LOL... did a search on the costs. Your right not a few hundred. They are however having this exact issue in Britain right now...

If you listen to Bettman, you might even consider it chump change... over £20 million. ($33.3 or so million US)

Now... taking Vancouver's population of just over 500,000. Do you think it's worth an extra $60 dollars per citizen the city would have to pay to build the stadium? Even for only 30million? How about the fact that it's not a major venue for the Olympics (only 1 sport, versus stadiums that handle multiple sports)? How about the unmentioned money to maintain for the next 20 years?

I should take a picture of the Olympic stadium sign along I-110 in LA to give you an idea of 24 years of wear. I think it's flame is made of garland now.

Or maybe they could use GM place.

screw that, our turf our rules. All the best players play on NHL sized rinks anyways so it shouldn't be an Issue for them. Not sure about how the IIHF goes about this but think of it as a " Home-field " advantage for the NA playersm on Canada/US

Our turf, our rules? Not really. It would be so much more fun to see what these guys can do with the extra space of an international surface. Pretty disappointing.

As far as I know, if the games are in North American cities they play on NHL sized rinks. If it is outside of North America, it is on Olympic sized rinks.

No, they play on international sized ice whenever possible. The Salt Lake City rink (the main one) was larger than an NHL rink, but not quite international size.

It just didn't make sense to build a rink in Vancouver for an international sized rink when an 18,000 seat arena was already there.

yep.

pretty sure it wouldnt cost hundreds of millions.

It would because it would sit largely unused after the Olympics (because Vancouver still has GM Place, B.C. Place & PNE Coliseum) and would sustain all kinds of operating losses.

Have to look at the big picture. It just didn't make sense to build a new rink solely for the Olympics.
