Andreas Athanasiou Officially Signed 2 yrs. $3M AAV
ChristopherReevesLegs replied to SwedeLundin77's topic in General
I don't disagree, but I'm not so worried about the Babcockian defense theory, I'm more worried that AA is one-dimensional. I like speed, I like breakaways, but successful breakaway attempts for AA account for less than 0.01% of his shifts on the ice. He needs to provide something else away from the puck and with the puck to warrant more ice time. He needs to greatly improve his playmaking and scoring ability in the cycle (this is where Nyquist has him beat). He needs to forecheck hard and win offensive zone turnovers. He needs to backcheck hard and win defensive zone turnovers. I'm confident he can learn to forecheck/backcheck hard if he tries, I'm not as confident about the playmaking ability. If he decides to commit to D in the offensive/neutral/defensive zone, then great, we have the Darren Helm we always wanted. A speedy 3rd line center/winger who can shut down opponents and make you pay for over-committing in the O-zone via the breakaway. I'd be thrilled with that, but obviously I'd like him to do better than Helm+ -

I dont think AA has passed Nyquist on the depth chart yet. Although that could change in the first week if AA brings it I think. Whos better? Idk theyre both better at different things. I think Nyquist is more the style of player the Red Wings like in their system thou. Regardless, i think AA v Goose is the real s***ty comparison being made here. Not sure what ur on about, I haven't used AA "not being elite" against him. -

He's not. 16 goals and 33 pts isn't elite. Is anyone saying he is?? Nyquist isn't the future of this team, and neither is AA at the moment. His poke check is fantastic. I wouldn't say he can pick pocket with the best in the league, but maybe if he works on it? IDK, I'm optimistic. The problem with AA is it's always been flashes in the pan with him so far. All of the sudden he works his butt off and makes a brilliant steal, but then he's no where to be seen on D for multiple games. When he tries he succeeds. -

John Torchetti? That's a shame to hear. It's a little odd Green didn't want to leave for a contender. Maybe he's comfortable? Too comfortable? Howard looks like he's put on weight. Not the greatest sign in the world. -

What an embarrassment this team is at the moment. When I started on this board the Red Wings had the repuation of not only being annoyingly good year after year, but also being the best organization in sports. No drama, efficient drafting, highly respected players, the list goes and goes, i dont need to remind everyone of that. We could look down our noses at everyone and life was good on top, even through a down year. The hope is gone. After the Montreal game Zberg, the last bastion of Red Wings elitism and power, said this current team has embarrassed everyone who's ever worn the winged wheel. Its true. Watching this team is like when you're running late for work and dont eat breakfast. The coffee tears youre empty stomach up all morning, but you remember you packed a delicious sandwhich for lunch. Fresh thin sliced rare roast beef. The fancy cheese you cant afford. The brioche roll. Hot damn you love to think about. Then lunch hour roles around and you find out your wife is having an affair. The snobby pride is gone, were getting screwed left n right. So now that that's said, naturally i wanna funnel all my frustations onto our goaltenders. Mrazek is finished here. He's sitting on a 3.62 GAA and .891 sv%. No goalie, even with bad D, survives these numbers. Its a repeat from last year and hes in a contract year. Im saying it now: Mrazek will be playing in Czech Republic next year. No team wanted him during the expansion. No team will want him next year. How long do we lie to ourselves like with Brendan Smith and say hes gonna turn it around? Hes less than Smith was at 25 already. Its over. How can anyone prefer him to Howard? Flame on.

The NHL salary cap has finally caught up to the Red Wings pre-cap salary levels. Red Wings had about $78 million in salary in 2003-4. This year, the cap goes over $75M to $79.5M. As an additional tidbit, adjusted for inflation, an NHL team's cap today would need to be about $106 mil to equal the spending of the 2003 Red Wings team. The wings still reign as the highest payroll team of all time.
