Barrie 900 Report post Posted December 14, 2009 I've wondered, on a 5 minute major penalty (not fighting, but hitting from behind, spearing, etc.) when a team is on a power play for a full 5 minutes, how does that work when keeping track of a team's season PP% stats? Does it count as just one chance? Also what happens if a team scores 2 times in the 5 minutes? Is that considered 2/1 on that Power Play?

mmamolo 287 Report post Posted December 14, 2009 yeah the way the NHL keeps track of PP stats is strange. It's only one PP opportunity. The reasoning is that rarely do you see teams score twice on a 5 minute powerplay so it, in a way, hurts their PP % by making it count as 1 for 2 with one goal scored on a 5 minute man advantage. However, if you think about it, since teams have PP% under 50% giving a 1 for 2 rating while scoring once on a 5 min man advantage does make more sense. Especially when considering in this scenario they would still get a bonus 1 on the PP when compared to 2 minors. What also doesnt make sense is if you go on the powerplay after being shrot handed then playing 4 on 4, for example a length of 33 second, and don't score that counts as a full 0 for 1. I've been a long proponent of the NHL ranking PP% efficiency based on goals per 2 mins of PP time.
Barrie 900 Report post Posted December 15, 2009 (edited) yes - it only counts as 1 PP, so you can increase your stats significantly... Thanks, I wasn't sure. I was wondering too if it worked similar to a double minor, where as if the team scored, then they start on their second chance, but still get the full 5 minutes.
