Exactly, and if there is anyone on the roster who could do it, it's Z. Plus, it doesnt have to go to a 7 game series. Would be a hell of a matchup tho. And if he does shut him down even if partial, would add some good pride and energy for the fans moving forwards into playoff rounds.

Whatever happens, I kind of want the Red Wings to play either Capitals or Penguins at some point. I'm really interested to see the Malkin/Crosby vs Datsyuk/Zetterberg in 2015 (7 years later). Also I'd like to see if Zetterberg can shutdown Ovetckin. He's shutdown Toews and Crosby before, would be interesting to see what he could do against the best goal scorer.

Just by looking at Zids goal again, a lefty D man would most likely NOT have been able to score that goal from that angle.

He may be kept at a lower price to transition the youngsters in as he phases out his career. Wings have had veterans take pay cuts just to stay with organizations they think they have a shot with. Besides, you cant consider age the same way with D-men like you would with forwards.

Side note; not sure if it was just me but it looked like Zetterberg skated better than he did before he was even injured. Almost seems like he just wanted the time off. Good game by Jimmy too.

Z as winger would def put up more goals especially with a big guy like Cole on his line. Not to mention Sheahan is actually pretty good at backchecking which relieves Z from some of his duties. 2nd line could actually be pretty lethal. 3rd line could easily be one of the best in the league if Nyquist turns it up along with helms speed. Not a bad set up. I just dont think Babs would do anything like this tho..

Nice to see Holland maintains his friendships across the league. Jim Nill worked a good deal with his buddy imo.

Getting two vets may be helpful in the postseason. If you remember in playoffs last year against Boston; the young players quickly got shutdown when they got a taste of some real playoff hockey. Adding this age balance will help the core group as a whole for a deep playoff push. We def needed another veteran D-man imo.

hmm cole could be a decent producer. if hes put on powerplay expect Pav and Z to make him look better than he is. But hey , ill take that long as he puts up some numbers and uses his body to our advantage.

I'm not so sure. We have a Zetterberg. Just ask Toews and Crosby. It would be a fun matchup to watch Ovi vs. Z in playoffs.

^ This. Zetterberg and Pav have been associated with each other too much. If one goes up and the other doesn't that could cause a lot of controversy. Sad as it is, their pairing is their own demise in terms of jersey retirement XD. Who knows, lets hope for the best, these guys may not be heavily recognized around the US but Detroit's got nothing but love for em!

^But isn't the consensus that the reason Zetterberg is not as highly regarded is because the media rides on certain players moreso? This isn't the 1950s or 60s where there were not only less teams but only Montreal, Detroit or Toronto that you related hockey with. Times have changed where theres 30 teams. It's a matter of perception and a matter of reality. Zetterberg has been one of the most underrated players in the league since he came in. Datsyuk USED to be underrated for the longest time until (I wanna say around 2008/2009?) when the media realized just how slick he is and hence he started gaining more recognition. The point is; in the new NHL certain players will always be seen as "generational" while others won't even though they are deserving. I think Datsyuk in his prime was >>> Crosby. I also think Zetterbergs leadership >>>> Toews and Crosby. Except. The rest of the league doesnt because at the end of the day Z was a 7th round pick and Crosby was a 1st rounder; and ya always gotta appreciate that 1st rounder. Additionally other exampls of media bias: Who talks about Zetterberg's playoff numbers? Just FSN Detroit. Who talks about Crosby's or Toews wud be. cud be, shud be crap that they have yet to accomplish? ALL MEDIA OUTLETS! The media bias clouds our perception. I think Z and D in their prime were much better pairs than anyone out there. Including Malkin and Crosby. Z and D were/are complete players. Not many can say that about other pairs.

It's not the same comparison because goalies are a much smaller pool than forwards in the league. It's much easier for an elite goalie to win a Vezina MULTIPLE times (Hasek won it what? 6 times?) than it is for countless forwards to compete for the Hart.

I dont see how the bar is set too high when both Pav and Z already surpassed Lindsays numbers and will most likely surpass Federovs numbers. They will probably end up behind Howie, Yzerman, Delveccio and Lidstrom.
