I would love to get a player like Chchyrun, but I'm very nervous is taking a D-man that high. Most of the top end D come from mid round picks. Hopefully he falls in the Doughty/Ekblad category and not the Luke Schenn, Zack Bogosian, Tyler Myers category. We need a 1A type of player. *edit* After re-reading my post it sounds like I am implying that we are going to get Chchyrun. I dont think that, I am talking in hypothetical's.

I hope we can move his contract, but if it requires us giving up good assets, then screw it. We are not going to win the cup next year, so why sacrifice the future for cap relief for 1 year. If we are in a situation where its either sign Stamkos AND give us assets, or keep the caphit and not get Stamkos, then sure I would do it. But if its a situation where its trading his contract to get cap space, then getting more Qunicey's and Richards, I would rather not lose the future assets unless we are talking a 7th round pick or something pretty insignificant (ie. a very low-end prospect).

Babs is a great coach, probably top 3 in the NHL, but lets not kid ourselves the guy has always had pretty good rosters or a super hot goalie (giggy). Even the last few years on Detroit, while obviously they weren't championship contending teams they weren't garbage. Blashill came in and pretty much did the same job Babs minus 7 points and that was with the big 3 going through a giant decline as a collective unit this year (but I guess you could argue that was offset by AA Larkin). If Babs could blood from a stone, the Leafs would not have been dead last this year. Please don't mistaken this as an anti Babs post, I am a huge fan of Babs and was super bummed when he left. I would take him back in a heartbeat. But, I don't think he is a god among coaches like some make him out to be. I agree with your last statement though, if the stars align they could be a very good team. But alot of things need to go right.

As far as I can remember, this has always been the story. Anyone who says its because it was his hometown are just misinformed.

I find it funny that people are automatically assuming that TO has tuned it around. Have people not seen the Oilers? They appear to be going down the right path, but they still have a long long road to go.
-
Ok, that makes sense then. Ya, LC is all over the place at Joe.
-
Have you been to a Wings game lately? Little Ceasers is all over the place. From people coming through the stands during commercials and throwing pizza into the stands, from signs, marketing etc. Being associated with LC is nothing new.

If the founder wasn't the Wings owner, I would agree with you. It may be "a joke" to some today, but people will get over it as time passes.
-
They are no different than 5 of the other original 6 teams. Chicago: United Centre (airline) Montreal: Bell Centre (Phone) Boston: TD Garden (Bank) Toronto: ACC (airline) I'm sorry but this post as well as so many others are a complete overreaction. Do I like the name, no, but its really not a big deal. At least its named after a corporation that our owner founded.

If your just going to make stats up, I'm not even going to bother debating with you on this anymore. As far as Sharp goes, there are a lot of issues with your assessment, but they are irrelevant anyways based on your point. Your actual point of Holland moving some contracts, that I dont even disagree with you on. I would love us to be able to move E and Howard, but not everyone over 30 like some want the Wings to do.
-
Why are you changing the numbers? You did the same thing when talk about Patrick Sharps stats. You just make-up/change things to suit your argument. It's 6'1, 201, not 6'1 205. I will say again, with margin of error, Helm is the mean. I do agree that size does not mean everything (I wouldn't say it means nothing, it definitely helps). I would still rather have Helm then Martin if the $ is the same. But I think Helm will want about 3mil per, for about 4-5 years which I dont want the Wings dishing out.

Excellent post. Parity is as strong as I can ever remember. Just look at the first round, everyone was pretty ready crown either LA, Chicago, Anaheim, or Washington the champs before the playoffs started and after 1 round 3 of those 4 teams are gone. It's just a different NHL now a days. Also, why is this thread even here? A link to a random/ridicoulas article about how Holland is sabotaging this team can go into one of the other million Holland sucks threads on this board.

Agreed, I wasn't implying you meant average player. The entire context of our debate was about size, I thought that was implied. I completely agree with what Son of a Wing said, if you are saying that everybody lies about size, then the averages fall, and Helm likely is in the same place that he is in with the "fabricated" stats. Bottom line, Helm is an average sized player pretty much to the inch and pound.
-
You said Helm is a below average player, and you were using said argument in an attempt to sell the point he is too small to play on the 4th line. When the average height is 73.1 inches, and he is listed at 72 inches, and when average weight is 201 pounds and he is 196 pounds, when you take in margin of error that's the same thing. Statistically speaking, Helm is not "below average", helm pretty much is the mean. If you are going to argue conspiracy in that the Wings are tampering with height stats, I'm not even going to argue that.
-
Hey...its not a good arena, its not a bad arena, its THE ARENA. I think they would lol.
-
Wrong on both accounts. Helm is 6 feet tall, 196 pounds https://www.nhl.com/player/darren-helm-8471794 According to hockey graphs, the average NHL player in 2015 was just over 6 feet tall (73.1 inches) and 201.2 pounds. https://hockey-graphs.com/2015/02/19/nhl-player-size-from-1917-18-to-2014-15-a-brief-look/

Of all the corporate names that it could have been, thats probably the one I'm ok with considering. I would rather it be the Mike Illitch Arena or someone else in Wings history, but I'll take it.
-
Agreed. That was probably the most disappointing loss I have ever experienced as a fan. I can still remember standing there in the Joe with arrogant Pittsburgh fans all around me.
-
You're obsessed with the Abby contract, get over it. I do agree about Helm though, if he wants anything over 3mil per, we need to let him walk.
-
I dont doubt that at all, the guy probably had it coming. I'm just surprised Boyle broke.
-
When he told him to get the F out.
-
Wow! He may be completely right, and the reporter may be a complete jerk, but when you are a professional you can't speak to the media that way. Just makes you come off as immature and ridicoulas.
-
You hit the nail on the head, they made the right move at the time. Plus it didn't matter who was the GM of this team was, this team was headed for an inevitable decline at some point. it's a part of the cyclical nature of hockey. How we escaped it for 17 years is a testament to how good of a job Holland and company did with this team. Whoever the GM was when this time came was going to get blasted by fans. Had Yzerman been appointed GM and the team declined under his watch, people would be saying "we had the best GM in hockey, and we let him go for a guy who has proven nothing as a GM, so sad"
-
This is pure speculation, but I assume he is referring to when he was put on the 4th line? Implying he should always be playing top 6 minutes, and wants to put himself in a position for next year where he is always playing top 6 minutes?
-
Why is this a story today? This has been common knowledge for years now.
