High Scoring Playoffs So Far

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

I know each series has only gone a few games so far, but I can't remember the last time I saw so many goals scored in the playoffs. We've already seen several 6-5, 5-4 games, and of course we had that wild game in Phoenix last night.

This is the era of hot goaltending and low scoring playoff games, but I'm glad that so far the young and inexperienced goalies have been terrible. This makes hockey more fun to watch. It's kind of like a throwback to 80's hockey right now. Much was made about how many young goalies were starting these playoffs, and so far these young goalies aren't handling the pressure very well.

Here's to hoping that the high scoring and lousy goaltending keeps up. This is good for hockey!

I like goals.

Every series has been pretty interesting and entertaining so far. That's all I ask for.

Yes, but 6-5 games are more entertaining than all the 2-1 playoff games we were seeing a few years ago.

Now it seems like having a lead is almost meaningless. No one seems to know how to play with a lead, other than Nashville.

Like I said, it's early yet, but I can't ever remember the playoffs being so entertaining and wide open even for a few games. It's awesome right now.

Apparently the "8,000 posts for a game 3 win" thread is more intellectual. <_<

Dude, GMR, you've been a member on LGW long enough to know better than that.

Anyways that Caps game turned out to be a little odd to me. Just plain odd.

hockey would be better without this stupid "scoring" gimmick

That's what the Devils thought a few years ago.

Believe it or not, there are people out there who'd rather see low scoring, defensive minded games, and they're not just goalies. I've never been able to understand them.

I think the main reason might be all the inexperience you've got this year in the net... What aren't there like 5 tenders who are either rookies or have never started a playoff game this year?

On top of that, guys like Theodore, Varlamov, Nabokov, etc. have played in the playoffs before, but are very suspect with their play and were question marks going into these playoffs.

Your absolutely right... Nabokov is a joke! Why the Sharks still have him in net after last year's debacle boggles the mind...

The number of goals scored in no way, shape, or form has any impact on how good of a game it was. There are great 1-0 games, and there are s***ty ones. There are great 7-6 games, and there are s***ty ones. If you want to pretend the numbers on the scoreboard determine the value of the game, watch arena football.

Wow, I guess no one else likes the high scoring games and lackluster goaltending so far.

Apparently the "8,000 posts for a game 3 win" thread is more intellectual. <_<

Not more intellectual, just more important at the moment :P

But I agree, I like these games (when it's not the Wings playing them, anyway). Goals are a hell of a lot more fun to watch than 2 teams playing the trap, that's for sure. But I do enjoy low-scoring games too, as long as they've got good chances.

If I have the option of watching a good low scoring game or a good high scoring game, guess which one I'll choose every time?

And I'm guessing most would agree with me there.

Assuming, like you have, that I know the outcome, I would watch the BETTER GAME, irregardless of goal total, and I am guessing most would agree with me there.

I would agree but and maybe its just me there has really been a hell of a lot of s***ty goaltending and not necessarily skill so far...

But these games so far have been good games.

The goalies have just been worse than what we're accustomed to, and the scoring has been up as a result. I don't think teams are playing that much worse defensively or at some all-star mockery level.

The games have been good because a 1 or 2 goal lead isn't what it used to be in the past and because goalies are beatable now, instead of standing on their heads all the time. Like I said, it's 80's type hockey.

High scoring or not, all of these matchups have been really top notch. Granted its still quite early in round 1, but I can't remember a year in the past few years where every single matchup was played with such tenacity and energy. The teams are matching up well against eachother, it will be quite interesting to see how it all plays out.

While I can agree that goaltending, so far, has been off... I'm not going to call this 80's era hockey. I would, possibly, point to all the new goalies, and other players really, in the playoffs. I would bet it levels out in the second round.

i agree, every game has ben so intense with so much back and forth action all the way through. Usually when a team is up by two with 10 minutes leftits prety much a given who's gonna win. But in these playoffs it almost seems like you now they're gonna come back and tie it up.

Like today for the caps game, i knew there was no way the caps werent gonna score in the last 5 minutes.

Maybe it's just me, but I think the newer hockey stick technology might have something to do with the higher scoring too. The players can absolutely launch the puck from 30-40 feet out, in the past you'd have players trying to make plays near the net, now they don't even think twice about shoting from a bit further out.In any case I agree with GMR, it's been really fun.

Ken and Mickey reported that there is no difference when it comes to scoring goals. They said something like in the ten years since the composites have been out that the league has not produced significantly more goals than in the ten years before the composites.

Obviously we have to consider more factors than the type of hockey stick. Have goalies gotten better? Have defensemen gotten better? Stuff like that.
