People forget Green was nominated for the Norris along with Chara and Lidstrom. He put up 31 goals one season. Those numbers (and his point totals (70+)) replace Franzen easily. Franzen's contract doesn't look bad now, but wait 2 years when he becomes even more complacent and then realize he has like 5 years more than that on the contract. Rather start fresh. My ideal replacement was Jones but Semin or Doan would do as well. People forget that Semin plays on the PK too which Franzen doesn't and has a right shot. We have enough guys that can take draws, Heck we have an overabundance of centres (on the team and coming up the pipeline).

Id take him over Franzen and He would go nice with Suter. Has a right shot (we need). And put up 70+ points for 2 seasons before getting 3 unrelated injuries (bad luck). If he had a chronic injury I would be concerned (like a recurring shoulder issue) but I think he's just had bad luck. He isn't as terrible as you think (was nominated for norris) and we do need some points from the back end now that lids and rafi are both gone.

Just putting things in perspective: Kronner played less than 2 seasons in GR, Fil played 1 season in GR. Nyquist and Smith (assuming they stay up permanent) each played 1 season in GR. Dats, Z, Franzen played a total of 0 AHL games before joining the wings. Heck, Ericsson (the last pick in the draft) played less than 2.5 seasons in GR. I think at this point, you could offer a 2way contract for first year and guarantee 1way after that. kinda like what they gave macdonald. At least that guarantees him that in the future he will be a part of the team and has the opportunity to make the big team this year if he brings it. 3 year deal (1st year 2way) and give him the opportunity to earn it in his first year. I just don't want to see some aging UFA dman absorb a spot on our d for 3 years to come. Sign a stop gap for the third pairing for a 1 year contract and let Kindl and him battle it out (so kindl doesn't rot away).

In my defence I posted that yesterday BEFORE Jones re-signed. However, there are other players available through free agency to replace Franzen (Semin). I would still do Green for Franzen, White, maybe a pick. Franzen is getting up there (and is lazy) and his contract will look worse each year. I think it would be wise to move him and that contract while he still has value and teams want his scoring. So the question is: Would the Caps do: Green for Franzen, White, Mid Pick
-
s***. would have been a sick franzen replacement if we used him to trade for d.

Here me out on this... I think there is something there in this trade. Its just you need to tweak it a bit as Green>Franzen+Kindl but Helm>Laich. Det - Mike Green RFA Wsh - Johan Franzen, Ian White, (Maybe a pick if needed?) Then we go and do something like this: CAPGEEK.COM USER GENERATED ROSTER My Custom Lineup FORWARDS Zach Parise ($7.500m) / Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) / Gustav Nyquist ($0.875m) Valtteri Filppula ($3.000m) / Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / David Jones ($4.000m) Danny Cleary ($2.800m) / Darren Helm ($2.000m) / Todd Bertuzzi ($2.075m) Brandon Prust ($1.000m) / Justin Abdelkader ($1.000m) / Patrick Eaves ($1.200m) Drew Miller ($0.838m) / Cory Emmerton ($0.533m) / DEFENSEMEN Ryan Suter ($7.500m) / Mike Green ($5.000m) Niklas Kronwall ($4.750m) / Jonathan Ericsson ($3.250m) Brendan Smith ($0.875m) / Justin Schultz ($2.000m) Jakub Kindl ($0.883m) / GOALTENDERS Jimmy Howard ($2.250m) Josh Harding ($1.250m) ------ CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter) (these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion) SALARY CAP: $70,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $67,362,500; BONUSES: $37,500 CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $2,937,500 Bertuzzi is the only lazy player left on the team. Alternative to Schultz is sign Quincey at 3.5mill. That D looks too good (if green stays healthy). Green would replace White's right shot but he has size and the potential to be a huge point producer. Jones replaces Franzen on the right wing but with a more reasonable contract length and a right shot. Next season we can part ways with Cleary if he doesn't have it together this season and insert Tatar. Pretty good situation for the future. I think all contracts are reasonable cap hits. Let me know what you think.

I can't wait until someone takes a chance on the kid and he turns out to be a stud and kipwinger complains that we never grabbed him. a year ago i was begging people to consider a huddler ericsson and a 1st trade for bogosian and everyone acted like the kid was not worth it. now look at him. He's a number one on winnipeg. we need to take chances on younger players. it can pay off sometimes and otherwise schultz is a tradable asset that we acquired for nothing (or stuarts ufa rights).

hell ya, i totally agree. I want Quincey gone no matter what. He just sends bad vibes through the d. I can see so many people praising our young d for the future if we got smith and schultz together.
-
Smith and Nyquist are born in '89 and schultz in '90. This kid has been out of the nhl and earning it long enough since his draft year. Just because he developed outside of GR and the wings org. doesn't mean he hasn't earned it.

