Official 2016 Detroit Red Wings Offseason Thread

Jurco would definitely benefit from a trade, but the problem is, the Wings would not. Jurco's value is at an all time low, and what we could possibly get for him, is not even close to worth what we would lose in potential. I think that because he's been around for a few years, people think he should have already reached his potential, but in reality he is still very young, and should only now start to make strides toward that potential. Like marcaractac mentioned, players develop at different rates. Nyquist and Tatar are 2-3 years older than Jurco, and neither were impact players in the NHL until they were 23(ish), which is exactly how old Jurco is going into this season. Jurco will be a good secondary scorer, and it would be a huge mistake to trade him at this point, especially in a deal just to get rid of Datsyuk's contract...

You don't trade a player like Nyquist because you're trying to relieve cap space, you only trade him if it's in a package to upgrade your roster. Nyquist is a very good player on a very cap friendly contract. He has value in a trade package, and that's not the type of player(s) we need to dump... I believe Ericsson could be traded if Holland were actively shopping him, the problem is, I don't believe Holland wants to trade him. There are always GM's around the league that will go after a player because of size. Roy, for example is looking to trade Barrie because he doesn't value small, puck moving defensemen, but would instead rather big, defensive defensemen. I'm not saying Colorado would want Ericsson, but there's definitely a team out there that would trade for him, even if it involves us eating $1-1.5M...

If we can trade Datsyuk's contract for a mid to late round draft pick, awesome. If we have to throw in a middling prospect, that's fine too. But if we have to give up a player like Jurco or better, I hope we just keep Pav's contract for the final year... The only way I'd be okay with giving up a player of any significance to trade that contract would be if that $5.5M is the only thing stopping us from signing a big name free agent. If the only thing Holland is focusing on is trading that contract, and he's not in on any big name free agents or trade targets, I say we should suck it up and eat the contract, rather than losing a valuable asset for nothing... As I've said before, we're not contending next year without at least one big name acquisition, so there's absolutely no need to trade that contract if we're not planning on using that cap space for any big moves. I'm hoping Holland gets very aggressive and makes some bold moves this summer, but no matter what he does, I can't imagine it being enough to make us legit Cup contenders next season... Summer check list (in order of importance)... - Trade for a top pairing defenseman (Trouba) - Trade Howard - Trade Ericsson - Trade Datsyuk's contract - Sign a top end forward (Stamkos / Okposo) If he's only able to pull off one of those (unless it's number 1), I see it as a major failure. If he can pull off 3 out of 5, I see it as a successful offseason. If he's able to somehow pull off all 5, I see us as being legit Cup contenders...

Official 2016 Detroit Red Wings Offseason Thread

Haha kickazz, who the hell says player x "puts up numbers"? Puts up points? Yes. Is a point producer? Yes. Puts up numbers? Sounds dumb to me... Datsyuk's numbers have been steadily declining the past few years. Athanasiou put up decent numbers for a rookie. Glendening's numbers are s***. You know what all of these players have in common? They all play hockey and they all put up "numbers", just at varying rates... Anyway, this argument is dumb, we just have different opinions on the terminology. We agree that Shattenkirk puts up solid points from the back end, we agree that he would be a good addition, we just disagree on his value. I think he is a very good defenseman, I just think he's being overrated. But then again, what player doesn't get overrated when they're rumored to be moved? Maybe I'm over rating Trouba too, but Trouba is a player I'd overpay for, Shattenkirk, not so much...

Yes. Literally every player puts up "numbers". How many numbers a player puts up determines whether or not they are considered a "point producer"... Shattenkirk will be at $4.25M for one more season, then he's a UFA after next season. Because he is somewhat overrated league wide, you can be guaranteed he will get $6M+. Like I said, I'd love to have Shattenkirk, but I wouldn't drastically overpay to get him. I agree though that he'd be a really good fit for Blashill's system.

So there are no players in the league that "put up numbers" (literally every player in the league puts up numbers), that are not overrated? Shattenkirk not only puts up numbers, he's a pretty productive player, but I still consider him overrated... I would take him on our team in a heartbeat, but I wouldn't drastically overpay for him, which is probably what it's going to take...

    IIHF World Championships

Red Wings players in tournament... Finland - Teemu Pulkkinen #56 Russia - Pavel Datsyuk #13 / Alexey Marchenko #53 Slovakia - Tomas Jurco #13 Sweden - Gustav Nyquist #14 USA - Dylan Larkin #21 SWE 2 vs. LAT 1 (OT) Nyquist scored the game winner in overtime on a beautiful pick pocket in the offensive zone to give himself and Wennberg a 2-on-0, converting on the give-and-go. He also had 5 shots on goal and lead his team in time on ice (22:21). USA 1 vs. CAN 5 Larkin was held of the score sheet but had 5 shots on goal and lead all forwards in time on ice (19:55). CZE 3 vs RUS 0 Disappointing start to the tournament for the host team in a shutout loss. Datsyuk had 2 shots on goal. FIN 6 vs. BLR 2 Pulkkinen had an assist and 2 shots on goal in 14:01 time on ice. Non Red Wings related... Laine is a f***ing stud. I wouldn't be shocked if he's one of the best players in the tournament and THE best player in next year's draft class, including Matthews. He had 2 goals and an assist and 4 shots on goal in 13:31 time on ice. SVK 4 vs. HUN 1 Jurco had a goal and an assist and 4 shots on goal in 14:17 time on ice. His goal ended up being the game winner on a nice tip in front of the net. He also had a beautiful assist on a spin move behind the net, to find Sekera wide open in front for an easy tap-in.

