St. James: Wings have inquired about Rick Nash

For starters, we're not really a "rival". The Wings are a first place team, the Jackets are a lottery pick team. Both franchises are at different points in development. Its not like trading Nash to the Wings now will screw them out of a division crown. Second, we'll be giving them players too. Whether it be Franzen, Filppula, Smith, Jurco, Tatar, or whomever, we're going to have to deal with those players when we play them. The players we would be giving them are players we're counting on to be stars in the future. Its not like its a salary dump here. The Wings want to be good now and we get a player that's good now. The Jackets want to be good in the future and we give them players that should be good in the future. Both teams would be getting what they want and need and that's the point of trading right?

Has the Detroit diamond lost it's shine?

I don't think their decisions were an indication of Detroit not being the "in place", I think it had more to do with the fact that they wanted to be close to home and play together. There's really nothing we could have done in this situation since that was their plan. I'll be interested to know what their plan will be in 5 years when the team has only made the playoffs twice, Parise is barely reaching 30 goals a year, and they feel the way Rick Nash feels now. Maybe signing a long term deal with a franchise that hasn't done anything in the last 10 years wasn't such a good idea after all.

Holland comments on Suter & Parise going to Wild

I don't think there was anything Holland could have done differently and to be honest, I'm glad he offered what he felt those players were worth and not what the market said they should get. Sure, we don't get the big name free agents, but in the long run one of our keys to success is not overpaying for players. Z, Datsyuk, Franzen, Kronwall and Howard are well below what they could be getting on the open market. The "we've got all summer" comment was for people that act like the season starts tomorrow. We have the next three months to trade and/or sign UFAs. Just because we didn't get Parise and Suter doesn't mean the holes we need to fill won't be filled now. Instead of getting Parise, maybe we get Semin and Doan. Instead of Suter, we get Yandle and Scott Hannan.

Suter Watch: Decision today, down to Wings/Wild

I would disagree with that. There are teams that are consistently near the top and a threat to win a championship every year. Vancouver, Boston, Washington, Pittsburgh, Chicago, San Jose and Detroit to name a few. The Pens entire defense was exposed badly this past postseason. Now they've lost Staal, their best defensive forward and Michalek, one of the few defensive defensemen they had. They have plenty of holes and plenty of free agents next offseason. That seems to be the trend in recent years, win the Cup, get knocked out in the first round or miss the playoffs the next year, so its not just the Wings. Also, the Wings have been in this position before. After back to back Cup appearances, they got knocked out in the 2nd round by the same team two years in a row and then got knocked out in the first round. It didn't deter Hull and Robitaille signing with Detroit then. Anyways, my point there was, if I'm signing a long term contract somewhere, I'd want to go somewhere that has a long history of success.

Suter Watch: Decision today, down to Wings/Wild

I get that. There are plenty of attractive options out there for these two players, but if they want to be on a good team that can contend for a Cup now and play together, the Wings are the best bet. We're still one of the elite teams in this league and we have tons of cap space to not only sign them, but add even more. Logically, the Wings make the most sense if they are in fact trying to play together and be on a winning team. The Pens would be a great option, but signing both doesn't seem likely without having to take less money and even if they did that, they would be right against the cap. The Wild would be a feel good come home story, but its the Wild. We've made it to the Finals as many times as the Wild have made it to the playoffs (3). Would you feel comfortable signing a life time deal with a franchise that has that kind of track record? Ask Rick Nash how he feels about it now. While obviously we WANT Parise and Suter here and we'd love to have them here for our own personal reasons, it also makes logical sense to play in Detroit as well.

Suter Watch: Decision today, down to Wings/Wild

Russo is Minnesota media and Lawton is a former North Stars player. When unbiased reporters start saying this, then I'll believe it.

Suter Watch: Decision today, down to Wings/Wild

They might be doing this if they were both free agents and wanted to get the best deal to play together on the same team. I really don't like everyone attacking these players character because we're in day 3 of the UFA period and they haven't signed yet. These talented players, who are interested in joining our team and possibly wearing the winged wheel for the next decade, need some time to think about what is the biggest decision of their professional career. It shouldn't be taken lightly and they need to take everything into account. If they choose us, great. If not, oh well, good luck to them wherever they go. Being pissed at a couple of players that COULD still be Red Wings because they need a little extra time to decide where they want to play is ignorant. We're Red Wings fans, let's act like the franchise and show some class and patience.

Suter Watch: Decision today, down to Wings/Wild

He was already in Minnesota, so its not like they made a special trip to get him. Honestly, I can't see him signing with the Wild over us. Enter into a long term contract with a mediocre team? I know that maybe there's this feeling that "Hey I can be a pioneer and make this franchise great", but I bet Rick Nash felt that way a few years ago too. Nothing worse than watching a talented player waste away the prime of his career on a bad team.

