    Wings interested in Garrison

I agree. I see both those guys taking the contract/situation that is the best fit not necessarily the most lucrative.

Red Wings make contract offer to D Justin Schultz

I find it hilarious how every one is getting boners over Schultz when the bulk of people on this forum have probably never seen him play. Every few months a new flavour of the week player gets into the media and every one on this forum goes crazy wishing the Wings would sign that player. Last summer so many people were going nuts over Christian Ehroff and/or James Wisniewski and now everyone is happy the Wings didn't touch them. I'm not saying Schultz will/would end up being a disappointment but so many people talk out of their asses about players they literally know nothing about.

    Would you make this trade?

Brooks Laich has a $4.5M cap hit and has never scored more than 25 goals. Mike Green is an RFA who made $5.25M last season and is four years removed from his 31 goal season. I don't understand how you come up with 50+ goals from those two. They would both have to reach their career highs of a number of years ago. I'm not saying I don't like those two guys but even if Green signed for the same amount as last season you'd be talking about a combined $9.75M cap hit. You can do a lot better than those two for that cap hit. Not to mention the Wings would have to move players to get those two.

Vokoun moved to Pittsburgh for a 7th Round pick.

Same here Same here I'm not upset about the Vokoun deal. I wouldnt want the Wings to pay him that much nor sign him for 2 years. I want an established, but younger-ish goaltender to push Howard. The issue, to me, is that when you have a back up pushing the starter it's always possible that the back up ends up winning the job. Would any one here be happy if someone as old as Vokoun pushed and stole the starting job from Howard? No, but if it was someone like Harding who did that and then could be a viable option moving forward we'd all be more OK with that. I think a younger established guy like Harding would be perfect.

  6. I understand it's the best players who happened to have played for the Wings at one point but the fact harvey played just 2 games for DET is a little cheesy

Just ignore people who complain. Just as most readers here don't want to read posts where people complain about thread topics or ***** and moan, they probably don't want to read posts where people bemoan the complainers.

Bob McKenzie also noted that GMs will most likely be able to work under the guise of a $70.3M and that regardless of how a new CBA shakes out will not be penalized for working with that cap. To me, that indicates that if the players % of Revenue drops from the current 57% that all current player contracts would probably take a roll back. So even if the final cap number next season doesnt turn out to be $70.3M, you can look at the current state of affairs and market values of players to determine signings and then anticipate a roll back of all future salaries. Why, on a team that lacks RD, would you place the two natural RDs together and put two natural LDs (Kronwall and Suter) together?
  10. Agreed. I'd like to see Quincey at his 5% raise which is close to $3.3M. Then I'd prefer to see Helm at $1.5 and Abdelkader at $1.2. That would be $6 total. but I could see each being slightly higher.

I really hate him too. His whiney attitude after the Yotes got knocked out reaffirmed everything to me as to why I dislike him. That being said, he can be a pretty good hockey player when he wants to be

    Post-Lidstrom CapGeek Thread

Ok, I'll play along, with $70M cap: FORWARDS Gustav Nyquist ($0.875m) / Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) / Zach Parise ($7.000m) Valtteri Filppula ($3.000m) / Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / David Jones ($3.250m) Johan Franzen ($3.955m) / Darren Helm ($1.500m) / Todd Bertuzzi ($2.075m) Danny Cleary ($2.800m) / Justin Abdelkader ($1.200m) / Patrick Eaves ($1.200m) Drew Miller ($0.838m) / Jan Mursak ($0.550m) DEFENSEMEN Niklas Kronwall ($4.750m) / Jonathan Ericsson ($3.250m) Ryan Suter ($7.000m) / Kyle Quincey ($3.250m) Brendan Smith ($0.875m) / Ian White ($2.875m) Jakub Kindl ($0.883m) GOALTENDERS Jimmy Howard ($2.250m) Josh Harding ($1.250m) ------ CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter) (these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion) SALARY CAP: $70,000,000; CAP PAYROLL: $67,408,712; BONUSES: $37,500 CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $2,591,288 This works because if Nyquist can't handle top line minutes then you can elevates Jones, Franzen, Cleary. Plus, Bertuzzi and Cleay can rotate on the 3/4. Also, in a pinch if someone gets hurt down the middle you have enough capable wingers that Flip can centre until the injury is done. Also, on the back end I would personally love it if the Wings could get Schultz. I would even just move White and replace him with Schultz possibly switch with Quincey so two rookies aren't paired together right away. But realistically you could have above. Plus, I wanted Josh Harding last summer and he always dominates against the Wings. He's young enough that he could push Howard but established enough to know his role is the back up unless he can absolutely steal the starting spot.