The Holiday tradition: 2016 Draft thoughts.....

The only way I want to move down in the draft this year is if all the guys we're eying in the mid round have already been taken, or if there's still a couple left and a team like Philadelphia calls us asking to trade our 16th for their 18th and 48th or 52nd...

The Holiday tradition: 2016 Draft thoughts.....

I'm as high on Athanasiou as anyone, but I still wouldn't say he's a lock to become the top 6 center we hope he will be. And while Svechnikov has played some center with Cape Breton, he has predominantly played wing just about everywhere else, including Red Wings training camp. I'd like to see what he can do as a 2nd or 3rd line center in Grand Rapids next season though. I'm usually open to the idea of trading back to get an extra pick, but if any of the big names drop to 16 (Bean, McLeod, Jones), I hope we take one of them. I don't know a whole lot about Carlsson, but isn't he expected to go beyond the 3rd round? I'm still hoping we can get one of Johansen or Day with our 2nd rounder. The only bit of hockey I've seen of Henrik Samuelsson is a couple years ago in the Memorial Cup against Mantha and Bertuzzi. He was a beast. Samuelsson and Lazar were by far the Oil Kings two best players. He did have a rough season last year, but I highly doubt Arizona are looking to move him, and I'm pretty sure he's been moved to the wing as well.

    Fixing this mess....

No, Gudbranson HAD high potential but I don't think he will ever be anything close to a top pair defenseman. Florida won that trade in my opinion.

Tomas Nosek signs a 2 year extension

Good signing, but I don't see him making the Wings next season. Maybe the following season if he continues to progress...

The Holiday tradition: 2016 Draft thoughts.....

Not at all, I'm not sure where you got that. Are you thinking of Max Jones? He's the only guy projected to go in the mid first that I would somewhat compare to a Bertuzzi type player... McLeod has a ton of speed and skill. His game reminds me a lot of Dylan Strome, who went 3rd overall to Arizona last year. He hasn't put up close to the same numbers offensively but I think he will be a legit number 2 center. As much as I love Athanasiou, I don't think he's an absolute lock to be a legit top 6 center. Maybe he ends up being a top 6 winger or 3rd line center. Of course McLeod isn't a lock either, but having two high end center prospects capable of filling the number 2 center position of the future, is certainly better than one. I really like what I see in McLeod and I would love for him to drop to us, but I would be just as happy if we were able to land a guy like Bean.

Wings acquire SJ prospect Dylan Sadowy

He can still play in junior next season as an overage, 20 year old, as long as the Colts aren't to their limit. Each team in the OHL is eligible to carry three overage players each season. It's up to management and what they think is best for his development. I'm thinking you're right though and he makes the jump to pro and plays next season in Grand Rapids.

The Holiday tradition: 2016 Draft thoughts.....

The more I read and watch scouting reports on the upcoming draft class, the more I'm leaning toward Michael McLeod. I think he will likely be gone when we get to the podium at 16, but if he's there, he's probably my top pick. As much as we need defense, I just think he may be that much better than any of the other guys that would be available. I'd be quite happy with either McLeod or Bean, hopefully one of them is still there at 16. Larkin and McLeod as our one-two punch down the middle, could be very good in a few years... Draft McLeod and trade for Trouba are the two things on my summer wish list...

Wings acquire SJ prospect Dylan Sadowy

I agree with sputman, in that we likely had our eye on him a couple years ago, and planned on taking him in the 4th round until San Jose snagged him in the 3rd. I see him developing into another Bertuzzi type player, which can't be a bad thing. I see him as a bottom 6 agitator at the NHL level, that can also put up a few points. He's not afraid to drop the mitts, or go to the hard areas of the ice, and scores a lot of his goals in the periphery of the crease. I'm guessing he will play one more season in the OHL before he makes the jump to the AHL the following season?... It's a bit of an odd trade for Holland to make, but I like it. I just hope this isn't his idea of being aggressive in the offseason...

