Great research Dickie, thanks for doing it. And I agree, the Red Wings weren't as good in drafting as we all thought. Or to be more specific: We weren't good in drafting superstars, especially defenseman. And while I agree Echolalia that the data posted by Dickie isn't enough to prove this other data is. And that is the fact that other teams found those kind of players in the draft. Sure, some had higher draft picks than we did but especially defenseman are usually drafted with later picks. As I said before, maybe it's that the Wings just were unlucky in the past decade but if I were Holland I would take a closer look at my scouting system.

Who is to blame? LGW.com and especially DickieDunn, because they didn't point out enough how Helm and Abdelkaders contracts suck, Holland is a moron, Jimmy is average, Franzen floats etc. On a more serious note: Hard to say at this point. Scouting plays a role, that we didn't pick very high during the streak, some probably overblown contracts (=Holland) and Blashill so far doesn't look like he is an NHL coach. All in all the situation is far too complex to find the one answer that fits behind a tickbox.

I'm with kliq here. I blame much of our problems on system and coaching. Far to defensive, far to cautious. They are forced to play the defensive first, work and grind style for years know and it shows. Columbus is a great example. Just take a look what Tortorella did with them. They are playing a highly effective, high risk fast playing style and are successful with it. Torts of all coaches! I always regarded Blash a much more competent coach but right now I'm not so sure.

Judging defensive prospects before they even hit their 20s is like predicting lottery numbers. Maybe fun, but not a lot of meat to either of those. To judge if Kenny was right with his trade we will have to wait 4 years or so.

Can't complain about the result if your defense leaves the opponents superstars unguarded and alone before the net. I blame our swarm defense and therefore Blashill for it. It might have been a decent experiment worth to try out but it is time to pull the plug on it. It's a shame that we waste our good goalie performances like this. On a more positive note: What a great debut by Coreau, really happy for him. The goals were not on him and he made at least two brilliant saves. We have 3 more than decent goalies, that makes it much more easy to trade away Howard if the right opportunity arises.

I don't care if he uses his size and frame. I only care if he's effective. JVR is an effective player and if we can grab him for a reasonable price with a realistic chance to resign him I'd do it. I just don't see how we can work that out atm.
