Absolutely. That's why I figure We'll see Russo as the go to dman in GR next season. See if he can build upon this season as the go to guy before getting his shot with the Wings. Sproul will likely take a bit of time to adjust, which is why I think it would be great for him to start as the #7 and work on earning NHL minutes over time.

I just mean a legit top 4 NHL dman. Someone who can produce, help with the pp, etc. And also be the all important righty.

Tampa is a deep team with loads of experience from last years' play off run. What they are pulling off now while missing so many key players no longer surprises me. I do hope that their current success with Stamkos not in the lineup makes them less willing to dish out the kind of money he is looking for.

And by the time we're right before the expansion draft, unless teams happen to have open slots to protect players, there won't be much in the way of buyers.

Oh sorry I misread. I read it as 2 year pros need protection. If they are safe than that is ace. To the one who said to leave Goose and Tatar unprotected... hell no. This summer Holland needs to decide who he will protect. Whoever falls outside of said protection, he needs to trade em. Get prospects and picks for guys with value who'd likely be drafted. This team won't be a contender next season, so trade the guys we'd likely lose and then make a run for it the season after. It would be dumb have another mediocre season to only lose guys for nothing the following summer.

But the AHL is considered pro. Which meas guys like Russo, Mantha, AA (if I'm interpreting the rules correctly) would require protection.

I thought players on their second year pro need protection? He'll have 2 years in the AHL under his belt come next summer.

Sadly buying out Niemi would result in a 1.5 mil cap hit for 4 years.

Ahh okay. I thought it was a case of one full year pro makes a player require protection, but it's two.

I have a s***ty feeling Howard now gets moved for Niemi, due to him making a little less and only having one year left.

I do wonder if any of the 3 top draft picks this year will be kept in the juniors to start the season and only play in the NHL long enough to not have to be protected next summer.
