I kinda see your point, but any savings are good in the cap era, and Howard is just too inconsistent to make that much money. I'd be happy if they saved $2 million and signed someone like Raanta than I would if they kept Howard.

It's crazy that Mrazek even practiced with the team before the Florida game if he was feeling that horrible. Dudes hardcore.

Exactly. There has to be an experienced NHL backup behind Mrazek at this point. If they want to give Coreau a look next season and see what happens that's great, but they need to have a legit backup on the team in case he doesn't work out. I don't see Holland not signing somebody.

Keeping Howard on as backup would be fine if he didn't make so much money, but with Mrazek being RFA I see him getting a huge raise. I know offer sheets don't happen very often, but there is a chance that a team with cap to burn could give him a crazy offer that Holland would have to match, and you can't have $10 million+ tied up in goaltending with things being tight already. Holland will have to find a way to move Howard without retaining too much salary even if he doesn't get much or anything in return. Trade him, waive him, buy him out if that's even possible. Then sign one of the 20 or so UFA backups for cheap. I don't really see a way around it.

There's no doubt they can hang with the top teams. It's consistently playing to the best of their abilities that they have a problem with. When they win a game like this, you'd think they'd get a confidence boost and keep playing that way instead of slacking off.

Doubtful. Mrazek will be back in the nets when he's good to go. Howard is doing what a good backup needs to, and might just get some teams interested in trading for him in the summer.

What did you expect from a 35 year old vet making $3 million? 90+ points like he had 6 years ago? He's been fine for what he signed for. He's got the same amount of points as Helm, who will probably get some huge extension while Richards will be gone. No one expected him to stick around past this season. He's scored some clutch goals, is a veteran presence who has won two cups, and i think if the Wings make the playoffs he'll good to have around.