Hmmmm..... I think I'd rather have Schultz at this point just because he has a higher ceiling for the future and has a right shot. For me, I'd rather go through some growing pains with smith and schultz this season than be continuously "okay" on defence. Might as well go through the potty training with these kids and have them around for the long term future. Wouldn't cost as much to get Schultz either.
-
No way we give up the compensation. Our style is not to mortgage the future for the present. Suter and weber would be overkill and u dont want to be that gm that offersheets players to handicap their team cause its gonna come back to bite you.

But he needs money to pay cab fares...

Im my mind - yes. Its very evident that homer doesnt fit anywhere on the team currently and his body is probably screaming for mercy.
-
Its interesting and true that lids has been the heartbeat and backbone of the wings. But if his will to play and win is gone as it seems it now is, then the team as a whole loses that too. I think this is what we saw the past couple seasons as nic seemes to second guess whether he really wanted to continue playing every offseason. We need somebody else who still has the fire inside to take over now. Its time i think. Will be crying tomorrow for sure. But im convinced its time.
-
Agreed. I really don't get good vibes from quincey. I think it makes sense to try to salvage what picks we can for him, as we are without our own first rounder.
-
ohno
-
As sad as it is to see nick retire (likely tomorrow) it does afford us the ability to be EXTREMELY flexible and active no matter how high the cap ceiling becomes. I think Schultz is a target that Kenny has to consider as he is young, has size, nhl ready, and shoots right. Would be a great pair with Smith for many years to come. Assuming the cap rises to 69 mill. This is something that would rejuvenate our roster: CAPGEEK.COM USER GENERATED ROSTER My Custom Lineup FORWARDS Zach Parise ($7.500m) / Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) / Gustav Nyquist ($0.875m) Valtteri Filppula ($3.000m) / Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / Johan Franzen ($3.955m) Danny Cleary ($2.800m) / Justin Abdelkader ($1.000m) / Todd Bertuzzi ($2.075m) Brandon Prust ($1.250m) / Darren Helm ($1.800m) / Patrick Eaves ($1.200m) Drew Miller ($0.838m) / Jan Mursak ($0.550m) / DEFENSEMEN Niklas Kronwall ($4.750m) / Ryan Suter ($7.500m) Jonathan Ericsson ($3.250m) / Ian White ($2.875m) Brendan Smith ($0.875m) / Justin Schultz ($2.500m) Jakub Kindl ($0.883m) / GOALTENDERS Jimmy Howard ($2.250m) Josh Harding ($1.000m) ------ CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter) (these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion) SALARY CAP: $69,000,000; CAP PAYROLL: $65,508,712; BONUSES: $37,500 CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $3,491,288 I'd say this is the last year we see both Cleary and Bert on the third line and probably say goodbye to Cleary at year's end. The following season I could see Tatar taking a third line wing spot at a lower cap hit. There is plenty of space left to re-sign Fil and Jimmy next season especially if Cleary is removed. There is room to groom in the young talent like Jarnkrok, Pulks, Jurco, Sheahan on the third line over the following couple years after some time in GR.
-
I only ask because some predictions have fillip forsberg falling lower than faksa and others have him going as high as second overall. If he goes in the 9-15 range I think we could trade up potentially if kenny has the stones.
-
I'd go with the following for my blueadams line prediction 7 years from now assuming no trades and lids retires : Nyquist - To be Drafted - Jurco Filppula - Jarnkrok - Pulkkinen Tvrdon - Sheahan - Tatar Abby - Helm - Eaves Ouellet - Smith Ericsson - Sproul Backman - Jensen Almquist Funny to think that 4th line will be kinda veteran lol. But I like the idea of a veteran 4th line just cause they know when to bring the energy etc. As for that no. 1 centre, I'd look at: - Move up in the draft and nab Faksa/Girgensons/Gaunce/Herti/Osnovin/Karlsson anything better I doubt we could get. Forsberg would be perfect (6'2 right shot) but we could never move up that far imo. What would it take?
-
id take him on as a backup for jimmy. would at least be entertaining.
-
sproul, back man, jensen, almqvist could also be included in the conversation of potentials for the future. I like the frame on sproul and backman, both definitely have the "tools" to be potential dmen for the future along with smith and ouellet. tvrdon can also at least project as a 3rd line power forward. I'd love to draft that next no. 1 center this year but we don't have the pick. would be nice to maybe get a mid first for quincey and mursak/kindl or something. then draft around 15 and get something really decent. Nyquist - ?Draft this year? - ? Tatar - Jarnkrok - Jurco ? - Sheahan - Tvrdon ? - ? - ? ? - Smith Sproul - Ouellet ? - Backman Almqvist/Jensen ? Mrazek
-
The second trade would NEVER happe. Girardi is premeir and they get a fringe fourth liner and an undersized dman and a s***ty pick lol. Lucic trade prolly wouldnt happen just cause he brings grit to their team with scoring... invaluable think helm.
