Apparently Caps didn't make a trade https://www.tsn.ca/tsn-ca-tradecentre-live-blog-1.1011165 So that might be one Green destination to count out. I think the countdown is until his meltdown rather than the deadline

Yeah, and also he already had the history of being a disappointing deadline pickup when Canadiens picked him up from the islanders so it was understandable in retrospect.

Yeah, was surprised by that too. Apparently they've lost 6 straight and maybe they're trying to shake things up rather than sell off? Bob Mackenzie says Pacioretty probably won't be traded today. He has had a down year and only 1 year left on his contract so they might move him. It does seem crazy that a team so offensively starved would trade their main offensive guy. http://montrealgazette.com/sports/hockey/nhl/hockey-inside-out/dont-expect-max-pacioretty-to-get-traded-tsns-bob-mckenzie

The Stastny trade for a 1st (conditional) and a prospect (eric foley) bodes well for Green's return, i think.

People seem to really want to read the worst out of Holland's words. The maintain the culture has always been a thing around the Wings. Doesn't mean we won't trade anyone - just they believe in vets guiding the next iteration of Wings. All that says to me is they're not trading Z and Kronwall and some other vets, but we already knew that so what's the deal? As for the "open for business next 2 years" that's showing that we're really doing a rebuild and not just patching holes to try to limp in the playoffs next year. And as others have said, potential trades like Nyquist, Helm? Tatar? etc. aren't typical deadline deals and would be done over the next couple of years.

Mrazek traded to Philly for Conditional 3rd and 4th Picks

Sure, for a Lundquist or a Quick, but Mrazek hadn't established himself as the franchise goalie without doubt.

Mrazek traded to Philly for Conditional 3rd and 4th Picks

"Mrazek was not happy the Red Wings were unable to trade Howard in the off-season and let the club know in less-than-tactful terms." http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2017/06/red_wings_left_petr_mrazek_unp.html (I trust the better source) Okay, didn't see that article. That does make Mrazek look like a bit of a diva. Especially since they were actually trying to trade Howard and were just unsuccessful.

Really just sounds like conjecture. And isn't hockeybuzz.com the website with the with the Ekland rumors that no one trusts? Seems unlikely he'd really expect that.

    Karlsson on the move?

Funny, Brutal article on the Sens: http://nationalpost.com/sports/hockey/nhl/ottawa-senators/whole-situation-there-is-f-ed-up-unimaginable-months-ago-senators-might-trade-karlsson Best line "A team that was a goal away from reaching the 2016-17 Stanley Cup final has spent the past 12 months systematically destroying everything that was once good about the roster. A toddler kicking apart a sand castle has shown more restraint." "Erik Karlsson, a defenceman so special that a year ago GM Pierre Dorion said God created him on the eighth day, could be gone in the next two days. In doing so, the Senators are in the process of robbing their fans of a two-time Norris Trophy winner who is not only regarded as the best defenceman in the NHL, but is arguably one of the top-three players, in general." Not even Judas would have been this cruel." Seems fare though. They do seem to be among the worst run teams in my opinion. Seems every worthwhile NHL player they draft is lost and they haven't been able to do much with the returns: Hossa, Zibanejad, Silfverberg, Spezza, Vermette, Havlat, Fischer, Kelly, and now Karlsson?

That's why I said in my 2nd post I'm on the fence about re-signing Green. Wish we hadn't signed Daley and then I'd be fine about re-signing Green.

To the bolded: you're the one who said he was a PP specialist on that team, not me. I just said I doubt he played that role on that team because those other guys. Without that history, you're claiming he's going to be our #1 PP guy in place of Green even though he hasn't played that role for a least 3 year, if ever. As for you're larger point at the bottom, Green is a much different defenceman and the situation of the team was different. One big factor is that we already had Green for veteran higher end potential stopgap guy. Also, Everybody around the team and on this forum had been discussing for years the need for an high level offensive puck moving D - for the crappy PP and because it would help the overall system. We'd also been talking about the need for righthanded Dmen (member Babcock said it so much it was mocked). And low and behold Green came as both those things. He was a piece we really lacked. And with him, K, and E, there were still 4 spots for guys on the younger side. When Daley signed it made 4 vets on D: E, K, Green, (5 if you count Wit) and it did take away time from XO, Jensen, (and Sproul could have taken the 7 pot or Hronek by the end of the year...) Many of the younger guys seemed to be rough this year so maybe that's not the worst thing, but it was a legitimate concern and I think it did happen. My complaint was more that it was unnecessary since he's going to be gone by the time we compete, he's not amazing (though he is good), and because we already had Green. I still wish we hadn't signed him - especially if it's true that Green wants to come back. If Daley wasn't here I'd be all in for that, but I'm on the fence now. We will feel Green's absence, though, if he goes. There is a way of hipocrisy for those that want to re-sign Green, though: if people were concerned about Daley pushing out young guys, Sproul was already pushed out and there's a lot of talk of XO being traded (and probably not many want to keep him around) so we don't really need a place for young guys like last year. I'm not really sure which young D men are on deck to make it next year. Hronek, Hicketts are in their 1st and 2nd AHL years respectively, so they seem unlikely. All of Jensen, XO, Sproul were at the end of their entry deals, so it was different.

