newfy 695 Report post Posted June 13, 2010 There isn't a lot to talk about since its the offseason and I've been wondering this for a while now so I figured might as well start a thread about it. Emmerton is no longer waiver exempt after this upcoming season (I'm pretty sure) so does this kid have what it takes to play in the NHL? From what I've read, he has been somewhat disappointing but not bad enough to drop off the top prospect lists or out of discussion about our prospects making the team in the future. So anyone who has seen him play can maybe chime in here... Does Emmerton have the skill to be a solid NHLer in the upcoming years or is he a prospect that will sink into nothingness like so many do? Whats his skill set like?

uk_redwing 495 Report post Posted June 13, 2010 (edited) He has shown glimpses that he has the skill to be an NHLer. Sadly, he doesn't seem to show anything more than being a 3rd/4th liner and even then the glimpses of skill he shows are all to rare and hes been very inconsistant this season and posted up some disappointing numbers with just 12 goals in 76 games. The whole of the Grand Rapids team was very inconsistant last season, but Emmertons numbers have never been impressive since he arrived in 2007. As for his skill set...hes not the most physical...hes a decent skater and has a good set of hands and is a solid 2-way player, but just very inconsistant and can be invisible for large chunks of a season. titanium2 867 Report post Posted June 13, 2010 There are times when he shows flashes and makes some really smart plays for a couple of shifts. You think that if he did that more often then we'd have a Joe Pavelski in the making or someone similar to him. He and Pare played a lot together from what I remember so Fraser probably thinks those two fit pretty well together. If he's going to keep those two together, though, then that line should have someone with decent size that can retrieve pucks and create space, basically be a Holmstrom for Emmerton and Pare, the two skilled guys. But when Fraser had a line of Tatar-Emmerton-Mursak, we all saw that line make some nice plays together. A little bit of it is better linemates but he could definitely do more to stand out. Aussie_Wing 354 Report post Posted June 13, 2010 (edited) Yep, listen to the guys above, they watch GR, they know what they're talking about. He clearly has skill, some nights he can look dominant, however it's his inconsistency that holds him back. If he can ever improve that aspect and play with intensity every night, then he's a chance to be an NHL forward. He has great hockey sense, he just reads the play very well and you'd think that'd lead to more offensive production but it just hasn't come. The problem is that there's nothing that truly stands out in his game; he's a decent skater, has a decent shot, decent defensively, but there's nothing that you could identify as certain NHL talent. He needs a big season, something like 20 goals, 50 odd points and if he doesn't he'll drift off the Red Wings scene. He needs to play hard every night because if he does, then he's a chance to become a 3rd/4th line forward. Edited June 13, 2010 by Aussie_Wing
