Guest micah Report post Posted September 3, 2009 1. A dirty play (running at the goaltender) is much different than a missed shot. EVERY player has missed shots. 2. My argument that Downey did have a dirty play once in his career is not disproven by this statement. why don't you shuttup your ***** mouth, I wasn't talking to you, I was talking to whoever it was that was talking about this one time at band camp when Downey got knocked down by Seabrook... One instance of being on the recieving end of a check is no more notable than one instance of missing the net or slipping and falling. Patterns matter, not instances. Dats does not make a habit of tripping over his own feet or missing the mark with his shots. Downey does not make a habit of getting his ass blasted to the ice from a body check or elbowing goalies in the head (unfortunately). I agree that running the goaltender is dirty, that downey did it, and that he is usually but not always a pretty clean player.
jollymania 162 Report post Posted September 3, 2009 wow Seabrook knocked him over what is your point lol... Seabrook smoked Dan Cleary over the f***in boards in the winter classic in front of MILLIONS.....he gave momentum to Chicago... let's make sure that is mentioned when Cleary signs his next contract cause its so relevant...... clown Hah my point is that was every hit for downey, the only guy i ever remember him catching good was big nasty kyle wellwood, take it easy dude, he is a good fighter but as an overall player he is absolute garbage. Downey always got nailed whenever he went to hit somebody, I was always liek "oh yes Downey for a big hit" then he would fall down on his ass because he has no concept on what having momentum is and hitting a guy when he doesn't see you completely. Actually, now that Downey is a former Red wing, he's probably looking pretty good to Holland.

If we had room for an enforcer... I still think he should be in GR teaching guys like Abyy how to at least stand up for themselves. he is a great guy and everything but for real people don't try to butter him up as at least an ok player who didn't get smoked every time he made a hit or didn't skate with his head down and get smoked that way. I see him bounce off guys all the time... for the amount of ice time Downey got in 07-08 I'd be surprised if he wasn't one of our top hit/minutes played ratios... he is unorthodox on the ice but he makes the simple, safe plays, that's what you want out of your 4th line....he was the only one of Draper, Maltby, Drake, Hartigan, Meech, Helm (our 4th line) to not have a negative +/- so he's not a liability... Downey is honestly a fine 4th line player, he plays responsible and gives it his all... he just doesn't look pretty doing so which makes a lot of people think he's horrible

And as for draper he is good on faceoffs, he is better than meech but meech can play d, isn't a pest like maltby though id prefer him over maltby, and didn't knock people into space with hits like drake. GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted September 4, 2009 why does eveybody suck his nuts like skacore? Both of these statements are 100% true. Because we haven't seen those kind of nuts in a long time in Detroit. People always want what they haven't had for a long time. We haven't had a full time enforcer for a long time, and we see other teams having one, so we want one too for entertainment value. It's really not that hard to figure out why we like Downey. Nobody ever said that he was a great skater or playmaker. That's just anti-Downey people making dumb arguments that no one is refuting.

Im not anti downey, I just think how s***ty of a player he is doesn't make up for his fighting and leadership. I'd like him in GR again mentoring the young players. Guest E_S_A_D Report post Posted September 4, 2009 (edited) Enjoy Phoenix Aaron, you will be in a city that has more (REAL) Wings fans than Detroit now. You know the old school fans that liked the Wings even before 1997? Now, time to avoid these forums for another few months, the naive rapport amongst some of the fans here amazes me. Thank goodness for the few, the proud, the ... wait, that's Copyrighted. Edited September 4, 2009 by E_S_A_D
