Olympic Opinion Question

Linky Dinky DOOOO

After reading this article it got me thinking:

In the beginning they refer to Yzerman being known as The Captain, my question is do any of you think this will help Yzerman steer the team?

He is known for his leadership, but not for being vocal, Gretz has been more than vocal especially as a coach, but shows little leadership (My opinion, could be way off, but not the point of the thread).

I know some Canadians on here may actually blame Gretz for the 06 7th place showing, as he did pick the team, and was the one responsible for putting it together.

Yzerman has Babs to be vocal, but can Babs take orders/directions from some one he once coached?

I am pulling for the US, but have a great interest in all of the teams playing. And if Canada is struggling (not saying they will) that helps everyone else involved.

Thoughts?

EDIT:

Some great quotes from the article:

San Jose Sharks center Thornton believes Yzerman’s leadership will help Canada reach its gold-or-bust goal.

“As soon as Stevie walks in the room, he has a presence like Wayne and Mario (Lemieux),” Thornton said.

Yzerman rarely showed emotion during his playing career and simply went about his business. Former Red Wings teammate Kris Draper, who played for Canada in Turin, said Yzerman’s demeanor will help the players manage the stress they’re about to face.

“He’ll be a calming influence for the guys,” Draper said. “We saw Wayne every day in Italy and I’m sure Stevie will be the same way.”

Yzerman isn’t so sure that will be the case.

“I’ll be around the team a little,” he said. “We’ve got a qualified coaching staff, so I’ll let them do their thing for the most part.”

Sharks defenseman Dan Boyle said the biggest part of Yzerman’s job has been done.

“The hard part was putting together what he thought was the right guys,” Boyle said. “Now, it’s up to the players and coaches to finish the job he started.”

I'm so torn at times, because I think Yzerman has all the tools to be an amazing GM in the NHL, but I also don't want to lose Holland, as he is a pure genius - eventually I imagine one of them will move on, but I hope I'm wrong and they both stay with the Wings, maybe becoming co-GM's at some point - very unlikely, but a guy can hope...

I think, like Holland, Yzerman will have the insight to get help from his coaches and scouts and fellow front office folks.

If Yzerman has one trait (big if) that is his greatest attribute it would probably be humility, the ability to get help from others and not fell degraded by doing so.

Agreed, I don't see why they can't both stay in Detroit, as they both have that trait and seem to work very well together on an executive level...

I just wonder if at some point Holland might take a huge payday and go to a team like Montreal or something and hand the team over to Yzerman... I'd be beyond blown away if Yzerman took a job anywhere else and it'd be like a punch in the gut if he did...

Either way - I hope they both stay and don't think it's completely out of the realm of possibility, just scares me to think about losing either...

I couldn't agree more with that statement.

However I would not be surprised in the least to see Holland walk away with Lids. He has said it many times, and I see replacing Lids as a huge endeavor when he retires. Not a great task for a new GM, hey go out and replace the best D-man to play in 30 or so years.

I wouldn't want that to be my first task!

With regards to the Canadian Olympic team, they are much better set up for success because the team is better put together with regards to roles being filled, and Yzerman taking the background role the GM belongs in with a strong coach who can control any oversized egos (hello, Sidney?) rather than jumping into the spotlight and trying to be in control while also choosing a coach who, while capable, was not willing to take the reins and push Gretzky aside, which provided a leadership issue.

As for the Detroit situation, Holland's future is going to be much like Devellano's. He'll continue on as a GM until he decides to retire, at which point he'll become a VP of something or other. Jim Nill may or may not have moved on by then, and Stevie may or may not even truly be interested in the GM job at the NHL level. But it's more than likely Yzerman is behind Nill in line for Detroit's job, and while possible, unlikely Yzerman would leave the Wings for another team's job.
