Finnish Wing 110 Report post Posted April 21, 2010 http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=318903 Along with Zuccarello-Aasen he has been the hottest free agent right this season. Red Wings were reported to be among many other teams chasing him but he decided to go to Toronto. Almost a copy of Gustavsson or maybe Pekka Rinne. Was maybe the best goalie in the Finnish SM-liiga even though he played for one of the worst teams. Kind of a late bloomer.
miksteri 55 Report post Posted April 21, 2010 Yeah, they were almost as good as Ilves was with inferior players.

Finnish Wing 110 Report post Posted April 21, 2010 They not like The Monster anymore or is it just a depth move? He probably plays the next year in AHL with big minutes. But I see him definitely having a good future. He could well be as good as Rinne is, or even better. I also heard that Leafs are maybe moving Giguere in the future. dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted April 21, 2010 They not like The Monster anymore or is it just a depth move? They just re-signed Gustavsson so I'm pretty sure they like him, especially since he played very solid for them in the last part of the season.

Yeah they'll probably get rid of Giggy in a few years anyways. Plus, I'm sure The Monster's heart problems factored in a little.
Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted April 21, 2010 They not like The Monster anymore or is it just a depth move? Definitely a depth move. They just re-signed the Monster so they clearly still believe in him. Looks like they're playing this smart and making a smoother transition for this kid. MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted April 21, 2010 Good move. Gustavsson & Giguere are the duo for next year. Jiggy has one year left, so he's either gone or re-signed at an extremely reduced rate and Rynnas is brought along slowly. By the time Rynnas is NHL-ready, the Leafs should have a pretty good idea what they have in Gustavsson. Can never have too much depth in net.

He definitely had a rough start in the league with the heart problems and his mother dying shortly before he came over.
puffy 97 Report post Posted April 22, 2010 Nice signing. This doesn't really complicate the Gustavsson situation though. I think Rynnas needs to spend a year or two in the AHL either way.

puffy 97 Report post Posted April 22, 2010 I presume The Monster is Gustavsson? Yes, that was his nickname in the Swedish league. Of course the Toronto media hyped him to death and now that name has followed him to the NHL.
