Brad McCrimmon

Here's a little quote from Wikipedia...

Byron Brad McCrimmon (born 29 March 1959 in Dodsland, Saskatchewan) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman from Plenty, Saskatchewan who played in the NHL for 18 years, between 1979 and 1997. While not a terribly strong skater, he is widely considered one of the best and most punishing defensive defencemen of all time. Since 1997 he has been a coach.

Now, I started watching hockey in '95/96... This guy's prime was probably before then, so I never really knew him as a player. Can anyone vouch for this describing how punishing he really was? I just came across this Wikipedia article and never knew he was one of the most punishing defensive d-man of all time.

EDIT: I added a "d" at the end of his name, and I can't edit it... Can somebody do this before I look like a complete idiot?

I wouldn't describe him as punishing - he was an excellent crease clearing defenseman with the Flyers and the Flames probably wouldn't have won the cup in 89 without him. McCrimmon's biggest fault was his skating ability but he was an excellent positional D-man. As the players got faster his effectiveness diminished.

He was a solid and capable Dman for what seemed like forever. He never struck me as an elite Dman and certainly had tired legs aty the end of his carreer. I don't think he was ever one of the league's 20 most punnishing Defensemen though. I really don't recall him playing the budy much at all, but he did keep his stick on the ice and position himself well. I think I thought he was a pretty smart player.

He sucked when he was on the Red Wings and he sucks as an assistant coach with the Red Wings.

Why do you say that? If you are blaming the regular season's defensive lapses on McCrimmon, you must have missed the playoffs.

The Wings played 23 games in the playoffs and finished with only 2.09 GAA. Only Boston was lower with 2.00.

So if the defense was his fault in the regular season, then you have to give him credit for the defense in the playoffs.

You can only see what's happening on the ice. How can you tell from that the work of one of the coaches?

Was he even responsible of Red Wings' defense?

BTW, in Atlanta Ilya Kovalchuk, Bobby Holik, Marian Hossa and Mark Recchi all wanted McCrimmon to be the head coach.

If Im not mistaken he was Lidstroms mentor when he 1st showed up in the league, Im sure Lidstrom learned a few things from him. Someone should look him up on youtube.
