Percent chance of Playoffs or Potential High Pick
kliq replied to AtlantaHotWings's topic in General
I dont think its because of the streak, the streak seems to have unfortunately become a scapegoat around here. IMO Mike Illitch is someone who believes that every year you ice the best team possible. It was this line of thinking that led to our last 4 Cups. The issue is that in the cap world, things are more complicated, and I don't believe for a second that Illitch would allow for a total tear down of the organization, streak or no streak. Dont fool yourself into thinking that if we miss the playoffs this year, next year we are tanking. Or if Holland is fired, next year we are tanking. Its that old school philosophy of fighting until the absolute last second and giving it everything you got. Detroit has always been a team that has been built on low end picks, UFA signings, and trades (well years ago), since the dead wings we have never been a team that has built its self on sinking to the bottom. I am not agreeing or disagreeing with this philosophy, but based on the way the Wings and Tigers are run, I feel its pretty clear. I would rather have an owner who thinks like this, then an owner who only cares about making money. -
So for all those complaining that we should have gotten a 7th rounder in return, no team wanted him for nothing which I hope proves that no mistake was made on managements end.
-
Ya...point is completely lost. You do realize that using examples like Chara and Lundqvist help my point in that you dont need to tank to be a contender.....right?
-
I have definitely found that with my family.
-
I should actually look into this. My entire family is Slovak, so getting a translation shouldn't be too hard lol. The one potential issue though is that even within Slovakia, there are different dialects so it's not 100% going to work.
-
The issue is the translation.
-
You're right, it's pointless.
-
What norris caliber player did they manage to trade for? They signed Chara as a UFA. So now Seguin is the reason they won the cup, clearly you didn't watch the games. Either way you are missing the point.
-
So with your logic, the ONLY way to win a cup is by following the Chicago/LA model. My original point was that if you want to build your team up to be a contender, there are multiple ways to do it. I used Boston, SJ, and the NYR as examples of teams that became contenders and stayed contenders for years by not tanking. The fact that 1 won a cup and 2 lost in the finals is irrelevant. But if you want to argue semantics, go for it.
-
No they havent, but they have been contenders for years now, and both have been to the finals. You can't dismiss their approach simply because they didnt win the cup. The point is that tanking isnt the only way.
-
Agreed, also the waiver wire at least gives him a shot at keeping Miller in case we have injuries later. Trading him for a 7th means he is officially gone, though I dont think Kenny was getting any offers anyways.

The streak being important or not depends on who's perspective you are looking at it through. If you look at it through Dickie's perspective, clearly he couldn't care less, if you are looking at it through Mike Ilitch's perspective, I believe its very important. If you ask the DRW marketing team, I think they would tell you it is very very important. I agree with CRL that the tanking community will make you believe that the only way to become a contender is to end the streak, however I do not believe that to be the case. NYR, SJ, Boston etc. have show that you don't need to "scorch earth" to become a contender again. With that being said, if the Wings dont make it and get a top 5 pick I wont be pissed. But if they dont make it and get the 14th pick in instead of the 15th pick in a weak draft class, that would completely suck.
-
lol....never going to happen. Not even a cup win in 2008 could accomplish that.
-
Welcome to the world of Ken Holland. A player is only as valuable as the market dictates. Its all about leverage and right now the Wings dont have much. Right now Howard gets us nothing special, if the day before the deadline two contenders lose their starting goalie, completely different story. Also, in today's NHL big trades don't really happen. The day Subban and Hall were moved was an outlier.

I dont have any major issues with Smith, but unfortunately with our current situation of having so many vets under contract, I think we need to let him walk, or trade him. Now, if we could rid ourselves of Kronwall and E there is a good chance I may change my tune, but unfortunately that is not happening and we cant have Kronwall, E, and Smith in our top 6 with DD/Green already taking 2 spots and guys like XO, Sproul, Russo, etc in the system especially if we plan on adding a Trouba or Fowler. Vegas.....please please please take E! I know it wont happen, but to clear a spot on D, and to add that much cap space would be huge!

My guess is that is it is likely based on his performance in the AHL when he helped the Griffins with a Calder Cup, his entire first year on the Wings in 2014/15 season, his first half of the 2015/16 season , his performance in the playoffs, and his obvious athleticism. There is no doubt that Mrazek has sucked since his birthday last year, and I am not about to hand him the job like some others. But, based on what he has shown in his first 3-4 years in the Wings organization, many including myself still see the potential. I guess its easier to just say he sucks though huh.
-
Hopefully Sproul becomes that guy and they become an extremely solid #3/#4.
-
Ya that's true, but if the right teams are picked, in some way it essentially becomes one.
-
Well we have Helm, Howard, Kronwall, and Smith coming back......I could see them sending down Coreau as no need to roll with 3 goalies, and hopefully Ott, and Miller. I could also see Smith being traded, even if Holland is not looking to sell.
-
I really dont think Howard will be bought out. I would rather stick it out for two more years then have a cap hit for 4. Lefty, havent you been saying that Howard is done with us for about 3 years now lol? At the end of the day, none of us know. If the right team at the right time is looking for a goalie and Howard wants to go, sure it will probably happen. If the timing is not right, he's likely here for at least the next 2 years.
-
I may be wrong, but since he cleared waivers at the beginning of the season, isn't he exempt from waivers for the rest of this season?
-
Yes because that is what I am saying. But please keep at it with your constructive quips.
-
I dont know much about this HOF. Does their NHL career have an relevance? Or is this purely based on international play?
-
Well, the 8 games are now over and we went 4-3-1.......not exactly crushed. lol.....ok. Son of a Wing - 1, Troll - 0.
-
Damn what a game! Nice to see this team keep fighting even after being down 4-1. Got to give Blashill credit for keeping the buys motivated.
