Grade The Offseason 2019: Yzerman's Opening Moves

I think you're losing sight on what the motivation of the trade was. For the Leafs, It was dumping cap. The price for doing that was giving away their first, not obtaining a throw in 6th. I'd much rather send that 1st to Carolina than Detroit in Dubas's shoes. The throw in pick is an after thought formality. Rivalry aside. You don't as a general rule wanna strengthen your divisional adversaries. Giving a 1st round pick to a divisional adversary in exchange for cap space. In fact I think it would have been much smarter for Dubas to send his 1st West, but maybe he didn't have a dance partner IDK.

Wings acquire Adam Erne from Tampa

We got Erne for a 4th. Erne was drafted in the 2nd and has shown potential in the NHL... so basically a young 3rd liner for a draft pick that has like a 10% chance of ever becoming an NHL player. No reason to be disgruntled about this deal. A 2nd round player for a 4th round pick... who Yzerman demonstrably wants. Good deal. I like. If Svechnikov can't make the team cause Erne is there then Svech can eat s*** and die for all I care.

As much as I love shoes made by Chinese and Vietnamese slave children, I'm a New Balance guy. Made in America baby. Crazy how you can still make goods in the U.S. if you're not taking 95% margins....

I mean your asking TORONTO to gift DETROIT on the Marleau deal. I don't expect divisional adversaries to make those kind of deals. Especially between long standing rivals like TOR and DET. Drafts are dice rolls. It's take a half decade before we can have any sort of meaningful discussion about it. But I like our biggest reach in Seider... which is a pretty uplifting thought when you think about it.

Just looking at the organization under Yzerman now... We have 3 scouting directors Pro: Mark Howe Amateur: Kris Draper Euro: Hakan Andersson Andersson is a legendary euro scout and will hopefully be with the team for many more years, though I would like to see one of his draft picks turn into a new Zberg or Datsyuk soon. Draper is the new guy replacing Tyler Wright, who I think did an okay/so-so job. Hopefully Draper is a small improvement. Howe has been a pro scout with the team since like 96/97 and is going on 65 years of age now. The thing we've been bad at for the last 10 years is assessing not only our own pros, but other pros on the market. Could Howe be the problem child in this group? At 65 he's probably nearing retirement anyway... Underneath Howe is Chris Yzerman. I get the feeling that Chris is probably in line for Howe's job. The only other guy who I think could be Howe's replacement is Maltby, similar to Draper in a way.

Playing one season of fantasy hockey with my s*** hole friends made me realize this. Trades almost never happen because everyone is talking smack and no one wants to help each other.

Thought the same thing I also liked this one they did a few years ago, I don't think they ever wore it on the ice though:

Updates on the Wings staff changes (via the official website): LJ Scarpace has been added as the new video coach. Don't know much about him other than he's a Michigan native and was video coach for the Canes for the last two seasons, but I assume this means Adam Nightingale has been promoted from video coach to a full assistant coach. Kris Draper has indeed been promoted to director of amateur scouting Ryan Rexmierski has been poached from Nashville. Will serve as chief amateur scout under Draper. Former Wing Jesse Wallin has been poached from STL, and will be our 2nd chief amateur scout under Draper. Some other names I don't recognize on the scouting staff (not sure if new or I just don't remember them): Kyle Mackinnon (pro scout), Rob Rassey (amateur scout), Bryce Thoma (amateur scout), Kevin Gibson (amateur scout), Phil Osaer (goalie scout), Thomas Carlsson (Euro scout)

Kip is like the smartest guy on here, and he served in the military so i love him. But then he votes democrat and works for the feds in DC so I hate him. KRS knows more about prospects than anyone on here, and likes a lot of my posts, so I love him. But then he votes for Trudeau and is Canadian so I hate him. Both of them need to get their s*** together IMO

    Reddit red wings thread

r/detroitredwings is great for breaking news and fun facts, but reddit conversations are so surface level and lacking depth. Comments like "Yzerman is lit fam, rise to the top" and real discussion goes unnoticed. It's also completely lacking in any sense of comradery or community. On LGW I know who has something between their ears and who's full of s***. I know who favors rebuilding and who favors going for the cup. I know who follows prospects and knows there stuff and who doesn't. Reddit is full of randos and you have no idea who you're talking to on a daily basis. Call it clicky and highschoolish, but I'd say the true hardcores are still at LGW. Only the fairweathers make their way to reddit. Reddit is a dying site anyway... you're about 4 or 5 years late to the party there Jiim. I give it 3 more years before most users have moved on to the next thing. Reddit lost a lot of its luster in the past 2 years as they've tried to go corporate mainstream. Same thing happened to Dig before them. If you like LGW and want something more involved for the time being, go to HF boards. Reddit is s***.