    16/17 offseason

Although I don't think we should, we likely will use Zetterberg as our number one center again. And if that's the case, there's absolutely no way we should re-sign Richards or any other UFA center this summer, unless his name is Stamkos. Determining what is best for the team this coming season as well as future seasons, there's no question Larkin should be our number two center going forward. A 20 year old Larkin is much better than a 36 year old Richards. What Larkin may lose in the face-off circle, he more than makes up for in virtually every other area of the game. Who gives a s*** if he loses one more faceoff in a game if he provides more everywhere else?... Just shelter his faceoffs outside the defensive zone. Which player would you rather have as your number two center? Player A: 49.6% FO% / -7 GvA:TkA / 0.41 Pts/G / 2.4 S/G / 0.2 Hits/G / 0.2 Bks/G / 307 iCorsi Player B: 41.0% FO% / +4 GvA:TkA / 0.56 Pts/G / 2.8 S/G / 0.8 Hts/G / 0.3 Bks/G / 390 iCorsi I don't think there's any way Larkin's faceoff percentage doesn't improve, along with every other area of his game, while Richards will likely regress in most areas. Basing who we use as our centers next season only on faceoff percentage is short-sighted. There are so many other factors to consider, and Larkin has the edge in every one of them...

    16/17 offseason

I agree, 41% for the top two centers would be atrocious, but you can be guaranteed that both will improve on those numbers next season. I think both would reach 45-50% easily, and although that would still be below average - average, that certainly would not necessitate a full on rebuild... We are in the midst of a "rebuild", the only difference is we're not trying to tank. In the situation we're currently in, transitioning from the Datsyuk, Zetterberg era to the Larkin, Athanasiou, Mantha era, putting our future top center in the the middle is the best for the team going forward. Ideally we'd land a number one center via trade or free agency, and Larkin would be our number two, Athanasiou / Sheahan would be number three and Glendening would be four... However if Holland isn't able to land a true a number one center, I'd rather go with the kids than re-sign Richards or sign a Staal... These guys are barely top 6 centers and definitely aren't number one's anymore. Anyway, difference of opinion, I'm not saying you're wrong, hell you may be more "right" than me, since what you're advocating is probably what Holland ends up doing, but I just don't agree with it. Enough with the stop-gaps, we should be going with the kids...

    16/17 offseason

I love Abdelkader and think he's a very good winger, well worth his cap hit, just a year or two longer than I would have liked his contract to be. But like I said, a very good "winger". He's not a center and although I wouldn't hate it if he were tried again as a bottom 6 center, he will never be a top 6 center. And we already have Sheahan, Athanasiou, Glendening and (hopefully) Helm that can all play bottom 6 center, so why would we try to convert Abby into that position? I'm not sure why you're trying to compare Abdelkader with Nyquist and Tatar and talking about turnovers... But Abby commits more turnovers and has a worse takeaway vs giveaway ratio than both... Nyquist has no defensive awareness? Haha okay... I find it hilarious how you're still saying that guys like Nyquist, Tatar and Green are untradeable / have no value... All three of these guys would be great trading chips with just about any team... Anyway, this conversation is pointless. We clearly have completely different views of this team. Whatever...

The Holiday tradition: 2016 Draft thoughts.....

Rubtsov looks like a decent player, but to say he's a definite top 10 talent and his talent level is on par with Larkin is a bit of a stretch in my opinion. There's a reason he looks good and has decent numbers, and it's because he's playing in a fairly weak league. Not many players are drafted from the MHL and there has never (to my knowledge) been a player selected from the MHL in the first round (exception being goaltender Vasilevskiy). You can say it's the "Russian factor", but I don't think that really exists anymore. Sure, there are still some kids that won't want to come to North America, but for most of them, especially top talents, their dream is to make the NHL. Any team drafting around the 20 range that have any interest in the kid, will have plenty of conversations with him leading up to the draft. They will have a good idea whether or not he wants to come over (he likely does), which eliminates the risk of drafting any Russian players... Regardless, I think it would be an awful decision to take him if any of a handful of other players are still on the board...
  24. krsmith17

    16/17 offseason

Like I said, I don't necessarily think that having Larkin, Athanasiou, Sheahan, Glendening down the middle would result in success next season, but I do think it would be the best thing for their development. And developing is exactly what we should be doing for the next season or two. We are not contending in that time, so we need to put our kids in the best position to get them where we need them to be going forward. Having our top two natural centers playing wing, and signing old / washed up, has-been's like Richards or Staal is a terrible decision in my opinion. Of course if we can sign Stamkos and have Larkin play second line center, Athanasiou / Sheahan play 3rd line center, that would be ideal, but I don't see us landing Stamkos... In saying all that, I would be shocked if those 4 were our centers going into next season. Like PVD said, Zetterberg will likely still be our number one center, although I think that's an awful decision. Zetterberg needs his ice time cut down to 15ish minutes a night, so we can still get the best out of him. If he continues to get 20ish minutes a night, he will be a ghost by mid season. Either way, I just hope we don't see Larkin on his wing again. He needs to center his own line, ideally the second line...
  25. krsmith17

The Holiday tradition: 2016 Draft thoughts.....

It's not like I know a whole lot about most of these kids right now, let alone what kind of players they will be in the future, but if we made that selection on June 24th, I'd be a bit pissed off. Especially if any of the 4 or 5 names I'd like us to draft are still on the board. But again, I obviously don't know near as much as our scouts, so whatever...
