I totally forgot today was the first round of the draft!! Looks like I missed a good freak-out. I really wasn't set on one player to take. I like everything I've been reading about Rasputin in the last half hour. If you watch this video, you can see why the organization likes his character. Ranked #10 by ISS Hockey Ranked #10 by McKeen's Hockey Ranked #5 by NHL Central Scouting (NA Skaters) Ranked #9 by TSN/McKenzie ...so isn't this where he was expected to be taken?? edit: oops, rich beat me to the video..

He does have an interest in the success of the oilers. First of all, he might like winning. Even just if you consider it financially. If the OIlers are champions and consistently one of the elite teams, his profile will be raised and he will be up for bigger endorsement deals. Also there's the effect of being an overpayed (or just hugely payed) player on public opinion and your legacy. I think players do care about that, maybe some more than others. You could connect that to finance as well as players public image could be thought of as building a brand to a certain extent for endorsements/post hockey life.

Maybe some Fu Manchu? Probably only the stoner hockey fans would get it. -

That article was posted 3 hours ago so you can't suggest that they've realized anything since then. There is a lot of people outside the WIngs fanbase that thought he should have been chosen. -

Most articles/ bits of coverage do seem to be pretty surprised that Mrazek was exposed/ not taken For example, Sportsnet, uses it their first example of a headscratcher move. http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/goes-brown-expansion-draft-winners-losers/ Unrelated, but in that article, they have this tweet (I don't know how to copy/paste tweets) ✔@TomGulittiNHL Foley said VGK had list of picks ready at 4 p.m. PT Tues. before realizing they had 13 forwards (need 14) so switched from a D to a forward 5:26 PM - 21 Jun 2017 Wonder if that was XO switched to Nosek last minute. -

Bryan Rust maybe. Agreed. It's kind of crazy that the Habs have lost Emelin, traded Beaulieu for a 3rd, and traded Shegachyov away all in a couple weeks. Gotta think they'll feel those losses to the D corps. Shedding 3 solid or promising D men feels like their mocking us a bit, haha. They probably should have just let Vegas choose one of Beaulieu or Emelin. A 3rd isn't much of a gain and I think retaining either player would be more valuable. -
Hossa's Career Might Be Over Already

It might be a latex allergy. I had a friend with that when I was younger. It can actually be deadly. But there's things like lycra and cotton (though that would be hot to wear playing hockey) that are fine for people with that allergy. Never heard of anyone that was allergic to the alternatives as well. Or maybe it's the plastic cups for shoulder pads etcetera? Those would be harder to replace with another material. -

Or maybe Vegas is just building for the future and generally choosing younger players. That's what I'd do in their place (though Mrazek would be my choice of young players). -

If it's true, Nosek's not a great loss. As someone else said, the expansion draft is not there to help us out. The likelihood that it would be someone we'd be happy to lose (aka Ericsson) was very small. Losing him might give Frk a shot in one of our 3 free forward spots or maybe it's Bertuzzi, if the team thinks him ready. I don't think either of those options would hurt the roster in place of having Nosek. I'd just be glad, if we get away with exposing Mrazek. -
Just please don't listen to it on the radio. I could foresee a multi-car pileup if Pettersson is chosen.

Agreed. Not that I totally believe this is a message being sent, but it could be that Holland wants Mrazek to think Vegas or trade partners around the league don't even want him. That could be a message that would bring his alleged ego down and make him more willing to get things to work in Detroit and smooth out any conflicts he might be having. -

Well, one problem is than many of these teams were paying big time for their other goalie, so they were paying for goaltending (not like the aforementioned Hasek+Ozman. And a bunch of these guys are on Entry Level deals. That's Cam Ward, Emery, Leighton, Quick at least. I agree you should draft well and take advantage of the times when you have ETCs but that's not a long term idea unless you plan on getting great goalies through the draft endlessly. If that's the strategy then you could never re-sign a goalie once they'd earned the starting position. These guys got PAID later. That was my point on listing other year of hasek and Ozzy. You can get a few cheap years due to a player being young or old, but it's never been an approach for the wings despite what people sometimes say. -