    Which Players Would You Choose

There is no way Weber is leaving the Preds this summer. He may very well leave next summer, especially if Suter is gone now, but that is a topic for next year. but obviously, I dont think there would be many who would pick Doan over Weber. Imagine the Wings D as: Weber - Suter Kronwall - Ericsson Smith - Schultz/Quincey I figured since we were dreaming we may as well dream big

    Red Wings Next Captain

It absolutely will be Zetterberg. I would be shocked if any one else was named. That's not a knock on any other players (i.e. Datsyuk, Kronwall) but Zetterberg has everything. To those wondering about potential signings in Parise and Suter, I think we all know that's not how the Wings work. Those guys would be groomed for the future post Z/D/Kron

Hasek wants to play in the NHL again

Honestly, normalyl I am against players coming out of retirement etc. but I'd actually be interested in seeing Hasek return to the NHL. I feel like if any retired hockey player would have a shot at coming out of retirement and being pretty good Hasek would be that guy. I'm not saying I'd want to see that effort made with the Wings but if he signed some where else I'd be interested in seeing it unfold

    Capgeek Rosters

I'm not one who thinks Lidstrom should/needs/will take a pay cut. However, I personally don't think that Holland/Lidstrom/Illich are silly enough to go through the situation you described above. If the idea of Lidstrom taking a pay cut was ever to be tossed around I would think that it would be on the premise that a star is signed with that surprlus of money. Meaning: Lidstrom wouldn't sign a new contract until later in the summer when that star has been signed. If Holland sets out to get a star but the market is too tough and ends up with squat then Lidstrom doesnt have to take the cut.

Red Wings make offer to Damien Brunner

To me, Semin is another streaky goal scorer. I don't personally want the wings to go after him unless they got a sweetheart deal which is unlikely. But the ridiculous amount of people who are buying into the hype of Semin being lazy with a bad attitude is crazy. Watch some Caps games - his reputation is not completely justified (i.e. it's over blown)

Suter most likely out of Nashville

I guess that's what Im saying though. For example, say the Wings sign someone like Suter this summer and Lidstrom returns. Smith would have to play his way onto the team. He'd have to show enough in camp to make the Wings realize they have no choice but to enter him into the line up on a regular basis. I know a lot of people think Smith would have benefitted this season with the Wings to learn from Lidstrom even if that meant he wasn't in the line up each and every night. Some times (for certian players) I would agree with this type of situation. But as good as Smith was this season when he was with the wings I personally am glad he spent the year with the Griffins because I think he got more out of it.

    The Astuteness of Paul Holmgren.

Obviously Bryzgalov was nowhere near his typical form this season but I think too much is being made of his quirky personality. The only difference from passed seasons and this year is that his quirky personality is getting more attention since he plays for the Flyers and not the Coyotes. It's not like the guy just developed this quickiness over night. That being said, I don't think enough is being made about the injuries the Flyers had on the blueline this year. Bryzgalov will be better next year.

Suter most likely out of Nashville

That's a complete fantasy. No way Jurco comes into camp and shows that he absolutely, 100% must be added to the roster. But for argument sake, let's say that any of the Wings prospects shows up and dominates then the Wings would clear a roster spot for him. People always assume that because the Wings typically keep their prospects down in the minors longer than most teams that they wouldn't put a young kid on the team if he absolutely showed he had to be there. Now, that being said maybe the Wings' idea of a kid showing he has to be there is tougher than some other teams but that doesnt mean everyone on the roster is safe. It may be rare but it's not impossible

    The new guys thoughts.....

Although I don't agree with a lot of what you have said in this thread I do like the possibilities of Carle and Wideman. I have also long thought Jones would be a great pick up. Personally, I would like to say Jones brought in while letting Hudler move on.

Suter most likely out of Nashville

    1. Unrealistic: You expecting Franzen to put up big numbers every single playoff run including years (like this year) when the entire team struggles. You may point to last season as well if you want but he was injured so personally I dont buy it. I am not saying Franzen was great this year and I'm not saying he couldnt have been better or did more. But it is unrealistic to expect him to dominate each and every year. No one does that. 2. Franzen isn't an elite player and shouldnt be counted upon as one. The Wings didn't/don't have enough depth (which includes top 6 depth) as a team. Franzen is a tweener - he's not elite but he is better than a lot of secondary stars. If you expect Franzen to dominate against the other teams top pairings all the time you will be disappointed. It's like countless teams in the league who don't have a legit Number 1 centre. They plug their best centre in that slot and then fans are pissed when the guy puts up ~50 points instead of true top line centre numbers. 3. Fair weather and fickle does not imply that you are hot and cold with the team. Fair weather implies that when things are great you're all about them and fickle means when things are bad you're totally against them.

Suter most likely out of Nashville

There are way, way too many fair weather Wings fans on this forum these days. I can't believe how many turn coats there are here. Last year Franzen was hurt and this year in the playoffs the bulk of the Wings players were no shows in the playoffs. Is Franzen an elite player? No. Woudl he be better served if there were other stars ahead of him in the depth chart so the other teams couldn't key up on him? Of course. You guys are all way too fickle and unrealistic
