So I looked up Chelly's number to see how he's doing this year and I was amazed.

44 GP 21 PTS +35

The old man has still got some left and with numbers like that its hard to beleive he couldnt be the 6th or 7th defenseman on an NHL team.

I wish I would have been paying attention to the western road trip. He was playing a couple games within an hour of me and I didn't realize it until t was too late. I could have worn my Chelios BlackHawks jersey with the C on it and my Wings ball cap.

There's a reason that Chelios has been offered contracts with NHL clubs. He turned them down because he likes where he's at in the AHL. He's been playing a strong game and he's a top-line player, whereas in the big league he'd be on the bench too often for his tastes.

The key difference between the AHL and the NHL is speed of the game and it's the speed of the game that has passed Chelios by, so I'm not surprised that he does okay in the AHL, still has no place on an NHL team.

You do realize though, that he has as many points as Jakub Kindl in 7 less games and his +/- is 42 points better. I'm not saying hes 3rd or 4th defensman but he's outplaying MANY players half his age that the speed of the game hasnt supposedly passed by.

When people say the speed of the game, that's not just foot speed, it's decision making also. You don't need any stats to tell you Chelios career in the NHL is over. Anyone who watched him play over the past two seasons could see him having trouble with this. The only reason he wasn't embarrassed out there was because of his vast experience. For the most part he had to play a perfect positional game to be effective.

Stats are the worst thing to happen to sports, unless you an athlete or an agent. It gives people that don't understand the game a leg to stand on. If all sports teams had to do was look at stats, then why would they pay millions of dollars to their pro scouts? Because stats don't mean a damn thing when your trying to evaluate a athlete.

While stats dont mean EVERYTHING they certainly are meaningful. As i've said many time, I dont think Chelly can be a 1st to 4th D-man on an NHL team. But I have to beleive he could be a 5th or 6th guy on a few teams out there. I hope you werent trying to insult my hockey knowledge because I am as much of an 'expert' as anyone on these forums. Which is to say not an expert all but I think I am.
