Doc Holiday 0 Report post Posted December 1, 2009 But he'll still be overpaid. Higher cap also = higher salaries for other Free agents and possibly an increase in rookie max contracts and league minimums among other things. My point is his contract will seem smaller if the cap goes up. You are only proving my point when you say salaries for other players will go up. His will stay the same, so a 4.2 million contract may look like 3 million by the end of it, or smaller or bigger depending on the cap.
Jake Ryan 1 Report post Posted December 1, 2009 The Bruins tied a lot of money up in their goalie and best defenseman. I'm wondering if the Wings would be better off with a 5 million dollar goalie and without Rafalski.
FunkedUp 29 Report post Posted December 2, 2009 Great deal for the Bruins. For the sake of context: With his $4.2 million hit annually, Savard will cost less against the cap than Tim Connolly(notes) ($4.5 million), Daymond Langkow(notes) ($4.5 million), Martin Erat(notes) and David Legwand(notes) ($4.5 million each), Milan Michalek(notes) ($4.33 million) and Andy McDonald(notes) ($4.7 million). rage 24 Report post Posted December 2, 2009 So does that count against their cap this year because of the tagging rule which I have no clue about?
jeff48109 474 Report post Posted December 2, 2009 what a steal. Savard for $4.2 million? and guys like Spezza are getting $7 million.
rage 24 Report post Posted December 2, 2009 Yeah, I didn't realize he was 33. Still a good deal though.
ComradeWasabi 109 Report post Posted December 2, 2009 So does that count against their cap this year because of the tagging rule which I have no clue about? To my knowledge, the tagging rule means that a team cannot sign a player to an extension which would place their (future) cap hit over the current cap. ie. if a team has $1 million in cap space, they cannot sign a player to an extension which would increase the player's salary by over $1 million. I might be wrong, though. In any case, it's important to recognize that Savard is actually making $5 million this season; he actually signed for less than his current salary. Talk about a hometown discount, plus the tagging rule obviously doesn't apply.

toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted December 2, 2009 Great deal for the Bruins. From the Yahoo Blog here You can argue why Savard is better than all those players (definately from a purely offensive game.....though after that, there isn't much to Savard), but here is the key difference: Age when current contract expires: Savard - 40 Langkow - 35 McDonald - 35 Erat - 33 Legwand - 33 Michalek - 29 Connolly -
toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted December 2, 2009 what a steal. Savard for $4.2 million? and guys like Spezza are getting $7 million. Firstly, Spezza is clearly overpaid, secondly, his contract is up when he turns 31, not exactly comparable to paying a guy until he's 40. Let's not forget, at the age of 26, Spezza still has some room for improvement, while Savard, at the age of 33 is likely only going in one direction (these is generalizing of course). At the same age as Spezza, Datsyuk had yet to crack 70pts, so you never know how Spezza might develop.....though I see him as pretty much a bigger version of Savard (doesn't really use his size though)
