Any word on Brunner's cap hit?

You'd think they would finalize it, but with the agreement in place it might not be today. Holland and his aides are a little busy signing Gustavsson and trying to snag Suter and Parise.
  2. Strange, can't find a stats page for him on NHL.com. Didn't he play for Toronto last year?

    Pens Targeting Suter and Parise

I think the fact that Illitch and Chelios went to visit Suter and not Holland indicates he's likely to sign with us. If Holland has directed his attention at Parise, even though our #1 need is a defenseman, I'd say Holland is confident Suter is already in the bag. Suter will dutifully hear out all the pitches from all the teams, take a few days, and make a decision by mid-week I bet. I am a little worried by Holland thinking Parise is the harder nut to crack, though. Hopefully he can snag him, too.

i hope we dont panic if suter and parise signs elsewhere

Parise and Suter are obviously the center pieces. If you're concerned about the quality of the team they are coming in to, I'm sure Holland is letting them know that if they sign here he will make some lower level moves to round out the defense and forward corps. I think players like to think they are important, and even though the Wings have struggled the past few years, they would love to be the saviors of any franchise. And the Wings, out of all the teams in the league, have a proven tradition of winning and doing what needs to be done, so they are the team closest to turning things around, I think. Would you rather take a risk on a team like Minnesota which very well could miss playoffs again, or try to be the final piece on the Wings, which is going to make playoffs at the very least? I don't think Detroit is such a bad place to end up if you are a young UFA looking to be a hero and a Cup winner.

Ilitch, Chelios to fly to Suter, Holland to fly to Parise

Great news. I doubt we'll see any decisions made today, though. I've been looking forward to the start of free agency, but that's all this is: the start. Could still be a long summer.

    Pens Targeting Suter and Parise

We can offer Parise what Pittsburgh reportedly offered him. Holland just needs to find an angle to show Detroit would be a better fit for him.

St. James: Wings have inquired about Rick Nash

That's probably what it would take, but I'm not sure if giving up both Franzen and Flip is a good idea. Remember, we're likely losing Hudler, so if we lose Franzen there go our two top scorers. Nash and Parise are great an all, but goal-wise we'd probably be pretty similar, not improved. What we would see would be an increase in dirty goals and hard work, which is nice, but... I say give up Flip and plug in a scoring winger. Lazy as he is, I still like Franzen and think he will have a rebound year in 2012-13. I'd rather have something like Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Nash, Parise and Franzen than the same core without him, you know? If at all possible I want Holland to make this team absolutely top-heavy. I want to see the Wings dominate and have one of their "destined to win it all" years, especially since we wouldn't be mortgaging our future.

    Pens Targeting Suter and Parise

Indications point to Suter not going to want to go East, so I doubt Pittsburgh is really a final destination spot for him, unless they're able to offer him considerably more than Detroit or any other team. Minnesota could be a dark horse if they could land Suter AND Parise. They'd get to play together and Minnesota pursuing both could convince them that Minnesota was serious about becoming a playoff team.

    Paul Gaustad re-signs with Predators

Welcome to Detroit, Mr. Gaustad! Bring Mr. Suter with you.

who's on the outs if we sign multiple forwards?

Emmerton should be gone regardless of the situation. He adds nothing and just eats up a roster space. I think people toss in Eaves' name because they forget what he's done on this team. I'd say missing Eaves was one of the elements that really hurt the Wings this year and I can't wait for him to come back. He adds some depth to the team that we sorely need. He also has some offensive ability that he's never really been allowed to unleash on the Wings, either. As far as the "tough" choices go, I think Abdelkader has become expendable under certain circumstances. Basically, we'd have to find a grittier forward with more offensive upside to really make it worthwhile. If he were traded for a scorer, then he would only need to be replaced with a comparable forward. I personally like Abdelkader and I'd love for him to be a part of a new era "grind line" and I'd rather he not go, but this season he didn't do much to make himself seem completely integral to the team. But maybe he just had an off year.