Hasek made 8 million each year 01-02 and 02-03 with us. Osgood made 3-4 million 00-04 We only had them for a low charge 07-09 because they were older in and not in demand. I don't want us signing 42 year old goalies as a strategy to win the cup (and I think Ozzy was 34). It was a special situation with Hasek and Ozzy that probably can't be replicated. -

I'll be pretty upset if we lose Mrazek. For now, I'm trusting that the organization wouldn't let that happen, though. I think a deal is very possible. The Holland quote was: “I’m not prepared to pay any future assets to protect players on our team.” For me that just excludes trades involving draft picks. That leaves the door open for an agreement where we left a different player exposed (Sheahan? XO?...) with the idea that they'd take that preferred player and leave Mrazek. P.S. I know they will take Fleury and they should, but he had a pretty bad season, other than the playoffs. I feel like the discussion of him being a knock out pick for them is exaggerated. Hell, both Howard and Mrazek have better career numbers (GAA + SV%). -

You are uninformed, sir. "After they play against him a few rushes, they see how he forces them to back off. Displays a good strong shot, very good hands and an emerging physicality. He can beat you one on one, with a shot from the perimeter, or with body work. Projects as a player who can develop into a power player." https://www.wingingitinmotown.com/2016/6/25/12029640/2016-nhl-draft-red-wings-select-mattias-elfstrom-in-the-7th-round-at Plus, he's 6'3 and 194 lbs at age 20. CSL even has Hakan calling him a powerforward so you must not have read the OP. But, yeah, he's swedish so he must be soft...

Good trade for Montreal, but It will be interesting to see how their situation on D will be in a couple years. I'm sure they're confident about re-signing Markov, but at 38 he's going to be done fairly soon and he's still playing a huge part of the team. The commentary has been that sergachev was to be his replacement. But they are - and should be - in the win now mindset with Weber and Price in their prime, so I guess that a problem to deal with down the line. I have heard that Petry has been better than they expected, so maybe he and Emelin slowly taking over Markov's minute/role.

There were only 31 players that averaged 3 shots per game this year and only 7 PPG guys. If those are the marks for success for an AHL prospect, then you will be disappointed by almost all. I would be very happy if we get 4 players of the caliber of DK, Tats, Goose, and Mraz off of this current Calder winning team. (you can throw in a Glendening too for good measure) As for the missing elite talent, we'll have to hope on some of our soon to come high picks and the continued development of Larkin, Mantha, AA, Mrazek, Svech, etc. Anyway, congrats to the Griffins. Having a strong AHL affiliate to develop guys can only be a positive. Build a winning culture and get prospects playing the system at a high level.

They'd probably be used to the people, though, since there's a mini-exodus each year of Canadians who move to Florida for the winter (mostly from eastern Canada). There's even a community about a half an hour away from the Panthers arena that's been known as Floribec.

2017 Stanley Cup Finals: Nashville Predators vs. Pittsburgh Penguins
PavelValerievichDatsyuk replied to Hockeytown0001's topic in General
But there's plenty of players that get away stuff like that. The Subban headslam is very reminiscent of Weber slamming Z's head into the boards. The league has shown, if there's no injury or if there isn't a big uproar from a team, they won't act on it. It's not a crosby conspiracy. And I don't think he was given a pass on the bottle. I guarantee by the time an official sees the bottle they can't see if it was intentionally thrown when they look at the bench. They don't have the view that camera showed - they'd be looking at the play or that attempted slash behind the play. -

It's a penalty because it's unsportsmanlike and because it could impede the game (a pass could hit the bottle) not because it's a great danger. It's rule 41(k) - the whole section is about abuse of officials, unsportsmanlike infractions. -

I think Subban's head into the ice was a big deal (maybe suspension worthy?) and the bottle should have been a penalty. It's very understandable that the refs missed it, though, since they would rarely be looking at the bench when play is far away from it. Just the idea that the bottle is dangerous is over the top. And for the record, I think the finger chop was just a freak incident of a slash that happens all the time uncalled.