Weird compliment. But I'll take it. Not sure I get why we needed Erne, but it was very low cost, so I'm absolutely fine with it.

Same reason I gave up watching the Pistons and Lions, but stuck with the Wings. I love player loyalty for better and worse. I don't wanna just win, I wanna win with drafted and trained Wings boys for the most part.

Pretty much. I don't disagree. My hopes would be entirely built on ALL the young guns emerging as stars. Could happen, but probably won't. I'm holding on to that could thou... Steven is certainly counting us out. Would love to surprise him, but he's probably smarter than me.

2019 Offseason Rebuild Thread, Pt. 2 - What's the Yzerplan?

I'm listening to an interview with Abby right now. He's been training with Brian Lashoff and Dominik Shine in the offseason. Is this a problem? I would think it's extremely advantageous to make friends with and train with the best players in the world. I'm sure Larkin has been training with his good friend Werenski, but meanwhile Abby is training with AHLers. Is it any wonder he plays like an AHLer? IDK just a thought...

2019 Offseason Rebuild Thread, Pt. 2 - What's the Yzerplan?

I think we have 2 more years of rebuilding ahead of us, but I also lowkey think this is the first time in a while I might consider us a dark horse team. Picture this... The BLM line is legit and the chemistry continues. Larkin is named captain and emerges as player who is scoring upwards of 80 or 90 pts and flirting with 40 goals. Bertuzzi is the gritty hard worker on his left who emerges as a 60 pt 30 goal role player. Mantha is the hulking sniper on his right who flourishes with Larkin as his centerman and captain, also reaching 30 goals and flirting with 70 pts. A very balanced and productive line. The rest of the league is forced to play their best defensive players against the Black Lives Matter line, which opens up scoring for the emerging 2nd line young guns.... Behind the top line Blashill does a good job juggling Filppula and Nielsen between centering the 2nd and 3rd line. One or two of AA, Svechnikov, Rasmussen, Zadina become fixtures on the 2nd line providing depth scoring. Despite being overpaid the vet bottom liners of Abby, Helmer, Glendog, provide the leadership and grit needed to support the kids. On defense, Hronek emerges as a star Dman. He plays mostly with the top 6 forwards and amasses 50 pts. Nemeth is paired with Hronek and quickly becomes the Methot to Hronek's Karlsson. He covers defensive lapses allowing Hronek to "roam" and diligently provides puck retrieval, a crucial but underrated role. The aging Green fits nicely into his new role as the 2nd pair playmaker. The rest of the D is serviceable but unremarkable. After expected injuries to Howard and poor play by Bernier, Larsson is given a shot at the net. He instantly Mrazek's the role and emerges as one of our youngest and brightest stars. The Red Wings, still a Holland designed team but under the guidance of Yzerman, quietly dark horse their way into league relevancy by January. I don't think it's that unreasonable that it could happen provided the young (and most important) players stay healthy, which is usually true of younger players anyway. I don't think it would even require that Cholowski or Zadina emerge as stars, but it would definitely help. Bertuzzi - Larkin - Mantha Athanasiou - Filppula - Zadina/Svech/Ras xxxxxxxx - Nielsen - xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx - xxxxxxxx - xxxxxxxx Nemeth - Hronek xxxxxxxx - Green xxxxxxxx - xxxxxxxx Howard Larsson We don't win anything, but the team looks like it's rounded a corner. And we still have Cholo, Seider, possibly Svech/Ras/Z lying in wait. Yzerman admits he rejoined a team which he recognized was on the verge of turning a corner.

He's like like 40 pt in 50 gp in Europe type player. That usually translates to like a 30 pt player in NA.

    2020 Draft Thread

Unfortunately the only players we have to sell this year who have any real value are Green and Howard. And I don't think the organization is going to sell either. Both wanna be here so I think we will be inclined to let them do that. I think we have an extremely boring mediocre year ahead of us. No selling and no buying. Just waiting.

Whatever happened with him? Just doesn't wanna be in NA? I thought it was injuries but he's been playing in Sweden and performing really well.
