bottom Line: Last night was a bad night for Wings fans. Mourn the loss this weekend, then get over it. Next season starts in a few short months. :chug:

Your team won 6 cups? Who was your team before??

Fact is, the Wings winning or losing doesn't really change much in out lives. But we get attached, we put a lot of hopes and aspirations on their success. Pro teams help us take our mind off everyday problems and lets us get away. It's also a great way to meet fellow fans

I don't post on here much. . .

Being a passionate sports fan is like being in an abusive relationship, no matter how many times you get beat up and hurt, you keep coming back for more.

I agree with the OP 100%. I've actually lost sleep over these finals, which is unhealthy considering the fact that the worse possible outcome happened and I woke up this morning and will continue to live my life. It's just part of the territory of being a sports fan. Whether they miss the playoffs, fizzle out early or lose in game 7, once the sting goes away, you're ready to give it another run the following season.

With all of that being said, in reference to another point he made about witnessing the wings go to 6 Finals and winning 4, we're spoiled fans. How many other teams can say they've been given what the Wings have given us fans in the last 20 years? Everyone needs to sit back and reflect on it. I'm just as pissed off, and more baffled than anything about the way they finished off these last 2 games, but life goes on.

Stop blaming Hossa, Stuart, Sammy, Bettman, the officials and whoever else anyone wants to throw under the bus and accept the fact that the Wings came up short, but at the end of the day, you still love them and will be ready for this ride again come next season.

Hear hear, good post =]

Remember, we're fans. Short for fanatics. And the Red Wings are still the best team currently in professional sports, bar none. We'll be just fine.

Losing like that is about as hard as it gets for the players, but losing is also the greatest teacher, b/c a lot of the guys on the team won their first trip to the finals, while a few hold-overs had to lose in '95 before winning; but Hank said it best "We had our win last year but we'll learn from this too... We'll come back stronger"

Just look at the Pens, they lost last year and won this year, just sucks that sometimes you learn in reverse order or can't just learn from always winning
