Or let him walk? Why must everyone be kept? Can we just move on from players and try to make the team better and focus on more important things? Like clearing some cap space and unloading bad contracts, drafting good players and making some meaningful trades. Smith would be an idiot to want a short term contract.. He's 28. If he signs a 3 year deal he'll be 31. Who would offer him another good contract when he's 31? Nobody. He's better off signing a longer term somewhere else and be guaranteed to play in the NHL till he's 34 or something. But then again, Smith is a bonehead so I can see him being suckered in for a 2 year deal or something. 2 years (or even 3) $3 million per would be a win for Holland and a loss for Smith. Absolutely no future job security and easily a waivable contract.

I agree with this. Trouba I guess TECHNICALLY is overrated AS OF NOW. But he's also pretty damn young compared to Fowler, Barrie. But he could end up surpassing them when he's their age (25 years old and entering prime).

Both Grimson and Downey were the record holders. Sheahan just broke it this weekend. -

Riley Sheahan now has the franchise record for going 57+ games without a goal by a forward. Cool stat bro. You're terrible. -
If you had to pick one for a playoff cup run, who would you pick? And why? Can't say "neither". You're stuck with picking one of them.

Got em!

Wonder if Green could get us a first rounder too. Man can you imagine having three 1st round picks this season? And then taking the two low 1st rounders and trading up for 1 high pick... Dammm! Get it done Kenny. Oh wait that's me. I'M GONNA GET IT DONE.
-
They lost me when they tried to justify why Sheahan will be protected over AA. Clearly they don't watch Red Wings hockey or have been paying attention to stats.
-
If Stone is worth a 3rd pick then Vanek is for sure worth a 1st round pick.

I am not. The person below me is a fan of Donald Duck

Actually, they've gotten slightly better about his usage. He plays around 13.5 minutes a game this season. Down from 14.5 minutes a game last season. I'd like that to be tracked down to around 11-12 and I wouldn't have any more issues about his usage. Furthermore if they're going to use him in critical situations such as 1 minute left in the game with a 1 goal lead and the opposing teams goalie pulled; to me it's not a big deal as long as a top 6 guy is on ice to support his lack of offense (someone like Nielsen or Zetterberg or better yet someone speedy like AA). The biggest issue last year was when they'd use Glendening for those situations along with Miller which ended up causing a lot of game-tying goals. Go figure.

Lol, way too lazy and uninteresting even for me. (someone who always posts s*** up)

It was when Bertuzzi was playing and Helm got injured
-
No I think I'm wrong. Glendening still has a higher faceoff taken rate.
-
Comparing to other teams we have but comparing to previous era it's really less. It's about half. The highest team used to have around 80+ fights a year now it's usually around 40 a year. In the 90s it was around 140+ fights a year.
-
Ott played center this season for quite a few games. We just happen to have a lot of 4th line centers between Sheahan, Ott and Glendening. http://www.freep.com/story/sports/nhl/red-wings/2016/11/17/detroit-red-wings-steve-ott/94028020/

Btw I didn't say age was a limiting factor. You can pick younger Ott vs. Glendening for your argument. The question is simply which player you would rather have in a cup run.
-
I would have to agree. Like I said, when you get closer to 60% that makes a huge difference since most guys in the league are around 50-52%. But in addition to winning it, he's also a good penalty killer and has better Corsi than Glendening does while being older. Plus one would wonder how Glendening would be at Ott's age (34) or if Ott was Glendening's age (27). At 27, Ott scored 19 goals, 46 points in 64 games. Ott was no doubt far better player at Glendening's age. And I see some folks here arguing that he's better even at his current age (34).

How crazy is it that the Red Wings are officially "that team" that fights and out-hits opponents but can't score or win games. Back in mid-2000s people always gave the Wings crap for being too soft yet always winning. Tables have turned. We're 10th in the league in fights lol. As a comparison we were 30th in the league in 2008. I think the last time we were top 10 in fights was 93-94 season.
-
Dude, did everyone give Zetterberg a mini ovation before his shootout!? That's crazy! I enjoyed the video, will be good memories for sure.
-
Let me tell you, since I am Ken Holland. I will kick some tires. That's how.
-
But is there a correlation to taking more faceoffs and having a lower percent? In December, Glendening and Zetterberg both had worse faceoff percents than they do now. They've both taken more faceoffs since then.
-
35 of Otts 63 PIM is from fighting. He's about the same as other players on the squad in terms of the penalties he takes. Unless I'm wrong, Id have to look it more into detail.
-
It's hard to downplay Ott's faceoff percentage. He's taken a career total 2894 faceoffs and is at about 56%. And even with less faceoffs taken, there's no signs of decline in his win %, infact there's an upwards trend. Even in his head to head matchups during the PK against top centers this season he's still got a decent faceoff % compared to others. Blashill uses Ott in the faceoffs over Glendening during the PKs. Btw Selke votes are "blah" after 5th or 6th place. It's probably someone giving a troll 5th place vote or something lol.