That's a bit of a stretch. Good solid player, but definitely a tier below Green. Green plays almost 2 minutes more a game (22:16 vs 20:33). That's not "almost the same minutes" Green has 29 pts and 13 PPP while Daley has 9 pts. and 0 PPP Green (2:26) and Kronwall (2:16) are really the only D men getting PP time. Kronwall would probably take Green's spot if Green's not back. Daley is 3rd for Dmen with PP ATOI :30 so maybe he takes the 2nd PP group. https://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/DET/2018.html And as for him being a PP specialist with PIT, last year he was behind Schultz, Letang, and Ian Cole in pts. And he was behind Letang, Schultz, and Mark Streit for PP ATOI so that doesn't sound like it. https://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/PIT/2017.html

Mrazek traded to Philly for Conditional 3rd and 4th Picks

Never heard of that anywhere. Please provide a link if you have it. I'd be interested. If anything, Bedard would have being more likely the one trying to change his style. Bedard helped Howard and Ozzy's more safe positioning style. Bedard was let go just as Mrazek was named the starter. All the discussion I saw was that Mrazek was close with Salajko and this hiring was a further commitment to Mrazek. There were articles to this effect at the time: Title: New Goalie coach Jeff Salajko has bond with Petr Mrazek https://www.freep.com/story/sports/nhl/red-wings/2016/05/21/detroit-red-wings-goaltender-coach-jeff-salajko-petr-mrazek/84714326/ “Petr and I clicked right away,” Salajko said. “I enjoy coaching him.” And he makes direct comments to contradict you saying he was trying to change Mrazek: “It’s really not reinventing Petr’s game — it’s more of a fine tuning. Petr makes a lot of highlight reel saves.” https://www.therecord.com/sports-story/6693155-kitchener-native-salajko-joins-red-wings-as-goalie-coach/ "One of my strengths has been my relationship with the guys and the trust," he said.

Uh, we traded Jurco, Ott, Smith, all for good return or more than what was expected. Vanek was a little disappointing, but expectation went a little crazy around here.

Red Wings sign D Trevor Daley to 3 year, 3.166m/yr contract, includes NTC/Modified NTC.

Witkowski is the 8th defenseman and has played there mostly though he does play forward also sometimes. But, anyway, even without considering him, we've iced 7 for long stretches K,DD,Green, J, E, XO, Daley. It's why XO barely played on many nights, Sproul could have been a roster player (mostly scratch if he didn't cut it). I think the signing was made because Kronwall's status was uncertain. With K staying healthy and improved, I think it proved unecessary, though Daley has been solid.

No one wants to be traded so they're trying not to impress the predators?

We currently have 8 d on the team plus we had Sproul at the beginning of the year so we would have had 7 without signing Wit or Daley. We didn't need Daley him just to fill out the roster. He was signed as upgrade.

Yeah, Green's been out a least one game already. Saw it discribed as a "neck injury" which is different, but they say it won't keep him out long so hopefully it doesn't hurt his trade value. Go Wings!!! (and Flyers!)

Mrazek traded to Philly for Conditional 3rd and 4th Picks

Well, this did seem likely to happen. Would have preferred to keep him and see if he continued his resurgence, but I do think it was unlikely that we were going to qualify him, so if that was the decision then I do think they took advantage of probably the only opportunity get a return for him. The goalie market and Mrazek's value did seem to be weak and it took the duo injuries to even get that much. A 4th ain't much, but I think that'll be a 3rd since I think he'll win 5 games and they'll make the playoffs. But they'll probably play the Pens in the 1st round so I don't think it'll turn into a 2nd. And, I doubt they re-sign him with their duo so I'm betting it's just a 3rd, which is an okayish return. So, who do we call up? Coreau? - that would help our draft odds, haha (edit: apparently he was just named the AHL player of the week, though)

    2/18 GDT - Maple Leafs @ Red Wings - 7:00 PM EST

Agreed. He used to leave people behind more often. Maybe it's also a bit that the rest of the league has gotten faster in his 8 or 9 years in the league

Castaway (How former Wings are doing)

I always like tracking how players do elsewhere after they're shipped away. Was inspired by someone's comment about Quincey in another thread. I hadn't checked up on him in a while until I was reminded by that post. Apparently he was waived back in November. Thought he was better than that when he left here. Must have taken a turn for the worse. Looks like he hasn't played in the AHL so I wonder if he's working out a deal overseas? Or i injured? Or calling it a career at 32? And that makes all of Jurco, Q, Tootoo waived this year. Also WILSON!!!! (the Inspiration for the title) has 2 pts in his 14 games with Buffalo for a grand total of 2 pts for the whole year with the 3 teams. And....Sheahan has 14 pts with Pens - 1 less than our $5.25 million Nielson and more than Helm. Seems to be back at the production of previous years in the new environment. Good for him, but still think it was good to trade him since we had no spot for him at center. He has a great FO% with 56.84 so maybe they put him back at center and that must be where he's comfortable. It always seemed to me that he fell off when we switched him to wing.

    2/18 GDT - Maple Leafs @ Red Wings - 7:00 PM EST

Yeah, sort of understandable - but there is some absurdity in it. I think there's a fine balance in there somewhere: you never want a group of players who are just lay down and be fine with losing. I think these games are as much about young guys development (Larkin, AA, Mantha, etc) as much as getting a good draft position. We're 7th from the bottom. That would give us a chance at a very good player. Where you're going to fall in the picks is dependant increasingly on the lottery since the odds are more even now. We finished 6th from the bottom last year and end up with the 9th pick. Dallas, who were 7th last year (our current spot) ended up with the 3rd overall pick. Philly got the 2nd overall, but finished 12th from the bottom. And, in fact, none of the bottom 3 teams last year even picked in the top 3 spots. I'm just rooting for the guys and hope to see good signs and development for the future. Trading Green - and maybe others - will likely lead to a sinking in the standings and better draft odds, as well as that inevitable effect it has on players once playoffs are completely out of the picture.
