He should, but he probly won't. Despite Howard's struggles and demotion, Holland still wants him around. He has said he's happy to have him as "A solid second option in goal" before. But, that could have just been trying to save face after just tying up close to $10 million in goaltending having to give Mrazek a raise and Howard not getting a sniff from other teams. Having Coreau ready to step in as Mrazek's backup at a very cheap cap hit and not having room for him is bad as well. Trying to send him to LA for basically nothing would work for the Kings as Howard's cap hit would be covered by relief from Quick's hit if he's on LTIR, but then what to do if he stinks it up or when Quick comes back? Where would they put him? Unless he regains his old form, good luck trading him or getting someone to bite on waivers. Howard is high risk and every GM knows it. Big cap hit, very inconsistent, prone to bad goals and meltdowns. I think they'd look elsewhere first.
-
So they send him down week ago, then bring him back up for a couple days to send him back down? What would be the point of this "cap move", if not for giving a player a last look? Maybe you guys can explain it better than just saying it's a "cap move"?
-
What you posted kind of made sense. Lol I found an article that explained it. He was waived and sent to GR, then with Street getting injured and sent down, they brought him back up for one more look in camp. Apparently they liked what they saw from him. Good stuff. He was sent back to GR earlier today. Figured there was an explanation for it. No team carries three goalies.

Looks good!

Pulks was never going to amount to much on the Wings. He dominated the AHL, but once he hit the faster NHL game with much better two way forwards, D, and goaltenders..that was it. He's one dimensional. All he has is a hard shot, and he's not quick enough at getting it off before the opposition D is all over him, or within the split-second opening he has before the opposing goaltender gets into position to block the shot. It will be the same in Minnesota. I do agree losing him for nothing sucks, but no team was willing to even give a low pick for him even if they were low in the order and probably figured they'd chance waivers. Whoever got him got him. That says something. He's not worth any assets at this point, teams would only take him for free.

Official 2016 Detroit Red Wings Offseason Thread

Was just reading up on the rules for the Vegas expansion draft. The summer after their first season they are guaranteed no lower than the 6th overall pick in Round 1, and will pick third in every round after that. What if the team they assemble somehow gels and makes the playoffs? Unlikely, I know. But what if? Should they still get those picks? I think if they make the playoffs, they should pick according to where they get knocked out. If not, then they get the picks. -

Wow, that really sucks. Didn't realize this. Damn Holland, you just HAD to give Jimmy an NTC, didn't you? Was there ever anything to that rumour Carolina wanted to start to move away from Cam Ward and were interested in Howard? Haven't been keeping up on things over the summer. How would waivers work with Jimmy? I've read multiple times that he can't be waived because of the NTC, but what if he's not cutting it and they want Coreau up? They must be able to waive him and send him to GR, no? Waiver rules have always confused me. haha -

If you don't think E can be moved, then why do you think Howard can be? Even for two years, that's a combined $10+ million for a HUGE question mark at the position you don't want questions at, especially bringing it in voluntarily. Then again, maybe he'll be able to turn his problems around this season with the time and the low pressure having a backup role allows, and teams will come calling. I think the likely scenario is he gets claimed in the expansion draft if anything though. -

9/30 Exhibition GDT : Boston Bruins at Red Wings, 7:00 EST
chaps80 replied to Hockeytown0001's topic in General
Yeah, but it doesn't matter really. Well, it does since he'll be starting games here and there, but he's not being counted on as the #1 anymore. And if he really sucks, there's always Coreau. Can't wait to see him play some regular season games in the NHL. Guy is huge, almost as tall as Ben Bishop, and has really gotten good and improved his skills these past couple seasons. Hopefully he'll get a shot at full time backup in Detroit once Howard moves on, instead of the tradition of signing some veteran journeyman backup and keeping him around for a season or two too long. -
To be fair, He did earn that first $6.25 million two year deal the Avs signed him too. Once Holland traded a first for him, the way he had played in LA and Colorado, and with the way the D was in Detroit, he was resigned for a bit more than his previous contract. His final Wings contract was steep, but he wanted more money, and Holland really had no choice with the D still under par and not being able to sign any free agents. Quincey walking would have left a hole, sad as that is. I figured he wasn't going to be resigned this season, and i'm glad to see he won't be. The kids are ready to step in, and Quincey isn't worth $4.5 million a season. That was proven when he finally got signed during training camps for $3 million less. Holland knew when to let go this time.
-
They've had two actually. Don't forget the goalie they drafted first overall in '00, then traded away Luongo in order to make him the #1 then signed him for 15 years of which he only played parts of 7 due to about 20 different injuries, one of which happened in the damn All Star Game. Rick "Rickety" DiPietro.

Yeah red velvet cake is the s***.
-
Because just when you think we've seen the last of Cleary in a player role of ANY kind, this pops up. Guy won't go away, and Holland is enabling him, and it makes me think there's a small chance he might get the great idea to sign him to contract again. Other GMs would have cut ties years ago.How many other teams keep old vets who can't play in the NHL anymore around this long in a player role? Give him something to do off the ice if you want him around so badly. Apparently the league has softened the minimum veteran player requirement due to the amount of players playing in the World Cup anyways, so him being around for preseason games isn't needed.
-
No, but it still doesn't make sense. But I guess it's not Holland's money. He showed how fast he could burn through cap this offseason.

signed Darren Helm re-signed: 5 years, $3.85m AAV
chaps80 replied to HockeytownRules19's topic in General
Helm would have got that money elsewhere anyways. Maybe not the term/NTC, but I remember hearing quite a few teams wanted him, and maybe that term/NTC was the difference between him staying or leaving. Not often I defend Holland, but he did what he had to do to keep him, even if he was given a bit too much. -
The snack cake?
-
Holland loves hanging onto the past. I fully expect him to be signed.
-
Exactly what i thought. No need to play in a pretty much pointless tournament now when you are already going to miss games during the NHL season. Save what you do have in the tank. Maybe if Z and Kronwall weren't counted on for so much when they shouldn't be at this point in their careers, they may have considered it in a limited role.

Oh man. Holland just can't let him go, can he? If this is true, i bet he gets signed. No cap, but hey, it's Cleary. -
That "Yzerman" artwork is a joke. Come on Jimmy, get that s*** fixed before you wear it on the ice in warmups.

Chris Osgood joins Jimmy Devellano as Saginaw Spirit part owners

The Sudbury Wolves were recently sold as well to a local real estate magnate. Finally going to get the new arena. I think we have the oldest barn in the OHL. Built in 1950. Hopefully he dumps more into player scouting and development as well, because the Wolves have sucked since their cinderella trip to the finals in 2008. -
Or a Ford truck. No matter how much money you throw at it, it keeps falling apart at the worst times.

Nice mask. Great tribute while not being flashy or over the top. Humble. Like Mrazek himself.