    Filp at center?

But Datsyuk and Zetterberg were split up because they stopped having that high level of chemistry that made them the Eurotwins to begin with. When they are reunited they generally don't dominate like they usually do separately. That's why they stay apart, I think. They've evolved into being their own players, but when they were younger they complemented each other more, I think.

Valtteri Filppula - we should get him locked up as soon as possible

I think he's plateaued to be honest with you. I would give him 3.5 or 4 million a year if we had to, it wouldn't be outrageous, but I don't necessarily see him being a career Red Wing.
  13. VM1138

    Hudler to test free agency

If he leaves Kenny's job just got harder. For all the flak Hudler takes, he's still a 25 goal scorer, which means now we need to find TWO top 6 scorers if we want to improve on last year. As with most people the cost is the big issue to me. I'd take him at 3 million, but at more than that he just doesn't provide the grit or the reliability we need as a team.

Red Wings OUT of bidding for D Justin Schultz

People are acting like children in here. "Well, if he doesn't want to come here, he's just a loser. I'll take my toys and go home." Anyone think maybe he just wants to play for his hometown (Vancouver) and it wasn't a slight against the Wings? Or perhaps the Wings only offered him bottom pairing minutes and some other team offered him something better?

D Wideman traded to CGY, signs 5-yr contract

Not necessarily. If only 2 or 3 teams can afford a player like Suter, for example, Wideman's signing doesn't affect those teams or his price. But 8.5 is just a million or so higher than we expected.

    Parise Likely Out. Next Options

And therein lies the rub. Crosby may have done the whole league a favor. It's hard for most players to say they should be making considerably more than Crosby.

    Parise Likely Out. Next Options

I get the mentality of some of you with his price tag, but I wish this bad nightmare of Semin would just go away. We don't need another lazy floater. However, I would love for Doan to play for the Wings. If we can't get Parise there are some interesting second tier combos that will give us some well rounded depth but not the natural firepower we need.
  18. VM1138

    Pens Targeting Suter and Parise

I still think we land both. All we know is that Parise went to the same school as Crosby, but that doesn't mean they like each other or are friends. Holland just has to realize that it's okay to slightly overpay for great talent.
  19. Man, Babcock is sure taking a lot of heat on the comment section of that MLive article. Really unfair I think. I don't remember him ever saying Brunnstrom and Nyquist were going to play the Top 6 straight upon their arrival. I remember him saying Nyquist will one day be a top 6, but not necessarily at that moment. I dare to get my hopes up on this Brunner experiment.

    Zach Parise

The thing with having all these young draft stars is that you have what, three years to compete for the Cup? After that their contracts expire and you are guaranteed to lose some of them if they all turn out to be stars.
  21. Sounds like he has a good head on his shoulders, though, which sets him a bar above Grigs, Brunnstrom (when he first arrived in the NHL), Leino, etc. Grigs was arrogant and entitled, as was Brunnstrom. Leino was obsessed with finding a girlfriend and having fun. But from what I've heard Brunner is a no-nonsense kind of guy and that could help him over here. Although credit where credit is due, Brunnstrom has evolved and now has a much better attitude and work ethic.

Red Wings 2012 Round 2 Selection- Martin Frk

I noticed his skating didn't look too great in those highlight videos. Does anyone know how to pronounce his name? Is it Frik or Ferk?

    2012 NHL Entry Draft Discussion

Just once I wish we were able to draft someone who could start playing this year. Superstar at 49th pick isn't too unreasonable, is it? Haha. I hate admitting that Pittsburgh's GM is really good. That team has made some great moves over the past few years to stay in contention. Picking 8th was a nice touch. And they really seem to have loaded up on picks.

Red Wings 2012 Round 2 Selection- Martin Frk

That's the first thing I noticed, Soup Snake. And damn, what is with all the concussed draftees the past few years? Something has got to be done about this.
