    4/4 GDT : Red Wings 2 @ Coyotes 4

Pretty sure the game was changed back to just local channels. Jagr's first game with the Bruins was more interesting, apparently. You should be able to watch it!

    time to trade filppula?

The part I find most confusing is that we really can't "reload" via free agency this summer. Our needs are a solid #1-2 defenseman and a top-6 scorer. Very few options will be available. Maybe it all works out. I'm not a fan of being mediocre for a few years to have a chance at being good later. I'm glad we still have all of our prospects. Nyquist and Tatar are very good players, but the way Babcock is set on playing them on the 3rd and 4th lines just won't work. They're top-6 players. They need to play with talent to be useful.

An interesting point about our apparent deadline strategy

I agree that Quick isn't who he was in the playoffs last year, and that we aren't completely barren like I made it seem. I really really like Brunner, but he is still in his first year here and could very well be the guy we need if he steps it up a bit. Franzen is so much of a floater that I find it tough to list him up there (if only for me wanting to punish him for being so frustrating), but when he gives it everything he has, he is absolutely dangerous. Kronner has played strong offensively, but as you said, he has been rough in our own zone. I agree that maybe the problem isn't finding some #1 offensive guy, and that maybe we look for a solid defensive guy like Stuart was for us. Maybe it's Dekeyser for all we know! Also, I agree that Howard should be listed. Meant to have him up there. He's bailed us out of plenty of games this year and last.

An interesting point about our apparent deadline strategy

Let's look at the top teams that appear to have a roster deep enough to make a run for the Cup. From the West: Blackhawks: Kane, Toews, Hossa, Keith, Seabrook, Sharp. Canucks: Sedins 1 and 2, Kesler, and a group of solid-to-good defensemen. Ducks: Getzlaf, Perry, Ryan, Selanne. Wild: Koivu, Heatley, Parise, Suter. Kings: Kopitar, Brown, Richards, Carter, Doughty, Quick. From the East: Penguins: Crosby, Malkin, Iginla, Kunitz, Neal, Letang. Bruins: Bergeron, Horton, Krejci, Seguin, Lucic, Marchand, Chara. Rangers: Callahan, Gaborik, Nash, Richards, Mcdonagh, Lundqvuist. For the Red Wings? Datsyuk, Zetterberg,... Our big guys need help. Datsyuk can't carry the entire team himself. No one can. It's a team sport, and we don't have a solid team as a whole. Our bottom six can compete with most any other team. Our top six struggles. If we ice a line of Dats, Z, and (insert body here) like we used to, we've got a soft second line. We need a solid scoring top 6 player. Vanek, Gaborik, Eriksson, Ryan. Any of those guys would help, just to name a few possible options (pipe dreams?). We have two solid centermen! Then need a bit of help, though. On defense? Kronwall is not a #1 defenseman. He could be a great #2. But he needs someone there to make him better. Yandle? Myers? Either would help immensely. Whichever one would give us something to build around in the back end, while what we have currently are a bunch of good blocks with no cornerstone. Sorry for the uber-long post. Hope it made at least some sense!

with trade deadline approaching - who's our tradeable assets?

Thanks! I've been lurking and reading since '08, but never got around to posting. For him to be worth $5 million he needs a sniper alongside him.

with trade deadline approaching - who's our tradeable assets?

He's got great speed as a winger, and is a great passer. I just cant see him as being worth the same as Kesler or Bergeron... Maybe try Him with Datsyuk and Abs? Still too many passers with no sniper. I'd much rather have him do well here that have to package him for someone else. I'm hoping he can start shooting a bit more and stop trying to make one more pass every time he gets the puck. I put Ryan in there because he always seems to be on the trade block. He'd be a good fit here. Though don't we say that about nearly everyone?

with trade deadline approaching - who's our tradeable assets?

I've liked Flip for years. He has the potential to be so good, but he just hasn't proved he'll get there. He's good defensively with quick hands and some nice moves. His shot is better than you think, but he almost never shoots anyway. He has flashes of Datsyuk-like brilliance, but then those few moments are overshadowed by him trying to make too many moves or passes. He's a great player, but comparing him to other centers playing for around $5 dollars doesn't work out. Other forwards with a $5 or so cap hit are: Bobby Ryan Ryan Kesler Patrice Bergeron James Neal Mike Ribeiro Flip just hasn't proved that he is as good as these guys. He isn't there yet, and is running out of time to get to that level. I've wanted to keep him, but at $5 million? No. Not when he could be packaged for someone better. Flip + a defenseman + a pick would get a much better player than Flip currently is. Thats a solid package. Sure, it isn't gonna get Ovechkin or Weber. But it could make the Rangers or Ducks think about giving up Gaborik or Ryan. We need a solid #1-2 defenseman and a scorer. Depth on the bottom six? We're good. Get Helm back and our bottom six is taken to a new level.