If he did, they'd need wider hallways.

Well there you go. If he signs with the Wings, he won't be getting humiliated by Datsyuk anymore. lol

I can guarentee if Parise doesn't pick the Pens, he'll get booed every he touches the puck when he plays against the Pens in Pittsburgh. lol

Suter Watch: Decision today, down to Wings/Wild

For all we know the hold up could be because Parise and Suter are trying to get good deals from the same team so they can play together.

Suter Watch: Decision today, down to Wings/Wild

My thought is Suter wanted $100 mil. The Wings offered $80 mil. He called the Wings and "I want to play for Detroit but $20 mil is too much of a gap. Up it to $90 mil and I'll take it." So they did. Why haven't they announced it? If the Wings are going to sign Parise too, they're going to announce them together. Probably wishful thinking, but it does make sense.

Parise Watch [update x2]: Red Wings OUT of Running

I have a hard time seeing Parise sign with another team in the Atlantic division. He doesn't strike me as the kind of guy that leads his team to the Finals, then in the off season joins a division rival because he says that has the best shot at a championship. I don't think he'd do that to NJ. Which means its really down to us and the Wild.

Parise Watch [update x2]: Red Wings OUT of Running

While I agree that Pittsburgh is a good choice, I wouldn't put them above Detroit. Solid defensive core? Did you see the first round? Cup winning goalie? Yeah, SJ has one of those too. While the Wings haven't made it beyond the 2nd round since '09, the Pens have lost 3 of their last 4 playoffs series since '09. We want to be pleasantly surprised.

    Nash to Detroit?

Nash probably will be a better cap hit. Its interesting though because if we trade a couple guys like Franzen and Filppula, they're combined salaries, would make taking on Nash's contract a wash, leaving us with about as much cap space as we have now. So potentially, we could still be in the running for Parise and Suter if that were the case. However, we'd be still thin at defense if we got all three and have very little cap space left if that happend. Still it'd be fun!

Wings may trade Johan Franzen for Rick Nash?

Absolutely. We've demonstrated year after year that 1st round picks don't really mean anything us. We get quality players in every round of the draft. Losing Filppula and probably Franzen too, would be tough, but you're getting Rick Nash here. A young goal scoring power forward that can put up 40-50 goals easily with Datsyuk or Zetterberg. You know what they say, you've got to break a few eggs to make an omelet. As I've mentioned in other posts, acquiring Nash would like when we acquired Brendan Shanahan. We gave up Keith Primeau and Paul Coffey, a couple of important parts to their success back in those days, but it wasn't enough to win them a championship. Shanny put them over the top.

Red Wings Sign Jordin Tootoo to 3-yr deal, $1.9M/yr

I like this signing. Hard hitter, fast, good energy and Holland said something like "This signing is out of our comfort zone". The guys on NHL radio took that as "We signed you to be the way you were in the WHL, not the way you've been in Nashville". I do remember him being an offensive force in the WHL. He won't be that good in the NHL, obviously, but a hard hitting energy guy that has scoring touch sounds like a somebody that would make us tough to play against in the playoffs.

St. James: Wings have inquired about Rick Nash

I was trying to imagine if I was Columbus, what would I want in return for Nash. Franzen, Filpulla, Smith and a 1st rounder was the first thing to come to mind.

Predictions on where players will land

As am I. Put Nash on Datsyuk's line all year and he's a 50+ goal scorer. He's making $7.8 mil, but its looking like Parise is going to cost that much and Nash is a much better goal scorer than Parise. Plus, I think a trade like this would really shake up this franchise which really hasn't changed since winning the Cup in '08. Sometimes a shake up is needed. We lost Dino Ciccarelli, Keith Primeau and Paul Coffey in one off season who were big parts of our success and just added Brendan Shanahan, but that was a needed shake up that gave more ice time to guys like Draper, McCarty and Lapointe that made us different to play against and a better playoff ready team and we went on to win back to back Cups.

    Pens Targeting Suter and Parise

I'd be much happier seeing Holland trade for Bouwmeester and/or Yandle than overpay Suter. The free agent market is thin on defense, but we're lucky that their just happens to be a couple good d-men out there with affordable contracts dangling out there for trade.

    Paul Gaustad re-signs with Predators

I don't think its overpayment at all. He was making $2.3 mil. The Preds used a first round pick to get him, he did well, was a part of their win over us in the playoffs, he's going to get a raise, $3 mil sounds about right. You could make the argument he wasn't worth $2.3 mil before, but after what he did for them and what they traded to get him, they have to give him a raise.
